The Puffin’s Perch was conceived, designed, constructed, furnished and provisioned to host large family beach gatherings in style and comfort. We hope that you enjoy your stay.
The Puffin’s Perch takes its name from the nesting habitat and characteristics of the tufted puffin that is native to the Oregon coast and the Pacific Rim.
Tufted puffins inhabit the entire Northern Pacific Rim from Japan to the Aleutians, Alaska, the Coast of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and all the way to Southern California. They spend the first three years of life and their winters far out at sea.
During the spring, summer and fall, puffins nest and breed in burrows on grassy headlands and vertical sea cliffs high above the ocean. They choose the windward and seaward side of coastal cliffs so that they can launch from these high slopes using the wind and altitude to gain speed for flight.
Puffins tend to form lifelong monogamous pairs and nest in extended family colonies. They lay a single egg which both parents take turns incubating as they subsequently do in nurturing their chick.
In Oregon, large puffin colonies are found near Cannon Beach at Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park, on the seaward side of Yaquina Head near Newport and at Three Arch Rock near Bandon. Puffins can be observed at the Oregon Coast Aquarium at Newport.
