It is a quiet, peaceful place - this acre of pine, spruce and aspen forest - in the beautiful San Juan Mountain Range of the Colorado Rockies. This is where our Spruce Mesa House offers you an opportunity to escape from the stress and hustle /bustle of your 'real life' to your 'ideal life' in this vacation wonderland.
The Spruce Mesa House is beautifully unique. The french doors off the foyer lead to a spacious family room with wood burning fireplace, windows facing the 10,000 ft mountains, rich antique wide blank wood flooring and a cozy reading area. Follow the french doors off this room to a wonderful covered patio- a perfect place to watch the sun come up through the 15 acres of woods with a steaming cup of coffee. Or just gently swing away the hours, listening to the song birds on the porch swing. You never know when you might see a deer or elk and you will certainly see squirrels and chipmunks scampering by!
The home boasts two bedrooms and a sleeping loft and comfortably sleeps six persons (eight with the double sofa bed). The spacious master suite has large windows facing the mountains and a cherry wood ensuite bathroom to die for!. Sip a glass of wine and soak in the oversized jacuzzi tub for two looking out of the french doors to the woods. (In the winter, it is magical to watch the snow gently falling.) The french doors lead to a large deck that is perfect for private sunbathing or just relaxing. A separate water closet with a second sink, a shower and washer/dryer (behind folding doors) complete this spa type bathroom/bedroom. The second smaller bedroom has an office area and twin trundle beds. Plus there is a cozy sleeping loft with a double bed. A custom rustic bathroom with shower is just steps away.
Family meals will be very special in the Spruce Mesa House. The full kitchen with pantry, dishwasher, etc opens up to the large dining room. Huge windows look out onto the woods on three sides and since this part of the house is a bit elevated you truly get the feeling of dining actually in the trees. This is especially so on the second outdoor deck off the dining room where you will find the gas BBQ and comfortable outdoor dining furniture.
As special as this home is, the best part is the location. You can hike out the back door to the beautiful Electra Lake. (If you rent the video 'The Naked Spur' with Jimmy Stewart made in the 1950's, you will see this lake. It hasn’t changed much!!) It is still pristine with a backdrop of mountains. Have a delicious dinner in an old sporting club right on this lake. You bring your own bottle of wine , sit by the windows and take in one of the most beautiful high mountain lakes anywhere! You will be enchanted as you watch the sun go down on the near 14,000 ft peak of Engineer Mountain.
We consider a perfect day to canoe on this lake in the early morning and catch our lunch (great trout!) while we relax in the near perfect weather. Speaking of weather, there is very little humidity and our location (while only 20 minutes from downtown Durango) is about 2000 ft higher where you enjoy a 8-10 degree temperature drop. That means your summer days are usually in the 70-80's and the nights usually drop down to the 50-60's.
Only 12 minutes away is the ski/summer resort of Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory Mountain.) If Colorado powder at a undiscovered jewel for wonderful downhill skiing/boarding is what you crave - this is the place. No long lift lines, no pretense - just a gorgeous mountain with (according to Ski Magazine - year after year) the best weather of all U.S. ski resorts. (We enjoy over 300 days of sunshine. )Sleigh rides, snowshoeing, tubing hills, snowmobiling and even dog sled riding offer a fun filled winter vacation. In the summer, the resort (home of the first downhill mountain biking World Cup) offers some of the best mountain biking for all abilities, alpine slides, nature hikes, kids day camp, trampolines, miniature golf etc etc. Throughout the summer the “Big Tent” goes up and “Music in the Mountains” and other festivals make this summer resort a great place to be.
Don’t forget incredible high mountain jeep tours and horse back riding!!! Within 15 minutes of The Spruce Mesa House, we have maps for you of 6 of the most beautiful hikes in the Durango area.
A 20 minute drive takes you to the western historic town of Durango. You will pass a wonderful golf course, outdoor hot springs and riding stables on your way to this quaint town. Catch the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for the ride of your life through high mountain passes to the historic mining town of Silverton. Or head out to Mesa Verde National Park home of the ancient “Cliff Dwellers”. Bicycle along the river on our newly finished bike bath and stop at The River Rat Café for lunch. There you can watch the rafters enjoying some white water on our Animas River which runs right through town. Catch a raft yourself or catch some trout with a little fly fishing. The river offers it all.!!
