Welcome to an island that is "... too beautiful." No matter the season, Madeline Island, embraced by the deep waters of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin, is a magical place - shorelines, both serene and dramatic, quiet, perfumed woodland trails, abundant wild life, clear, sparkling skies.
The pure, clean air over Lake Superior is bracing to breathe, provides brilliant sunrises and sunsets, and awe-inspiring displays of the night sky. In the fall the trees put on a spectacular display. And winter has its special beauty, with a silence so deep you can hear the snowflakes as they touch the ground.
Once the home of the Dakota Sioux and Ojibway, and French and Canadian fur traders, Madeline Island has a long and colorful history that somehow, even today, contributes to the magic of the island.
Step onto the ferry and you begin a journey into another world-free of the stress of today's "rat race" lifestyle. You can feel the tension drain from your body as the shore of the mainland recedes behind you and the ferry heads for "the jewel of the Apostle Islands."
