Tarpum Bay House Rental Overview

Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera Island, Bahamas
3 Bedrooms   Sleeps 6

Vacation Rental Description

Point O' Vue is located on Winding Bay on the Atlantic side of Eleuthera. The view from the house is spectacular! A boardwalk takes you to the beach for sunning, swimming, kayaking, or walking for miles, enjoying the sand, sea and warm Bahamas breeze. There is plenty to do and see in laid-back Eleuthera. There are miles of unspoiled, virtually deserted beaches, including the world-famous Lighthouse Beach; caves; reefs; small settlements and historic sites to explore; fishing, boating...or you can just relax!

Point O' Vue is a wonderful place for all ages - with accomodations for 6 in three bedrooms. The beach is ideal, with lots of sand for castle-building and warm, crystal clear water, with sandy, shallow entry for swimming. Each bedroom includes a private bath, with a large bathroom off of the master bedroom on the lower level. Large entertainment system for you to enjoy including 44" HDTV, videos, games and CDs to use. Housekeeping service included. Kitchen with dishwasher/disposal, oven, microwave, and all the usual items. Large open living area with plenty of light and gorgeous views. Porches at the front and rear of the house to use for sunning or dining al fresco. Beach has open cabana and 2 kayaks for your enjoyment. We open our doors to you for a slice of our paradise!

Tarpum Bay is the closest settlement to Winding Bay and is a good source of fresh fish when the fishermen return to the public pier each afternoon. Or you can try your hand at fishing yourself - either in Winding Bay or with one of the locals who offers charters.

North Eleuthera (ELH) (1 hour 40 min.) - US Airways, Continental, BahamasAir, Twin Air

b) Rock Sound airport from Ft. Lauderdale Jet Port on Twin Air
c) Governors Harbour airport from Ft. Lauderdale Jet Port on Twin Air

There are also fast ferries from Nassau to Eleuthera on Fridays and Sundays, if a boat trip appeals. There are many options; we will be happy to assist you with travel planning.

Will I need to rent a car?

Yes, a car is needed for shopping and exploring. There are no major car rental agencies on the island. We arrange all of our car rentals through Wilfred Major (242-334-2158), who is a close friend of ours. He will meet you at the aiport and take you to Point o' Vue. Rental cars on Eleuthera are often older models than those found at major agencies in the US, but Wilfred's cars are well-maintained and reliable. Boat rentals are also available - ask for more info.

Who are Mary and Columbus?

Mary Johnson is our fine housekeeper/cook, who will be at the house daily for 4 hours to launder, clean up and bring in fresh flowers. Columbus is our property manager who can help with any questions about the house. He lives offsite. Both people are great sources of local knowledge.

What about food shopping?

There is “The Market” shopping center in Rock Sound that has a grocery, liquor store and hardware store. The grocery store in Rock Sound is very well stocked with all the basics. Meat and chicken are usually only available frozen – some guests do bring some from home. “Burt’s for the Best” in Tarpum Bay is the grocery store in Tarpum Bay. You can purchase conch, and fresh fish at the pier in Tarpum Bay directly from the fishermen or Mary can pick up fresh fish for you. Further afield, there is a grocery store in Governors Harbor, though we’ve found that the one in Rock Sound has a slightly better selection. Be aware that food prices in the Bahamas are usually somewhat higher than in the US, with the odd surprising exception (Irish butter or cheese anyone?).

What activities are available?

Snorkeling and diving (please bring your own gear), boating, fishing, kayaking, exploring the villages, finding your own private beaches, having a drink or meal at a local bar or restaurant are all great fun.

The privacy of the location makes it ideal for family togetherness, a couple’s getaway or a small business retreat. On many days you’ll stay right on Winding Bay and enjoy walking (it’s 2 miles around), relaxing on the 250 ft. of private beach at Point o’ Vue, and gazing at the night sky on the sundeck.

On the occasional rainy day you can watch the videos and DVD’s we have there (you may want to bring some of your own), enjoy board games or satellite TV and radio. There is a fine sound system for your favorite CD’s.

How is the weather?
Point o’ Vue is on the same latitude and 250 miles east of Key West, therefore, the weather is very similar. Winters find temperatures from 65 to 80 with an occasional nor’easter. Spring and Fall are predictable and gorgeous with an occasional squall. Summers are warm and July and August are great weather months with warm water and cooler temperatures following late afternoon showers, but you’ll be glad for the air conditioners in the bedrooms!

What about phone, email and fax?

There are phones at the house. Before going find out from your long distance carrier how to make calls from the Bahamas. The fax is on the main phone number. We can send set-up instructions for access to the Internet.

Other Unlisted Amenities

Point O' Vue is a 3,100 s.f. private home designed by the acclaimed Nassau architect, Michael Alexiou to the owners' personal specifications. The views of Winding Bay are spectacular from the front verandah, which runs the length of the house and offers a wonderful location for meals al fresco around the large teak dining table or simply relaxing and enjoying the breeze in one of the comfy lounge chairs. (Note: Click on photos to enlarge)

The main living area of the house is open-plan, with 25' cathedral ceilings and sliding glass doors to both the front and back verandah. The living room has plenty of seating, and an entertainment center with satellite TV, VCR and CD player, games and CDs. The well-equipped kitchen offers all the amenities. A small study with phone and fax, a three-piece bathroom with shower, and a laundry room with washer and dryer are also located on the ground floor.

The master bedroom, with king-sized bed is located on the ground floor, with sliding doors to the front verandah. Two large bedrooms, each with two twin beds, are located on the second floor. Each bedroom has a private 4-piece bathroom and dressing/storage area, and outside access to verandah or deck. The bedrooms are equipped with both ceiling fans and air conditioners, and all bedding and towels are provided.

Step out the door and there is plenty to explore! If you're not feeling very energetic and only get half-way down the boardwalk to the beach, you can enjoy wonderful views of Winding Bay from the comfort of the hammock under the palm trees. A great spot to read a book and while away the hours. A few steps away, the beach offers miles of sand, two kayaks to explore the crystal clear bay, and a cabana with table for beach-side meals or drinks.

Winding Bay is a 2 mile wide bay, sheltered from the Atlantic by barrier reefs. There are only 7 houses on the bay, along with the Club Venta resort, which has been closed for several years, though is still maintained. The beach is extremely private - you'll often be the only one on it as far as you can see! It's also possible to walk along the shore for several miles to the south, where you can explore totally uninhabited beaches and numerous tidepools.

The reefs that provide shelter from the Atlantic for Winding Bay are some of the most beautiful on the island. Home to a wide variety of colorful fish, shellfish and sea turtles, they'll provide many hours of enjoyment if you like to snorkel or scuba dive. The reefs are best reached by kayak or boat - see the FAQ for information on boat rentals. Some guests have also enjoyed fishing for their suppers, and in many cases have been quite successful.

One of Point O' Vue's treasures is housekeeper Mary Johnson. She will be available to you for four hours per day. She can shop, cook and clean as you request. She's also a wonderful source of information about Eleuthera...and will even help you wrestle conch out of the shell and then teach you to make delicious conch fritters if you like the DIY approach! Her beautiful fresh flower arrangements will be found throughout the house during your stay.

Property Activities

On both the Atlantic and Carribean lie countless unspoiled, natural beaches that are waiting to be discovered. Take a long walk at low tide, relax in the sun, or partake in shelling and snorkeling on shallow reefs off shore. Don't miss the spectactular Lighthouse Beach at low tide or Ten Bay Beach at sunset.

Lighthouse Beach is included on some "ten best beaches in the world" lists and it is well worth the effort required to get there. The last few miles to the beach are on an unpaved dirt road and while a four-wheel drive vehicle would no doubt make the trip easier, it can be done (with care) in a car or van. Chances are, once you get there, as with so many of the beaches on Eleuthera, you'll have this breathtaking beach entirely to yourself!

Goulding's Cay, just north of Gregory Town is an enchantingly lovely beach with a small offshore island on the Carribean side of the island, perfect for days when it's windy on the Atlantic side.

Surfer's Beach on the Atlantic side of the island, two miles south of Gregory Town is a stretch of powdery white sand offering the best surfing in the Bahamas. The (former) Club Med beach is a stunningly beautiful stretch of sand, close to Governor's Harbor.

Take a drive down Queen’s Highway and explore! Stretching 110 miles long and 3 miles wide, Eleuthera's 15 settlements are rich with character, color and history. Close to Point o’ Vue are Tarpum Bay, once a pineapple exporting community; Rock Sound, which has the “Ocean Hole”, an inland saltwater lake popular with divers; and Governor’s Harbor, the capital of Eleuthera.

If you're curious about the subterranean regions of the island, "The Cave", a mile-long underground cavern near Hatchet Bay, has stalactites and stalagmites and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Preacher's Cave at the north end of the island served as shelter in 1648 for the shipwrecked first settlers of the island. Off the north end of Eleuthera, Harbour Island is suitable as a long day trip or an overnight trip. Dunmore Town, on Harbor Island, is the oldest settlement in the Bahamas.
