Property Information
Puerto Ayora is a little town (pop. 10,000) situated on Santa Cruz Island, in the heart of the Galapagos Islands. The airport island of Baltra, situated only a couple of hundred meters to the north of Santa Cruz, is a legacy from the Second World War. Since then, aircraft have provided easy access to Santa Cruz, and, via the one road that crosses it in 40 minutes, to Puerto Ayora in the South.

Although live-aboard cruises provide the best way to see the Galapagos Islands, a land-based alternative, like Cactuspad, is a much more economic alternative. Puerto Ayora provides a springboard for several day tours and dive tours to nearby islands, while Santa Cruz itself offers some great sites to visit, including idyllic beaches, giant tortoises in their natural habitat and the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Cactuspad is a newly built house (2003-4) located in a quiet, residential neighborhood five minutes walk from the “center” of town/restaurants/sea. It has been built with international aesthetics in mind: cool, white, Mediterranean feel with a blue roof, with green grass and abundant climbing flowers and hanging plants from France and Britain. In respect for the unique surroundings of this special area, we have included native and endemic flora in our gardens.

The house also aims for maximum comfort while at the same time minimizing environmental impact due to its unique location.

Directions

When flying to Galápagos, you should fly into Baltra Island. From here catch the bus that goes to the ‘Canal’, (not the ‘Muelle’). This bus will take you to the southern coast of Baltra Island, where you will board a foot ferry (80c per person), placing your luggage on top. At the other side, get a taxi which will take you the 42km across the island to Puerto Ayora for $15. Upon arrival at Puerto Ayora, the driver will ask where you wish to be dropped off. Ask for: ‘El Eden, Perimetral, Frente la casa de la Doctora Carrion.’. At the crossroads where you’re dropped off, you’ll see the house with the blue roof. Use the plan on this site to find the entrance.

If you wish, we can organize a ‘transfer’ for you from the airport to the house for $30 (plus $0.80 per person), including the taxi fee. We’ll send taxi drivers who work with us regularly and will help you with your luggage and will know where our accommodations are.

Climate

There are two main seasons in Galapagos: a hot, wet season lasting from January to April and a cool, dry season lasting from May to December. The rainy season tends to have occasional tropical showers and is hot, still and calm. The average air temperature is 30ºC and water temperature, 26ºC.

The cool, ‘dry’ season doesn’t have the tropical rains of the wet months but light drizzles or low cloud will sometimes occur. Days are bright and sunny and a comfortable temperature, although there can also be days of prolonged gray skies during this season. The average air temperature is 24ºC and water temperature 19ºC.

The change-over seasons are often compared to springtime, giving the best of both worlds: warm days and water and blue skies. In theory, these are the months of December/January and April/May, but as with all weather, there are no clear dates.

To compound things further, every several years, and with no pattern or schedule, the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon occurs. This brings rainfalls one hundred times more than average, air temperature of up to 35ºC, and water temperature of about 30ºC.

    What You Will See

The Galapagos archipelago is home to some of the highest levels of endemism (species found nowhere else on earth) anywhere on the planet. About 80% of the land birds you will see, 97% of the reptiles and land mammals, and more than 30% of the plants are endemic. More than 20% of the marine species in Galapagos are found nowhere else on earth. Favorites include the giant Galapagos tortoise, marine iguana, flightless cormorant, and the Galapagos penguin—the only penguin species to be found in the Northern Hemisphere.
