Property Information
Cape Breton Island, world renowned for the breathtaking beauty of its windswept coastline, is home to the Cabot Trail and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, both of which offer glorious vistas, whale-watching and nature trails. In the winter, there is skiing just minutes away near Sydney. Port Morien is a quaint fishing village located along the northeast coast of Cape Breton Island, near the towns of Glace Bay and Sydney. Nearby is the Fortress of Louisbourg - the largest reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town in North America. The cottage on Breakwater Street overlooks the harbor, alive with the comings and goings of colorful fishing boats.
The story behind this cottage is rather unusual and interesting. My mother, world-traveler and author of two books, built a log cabin in Homeville, Nova Scotia near her family, in the late 1980's. Whenever she went shopping in Glace Bay or Sydney, she drove past Port Morien. One day she noticed a "For Sale" sign next to a small old saltbox cottage perched on an embankment overlooking the wharf. She couldn't believe her ears when they told her that the cottage and lot would cost $5,000.00! Upon investigation, she found that the cottage had been built in the late 1800's, before the time of the concrete 'frost walls' that are now routinely used to preserve the foundations of buildings. And because of zoning law changes since then, she wouldn't be allowed to take the building down and build another cottage. But she realized that the view alone was worth the price, so she took a chance. She bought the cottage, hired a house-mover to jack it up, put in a new foundation, complete with frost walls, lowered it back down and renovated the entire cottage (while preserving much of it's personality), adding decks, a picture window, a bedroom in the attic, as well as all new plumbing and appliances.Viola! What you see are the fruits of her creative labors.
Whether you are searching for peace and quiet or fun activities, you will find this area rich in natural and human history. The people are gentle and friendly, and when you leave you will feel refreshed.
