Property Information
Roman stars of stage and screen highly favor this area, 45 minutes southeast of the Eternal City. With lush vegetation and calming views of distant mountains, it's no wonder. Two interesting ancient towns, both within minutes by car, lie in either direction, and a convenient commuter rail line to Rome is a mile away. Above all, the area is quiet, a bit seclusive and quite pretty.
Villa Adonis sits astride a large amount of outdoor space and is composed of the main villa for six and a cottage for three, 90 feet away. Well maintained lawns are ringed by gardens, shrubs, and trees: shade trees, palm trees, fig, apple, peach, apricot and cherry trees. Forgive me if I've missed any. The pool features its own clubhouse equipped with a shower and changing room.
The friendly owner, no stranger to the arts, designs costumes for Italy's theater set. When not traveling for work, as he often does, he resides in a separate cottage 20 feet away and may share the pool and gardens.
The front of Villa Adonis opens onto a large partly covered, furnished patio equipped with a barbecue and built-in brick benches. The tasteful interiors, furnished in a modern contemporary style, are balanced by warm earth tones and soft lighting. Autographed pictures of some of Italy's top thespians along with a collection of sketches, paintings and sculptures exalting the male form adorn the villa.
With the exception of the master bedroom, the main villa is mostly on ground level with very few steps to contend with. The ground floor rooms have large glass doors overlooking the garden and are flooded by natural light. Exceptionally large and welcoming, the eat-in kitchen comes with a wood burning oven, indoor grill and two dishwashers.
The main villa's three bedrooms are air conditioned, and the master bedroom boasts a fireplace. Screens are present in all bedrooms, the small living room and the cottage living room. The cottage is furnished on a simpler scale. Maid and meal service may be requested when booking. Firewood is included in the price.
A restaurant, a pizzeria and a shopping center, are less than half a mile from the villa. Captivating Palestrina, a seven minute drive away is where all immediate shopping and dining needs can be met. The town dates back to 700 bc and was built over the ruins of a vast Etruscan temple. Massive ancient walls, a museum filled with Roman and Etruscan artifacts, wonderful views and a completely undiscovered town await you.
Zagarolo, with even more dining choices, bears the same name as the DOC wine it produces and lies within a five minute drive in the opposite direction. Its commuter train station is just over a mile from Villa Adonis and offers 35 minute service to Rome. Trains run every half hour during peak times and hourly throughout the rest of the day.
Frascati, known for its wines is one of the famed Castelli Romani hill towns and is a mere 30 minute drive away. Tivoli, the home of Villa d'Este and Hadrian's palace, hosts an open air market on Wednesday and a Jazz festival the first week of July. It is reached in 35 minutes by car; L'Aquila: 70; Orvieto: 80; Caserta: 90; Gaeta: 100; Naples: 120.
If you are an old Boston cabbie like me, skip the train to Rome and drive. You'll be whipping around the Colosseum in less than 40 minutes.
