Labrador Pond Cottage Rental Overview
Labrador Pond, Maine, United States
Vacation Rental Description
The summer cottage built about 1920 sits on Labrador Pond (a true lake) in the rolling hills of a scenic wooded farm area in Oxford County, Maine. It has an old-time feeling and is comfortably furnished. The lake is about 3/4 by 1 mile in size, located 25 miles northwest of Lewiston (about 40 miles south of Augusta.) The cottage is built on a point of land that juts out into the lake, overlooking water on two of its four sides with a western view of mountains and sunsets.
Set amidst white birch and oak trees with wild grapes and blueberries growing nearby, the cottage is about 150 feet from a small blacktop country road. 9-10 houses are clustered on the eastern shore of the lake; the western shore of the lake is a wild bird preserve, with ducks and loons, and will remain undeveloped. The feeling here is secluded, but not isolated.
The cottage has a large kitchen-dining room (facing over the water by the dining table) and gets a generous dose of morning sun at the breakfast table. This room has a microwave, refrigerator, electric range, wood-burning stove, two oak tables and a full set of cookware and dishes, eating utensils, etc. A small sitting room contains a second wood-burning stove and attractive sofa, chaise and chairs. There is a CD/Tape/Radio player. You may bring (or rent locally) a TV/VCR for rainy day videos.
Just beyond that room is a long screened porch facing the lake through the trees, which allows for pleasant sitting during the glorious sunset, or sleeping (as we do) on the double bed during summer nights. The kitchen and bath (tub shower) have hot and cold sweet running water pumped from a well spring.
On the second floor, facing westward over the lake, is one large bedroom with one double bed and two twin beds. A picture window overlooks the lake. Another large bedroom with a double bed faces east over the lawn. A phone is provided for incoming and local calls only. A Weber grill and picnic table are available for barbecues. The cottage is amply supplied with bed linens and bath towels. Bring beach towels if you wish.Swimming is excellent. The long narrow sand beach has a wide shallow water swimming area just across from the cottage. The water stays shallow (two to four feet) at least 50-60 feet out from the shoreline, providing a safe area for children and non-swimmers.There is a swimming float and inner tubes are available for floating. The canoe is docked off the pier.

The lake abounds with food for the fisherman: plentiful bass, lake trout, perch and pickerel. Many trout streams are nearby. Large mouth bass hide out in the reeds at the far
south (left) end of the lake. Hula hoppers and jitterbugs work well for these and red
daredevils for the pickerel.
Oxford County is justifiably renowned for its mineral mines for rockhounds, beautiful colonial houses, churches and historical sites (Abe Lincoln's first vice-president, Hannibal Hamlin, was from nearby Paris Hill, seven miles away.) There is a full schedule of weekly auto races, summer fairs, antique places by the score, summer theater and auctions. This area is definitely an antique collector's dream. Be sure to visit the antique stores in Hallowell if you drive up to the Augusta area for fairs or a trip to the lovely state capital. There is a summer theater en route to Augusta in Monmouth, the Shaker Village. At least seven or eight movie theaters are within a 25 mile drive, as well as a mini-golf course at nearby Bear Pond. Lobsters can be bought in Paris or Norway, and the seashore offers a tempting side trip.
Swimming is excellent. The long narrow sand beach has a wide shallow water swimming area just across from the cottage. The water stays shallow (two to four feet) at least 50-60 feet out from the shoreline, providing a safe area for children and non-swimmers. There is a dock, a float to swim to, and inner tubes.
