Property Information
In 1789, the housewright framing up the Federal style house on the road to the ferry recorded for posterity the Presidential tour passing by on its way through New England: "Mr. Washington is here," he wrote on the roof rafter he had just put in place.
Since then, like most old New England houses, Arrowhead Farmhouse has grown and undergone many changes. In the 1860s, my great-grandfather borrowed 20 yoke of oxen from his neighbors and moved the house half a mile so his new bride could be closer to her family, and added a kitchen and a handsome new barn. In 1897, the house and barn were moved across the road to their present site, and the family added a new porch and veranda to take advantage of the cool breezes off the Merrimack River. In the 1920s, my grandfather added electricity and the first bathroom, and laid out a Colonial Revival style garden for his daughters.
Today, the house is a pleasant mélange of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It has a big country kitchen, a dining room, a parlor, a living room, three large bedrooms with double beds, 2 ½ baths, a laundry, a "back room," a woodshed, and assorted porches, lawns and garden. (It also has a barn, but there’s no access to it pending renovation.)
We have, of course added the comforts of modern appliances, but we’ve kept what we like best from the past, too – fireplaces with Federal mantelpieces, the woodstove that takes the chill out of a fall morning in a cheery way, simple furniture made at the home or nearby, more sophisticated pieces brought back by seafaring family members or brought from merchants in the port, quilts stitched by the women of the family. It hasn’t been restored; it’s been preserved.
Arrowhead Farmhouse is a part of one of the oldest family farms in the United States. In 1983, when it celebrated its 300th anniversary in our family, its history was documented in an award-winning book, Arrowhead Farm: 300 Years of New England Husbandry and Cooking.

Dear Visitor,
My family has enjoyed living in Arrowhead Farmhouse for more than 200 years. Now, although I still enjoy it, I live and work in Boston, so I like to share Arrowhead with others who will enjoy it.
If you're looking for Jacuzzis, a formica kitchen, and a high-tech entertainment center, Arrowhead Farmhouse is not for you. But if you'd like to experience living in a real New England farmhouse and using the heirlooms a New England farm family has used and cherished over the generations, you will enjoy it. I've left most of my favorite things out for you to use and enjoy. All I ask is that you treat them as carefully as you would if they were yours. Children who are respectful of old things are also definitely welcome.
The house is equipped with modern conveniences and everything you should need for a comfortable stay, including linens. It's ready for your arrival at 3 PM on Saturday, and departure time is 10 AM on Saturday. Arrowhead Farmhouse is a smoke-free environment, and no pets are allowed.
For Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks, special rates apply, and arrival and departure times can be negotiated.
The first payment of 50% is due when you sign the lease, and the final 50% is due 45 days before arrival. There is a security deposit due with the final payment. The security deposit is to cover loss or breakage, damage to the property, and long distance telephone charges. It will be returned, with any of these charges itemized and deducted, within 60 days of your departure.

Arrowhead Farmhouse is special at many times of year.
In May and June, the dogwoods and lilacs are out, and the crowds of tourists are not; farm plant sales are underway, and birdwatching is good.
In July and August, there are harbor and river cruises, deep-sea fishing and whale watching, the annual "Yankee Home-coming" festival and myriad other recreational activities in Newburyport.
In September, the countryside and the beaches nearby are uncrowded, warm and mellow. In October, the spectacular autumn foliage is at its peak.

And in the winter, shops and museums are open and
unhurried, there's cross-country skiing in the park
and the house is a cozy retreat.
You can enjoy your New England visit without going far from Arrowhead Farmhouse. Things you might enjoy doing right around "home", depending on the season of the year, include:
Outdoors:
A lazy summer afternoon in the Gloucester hammock on the piazza or sunbathing on the chaise.
Bird watching, or a walk at dusk to look for the deer in their favorite spot by the fence line.
Hiking the Merrimack River National Trail.
A picnic at an outdoor concert or play in Maudslay Park.
Nature walks or cross country skiing in the park.
Indoors:
Breakfast on the veranda or, on cool mornings, on the sun porch.
Exploring the bookshelves for books on horticulture, wild flora and fauna, local and New England history and folklore, or a novel.
Trying out an old New England recipe form the Arrowhead Farm cookbook.
A cozy evening in front of the fire, playing Chinese checkers or (if you can't break the habit) watching TV.

Forty miles north of Boston and Logan International Airport, Newburyport is ideally located for a New England visit. It's five minutes form interstate 495, and close to picturesque Route 1A, which hugs the New England coastline.
To the South:
Ipswich, with enough 17th century houses to have a 17th century house tour each summer, is 20 minutes away. Here the former Crane Estate is now a recreational preserve with Crane's Beach, one of New England's loveliest beaches and picnic areas and outdoor concerts on the grounds of the historic mansion on Castle Hill.
Cape Ann, with whale-watching expeditions and the historic fishing and art colonies of Gloucester, Essex and Rockport, is only 40 minutes away.
Salem, home of the world famous museum of New England's China Trade, the Peabody-Essex Museum, and the sites of the Salem witchcraft trials, is also 40 minutes away.
And it's less than an hour to Boston by car, by the frequent buses that stop about a mile from the house, or by train on the historic route through the Great Marsh.
To the North:
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, another charming old seaport with the extensive historic museum village of Strawbery Banke, is 20 minutes away.
The Maine coastline communities- York Beach, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, and Portland - are just beyond.
Inland:
The Lowell National Historic Park, commemorating the birthplace of American Industrial Revolution, just up the river.
Historic Sturbridge Village, the Maine skiing areas, and the New Hampshire's White Mountains and Lakes Region are convenient day trips. The Berkshires, home of Tanglewood and the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, are within easy reach.
And for the born to shop:
The discount malls at Kittery and Freeport, home of L.L. Bean's; Kittery, North Conway and New Bedford, are also easy day trips.
