If you are searching for calm, peaceful days to enjoy the sun and the sand, Cancun boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with its powdery coral sand. Cancun is a snorkel and scuba diving paradise; the lagoon enclosed by the -L- shape of the island is ideal for sailing and water-skiing. Deep-sea fishing and diving are fantastic in the open sea, which stretches out in shades of light-green to turquoise from the shoreline to the horizon. You may also enjoy a visit to the surrounding areas, with excursions to the mysterious Mayan archaeological sites of Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza or Uxmal. Water Sports & Activies
Cancun definitely lives up to its reputation as a water sports capital. Here you can scuba dive, snorkel, windsurf, parasail, kayak, water ski, jet ski, fish, swim with the dolphins or just enjoy the beach. Most of the action takes place on the northern beaches and in Laguna Nichupté, a large lagoon with fresh and salt water located between the mainland and the Hotel Zone. This combination of ocean and lagoon is why Cancun has so much to offer in the way of water sports. The World's secold largest natural reef makes for breathtaking snorkling excursions. Whatever your water sport, there are lots of places to get you started.
Golf Information
Cancun is home to two beautiful 18 hole championship golf courses. One is the Pok-Ta-Pok course which runs along the the coast of the Caribbean Sea and also the Nichupté Lagoon, the other is the Hilton Cancun Golf Club course that hugs the shores of the Nichupté Lagoon near the Mayan ruins of El Rey on Boulevard Kukulcán. Cancun's newest course, a Jack signature course, is located about 15 minutes west of the hotel zone on the road to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The Golf Club at Moon Palace is a 7,201 yard course laid out among the areas natural mangroves. The course also features a modern club house which houses a complete spa. On February 19, 2007, The Fairmont Mayakoba's El Camaleon Golf Club will be the host of the “Mayakoba Classic”, PGA TOUR’s first official golf event in Mexico. This Greg Norman designed course bends through three distinct landscapes - tropical jungle, dense mangroves, and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bisected by massive limestone canals. There is even a cenote, a massive, ancient cavern common to the area, into the heart of the opening fairway.
Day Trips & Excursions
In addition to being an incredible resort town, Cancun has exciting excursions available to visitors. You must remember you are in the land of the Maya and also the Caribbean. There are other very interesting and incredibly beautiful places to visit, just a short distance away from Cancun. All of the places listed on this page can be visited in a day, although you may want to allot more time than that. A new four lane highway now stretches almost all the way to Tulum, making for easy day trips to Playa del Carmen, Xcaret, Xel Ha, Tulum and even Coba. Cozumel can be reached by way of ferry from Playa del Carmen or plane from Cancun and Isla Mujeres is just a short boat ride from Cancun. Plan some time to visit one or more of the ruins or beautiful islands or parks.
