If you're looking for the perfect rental home for your vacation destination, then look no further. If your goal is to recharge, rejuvenate, and revitalize yourself then come home to Fiji and welcome to Vale Sekoula.
Vale Sekoula is a unique ocean front villa situated on Fiji's 3rd largest island Taveuni (Tah-vee-ew-nee). Considered to be the most beautiful island in Fiji and aptly named the Garden Island, it rightfully lives up to its name with tropical rain-forests, thick with vegetation and an array of indigenous flowers.
Vale Selouka translates into 'Flamboyant Tree' and when you experience the beautiful gardens of Vale Sekoula you'll understand how it got its name.
At Vale Sekoula we offer you accommodations in a private beachfront, two bedroom villa with all the luxuries and comforts you could ever want.
Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean while swimming in your own private, secluded pool. Rinse off from your ocean swim in your outdoor heated shower. Take the kayaks to a number of great snorkeling sites or simply swim out the front door where the snorkeling can also be quite good.
The master bedroom offers a king size bed with French doors leading to the pool and a breathtaking view of the ocean. Both bedrooms have ceiling fans that coupled with the refreshing breeze from the ocean makes for a restful night's sleep. The living room, with its cathedral ceiling, fans, comfortable furniture and state of the art entertainment centre is a great place to hang out. Chances are you will spend most of your time out on the deck, relaxing in your lounge chair, enjoying the gorgeous view of the gardens, ocean and islands beyond.
At the airport you will be greeted by Sepo and Buna who will take care of your every need during your stay. All housekeeping, maid service, and laundry will be looked after by Buna and Melia, while Sepo will help you book and arrange transportation to all of the local attractions, such as fishing, world class diving, hiking trips to Bouma Falls, the Wairiki Mission, and many more enjoyable activites.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need, to make from the simplest to even the most gourmet of meals. An outdoor gas grill is also provided. Buna will be glad to prepare any or all of your meals using local fresh meats, fish and produce. She will gladly share with you all of her secrets on preparing healthy mouthwatering dishes. Ask her to show you how to make her delicious breakfast smoothie, low calorie but so yummy.
You can take a nice stroll down the road to visit a number of quaint casual restaurants, or a short taxi ride can take you to a handful of other choices on the island. Prices are very reasonable at the majority of establishments.
Bhula Bhais, a general store is just a short walk down the road, where you can purchase most of your necessities. A short taxi ride takes you into the town of Somosomo, which offers a bank, post office, specialty shops, as well as a full grocery store. Buna will be glad to accompany you to help you decide on what groceries you should buy for your stay.
Have fun getting physical with a number of great activities; fish, swim, dive, snorkel, kayak, hike through rainforests and waterfalls or just relax in your own private pool, doing nothing at all.
Vale Sekoula offers you the perfect place to recharge, rejuvenate and revitalize yourself, mind, body and soul. Come visit us on the beautiful, tropical, un-crowded paradise of Taveuni.

Fiji
One of the world’s most exotic destinations, Fiji is a tropical paradise in the South Pacific, made up of 322 islands nearly two thousand miles east of Australia. Once feared as the haunt of cannibals and fierce warrior tribes, today Fiji is regarded as being inhabited by supremely friendly and welcoming people who are full of joie de vivre and consider it rude to rush. It has been said that Fiji is where people wear flowers in their hair not to impress, but simply because they like to.
Climate
Fiji enjoys an ideal South Sea tropical climate, with a trade wind blowing across the islands to keep things cool throughout most of the year. Maximum summer temperatures – November – April - average 88 F (31 C) - with winter temperatures – May – October – average 84 F (29 C) Rain can be expected at any time of the year, but usually occurs in brief showers, lasting only a few hours.
Fijian Currency
Your best exchange rate will be with Traveler’s Checks. Once you have landed at the airport, you will find numerous foreign exchange booths. There are always a few open 24 hours. Exchange your traveler’s checks for Fijian dollars. On Taveuni very few places accept credit cards and those that do usually add a surcharge to your bill. Some places will accept US dollars but not at the same exchange rate you will get at the airport. Whatever money you have left upon your return to the airport can always be exchanged back into your own currency prior to departure. Current exchange rate is approximately F$1.75/US$1.00.
Duty- Free Store
While at the Nadi airport you will find two duty-free stores. These are the best places to stock up on liquor, wine, beer, cigarettes. They have absolutely the lowest prices. They accept credit cards and foreign currency at good rates.
Language
English is the official language that is taught in school. You will also hear Fijian, Hindi and Chinese. Below are a few useful Fijian terms:
Hello Bula (mbula)
Good morning ni sa yadra (ni sah yan dra)
Yes io (ee-o)
Thank you vinaka (vee naka)
No seqa (senga)
Goodbye ni sa moce (ni sa mothey)
Health Services
Fiji is free of malaria and other major tropical diseases that are endemic to most tropical countries. No shots are required before traveling to Fiji. The water in Fiji is regularly government tested and is safe to drink. In fact, Fiji water is quite tasty and exported internationally. Taveuni has its own hospital, which has recently been renovated.

Taveuni (pronounced Tah-vee-ew-nee), the third largest island in Fiji, lies only 7 kilometers off the southeast coast of Vanua Levu and is 42 kilometers long and averages about 11 kilometers wide. It is known as the Garden Island for its abundance of magnificent jungle vegetation and rare indigenous flora. Flowers are aplenty on this lush Island. Orchids hang over waterfalls that plunge into jungle pools behind palm-fringed beaches.
Taveuni offers a rich natural history, in particular, a fine array of birdlife. Fortunately, unlike other islands in the Fiji archipelago, the mongoose was never introduced to Taveuni and consequently many of the birds that have vanished on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu still thrive on the Garden Island. There are many wild chickens, kula parrots and orange doves, which makes it a special place for bird watchers and bush walkers.
Visitors here can swim with manta rays, snorkel over coral gardens and scuba dive in what is classified as one of the world’s top dive sites. Dive The World - Swiss Fiji Divers Strong currents in the strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu nurture the truly magnificent corals.
Once home of fierce warriors, Taveuni residents still exude pride and confidence in their step. Taveuni is sparsely populated. Virtually all of the residents live in traditional Fijian villages and are quite hospitable.
A breathtakingly beautiful island, Taveuni has winding roads which weave through lush tropical forests, past magnificent waterfalls to suddenly reveal a sparking white beach where yours are the only footprints in the sand.
Hundreds of waterfalls crash down around the coastline, their waters so clean it is said that in the days of the sailing ships they would back up to them to refill their water tanks.
Insects and Animals
The mosquito population on the north end of Taveuni, where Vale Sekoula is located is extremely low, but be sure to bring some repellent for your rainforest walks. As with any tropical island you will encounter an occasional spider or gecko. Nothing on Taveuni is poisonous or dangerous.
If you're going to fly halfway around the globe to a tropical wonderland like Fiji, you better be certain to go to places you could never go, do the things you could never do, and leave with the feeling that there's nothing you could have ever done anywhere else. Such are the activities on Taveuni.
Bouma Falls
Bouma Falls is a must see attraction. It is located in Tavoro National Park, approximately 30 minutes by taxi. The first waterfall is a 10 minute walk from the entrance. The area around the falls has been landscaped and picnic tables and changing areas have been added. The waterfall is approximately 80 feet in height and falls into a refreshing pool where one can swim and dive off the rocks. If you are feeling energetic, a wonderful trail has been built up to the second and third waterfalls. It will take you 40 minutes to walk to the second falls and an additional 20 minutes to the third. This is a great ½ day trip. Bring an old pair of runners to make the climb more enjoyable.
International Dateline
The 180th Meridian cuts straight through Taveuni but for workability, the International Dateline doglegs around Fiji so that everyone is operating on the same time. Along the water side of the road towards Wairiki, you’ll see a small, red survey beacon marking the spot. If you take the road up hill from Waiyevo (towards the hospital) and cross the field on the right, you’ll find a large board in honour of the meridian, with local information and a map. It’s the only place in the world where you can have one foot in yesterday and one in today.
Wairiki Mission
Situated on the edge of a splendid coconut plantation, the Wairiki Mission also known as Taveuni Catholic mission, is a good example of British colonial Romanesque architecture. Located on a hill, it overlooks the historic site where Taveuni warriors turned back thousands of invading Tongans in a battle that was fought in canoes just off the beach. It was this particular battle that turned the tide in a war that had seen the Tongans take over much of Fiji. The locals celebrated by cooking their enemies and eating them with breadfruit. Modern day visitors are invited to attend Mass on Sundays from 7 am to 9 am. Mass here should not be missed as the singing is wonderful. Please remove your shoes before entering and please contribute to the church fund before you leave.
Warrior Burial Cave
Created by a lava tube, this cave is about 350 meters long and terminates at the ocean edge. In former times it was used by Fijians as a secret burial cave for warriors. It is believed that Taveuni’s greatest warriors were buried here in order to keep their remains hidden from enemies. Most of the large bones were removed in the 1950s after the cave was found. Guides will proudly show you the biers where their ancestors were laid to rest. As one would expect the cave is dark and damp. Be sure to bring along a pair of hiking shoes and a flash light. The entire trip, which includes a look at Soqulu Plantation, takes about 3 hours.
Waitavala Waterslide
Approximately 20 minutes by taxi or travel with the locals by bus, this natural waterslide is a picturesque spot, secluded and fun to explore. The slide is a little tricky but worth the ride for the adventurous type. Wear some old shorts. You should stop at the Cannibal Café for lunch. You can easily combine this trip with the one to the Wairiki Mission.
Bird Watching at Des Voeux Peak
Taveuni is host to nearly all of the birds found in Fiji. Des Voeux Peak at dawn is the place to be if you are a keen bird watcher. Many experts describe it as a very memorable experience. In particular, you may catch sight of the Orange Breasted Dove and the Silktail, found nowhere else in the world. The entire trip takes 4 to 5 hours and can be a bit rugged. Make sure to bring along some water and a few snacks.
Bird Watching at Qeleni
Qeleni Village is located in the hills at the northern end of the island. It takes approximately 20 minutes by taxi, and then you drive along a three – mile road up a mountainside. August and September are great months as the birds are nesting. Parrots, Silktail, Ferntails and Orange Breasted Doves are quite easy to spot especially in the early morning. You should leave the house by 5 am and don’t forget to have a hearty breakfast as you will descend the 3 mile trail on foot.
Vidawa Forest Excursion
Looking to get some great exercise? Then you will enjoy this 3-4 hour wilderness walk through pristine protected rainforest, including the historic Navuga Village. The trip is fully escorted with local Fijian guides who will tell you much about the traditional use of the forest, the flora and the fauna. Lunch is prepared and served enroute by native villagers. End your day with a swim at Bouma Waterfalls and afternoon tea. Wear a pair of old runners and be prepared to burn some calories.
Lavena Village, Coastal walk and Wainibau Waterfalls
First start out with a magnificent 45 minute drive to Lavena village. From the village it is a leisurely walk along the beach to the river. From the river, you follow the path a ways. At the end of the path, leave your clothes and swim up stream a few hundred feet. Usually the water is shallow and you can wade up river most of the way. The river makes a sharp bend and you will behold a spectacular box canyon with two marvelous waterfalls. This is a day trip so pack a healthy lunch. The water at the falls is pure, so drink your fill. Don’t forget to wear your swimsuit and bring good walking shoes.
Lake Tagimoucia
Lake Tagimoucia is considered the most famous geographical landmark on Taveuni. It is located in an old crater, 2500 feet in the mountains. The lake which is filled with floating masses of vegetation is also home to Fiji’s most famous and beautiful flower, the “tagimoucia”, which produces red blooms with white centers. The flower blooms from the end of September to end of December. The hike to the lake is a work out so make sure you have your hiking shoes on. The round-trip takes approximately 8 hours, which includes stops and a picnic lunch.
Naselesele and Qeleni Villages
It is first proper to ask the village Chiefs permission to tour his village. Come with a bag of kava and contribute $5.00 per person to their school or church fund and you will be welcomed with open arms. Naselesele is a 20 minute walk. You will need a taxi to take you to Qeleni. Fijians love to have their picture taken, so don’t forget your camera. The children love candy, so a bag of hard candy would be a big hit with them. Proper etiquette dictates that you remove your hat and sunglasses in all villages. Ladies need to have their knees covered, so be sure to wear a skirt or a sulu. No one should have bare shoulders, nor point or touch a villager on the head. The head is the most sacred part of the body. You really should visit at least one Village during your stay. It’s an experience not to be missed.
Vale Sekoula is located on Taveuni, one of the 322 islands that make up the Fiji archipelago. A breathtakingly beautiful island with winding roads which weave through lush tropical forests, past magnificent waterfalls to suddenly reveal a sparkling white beach where yours are the only footprints in the sand.
