Property Information

We want you to enjoy your stay in this beautiful High Desert country. The air is unusually crisp, the views across Taos Valley are some of the most spectacular anywhere in the world. The ambiance of this adobe home elicits the spirits of sacred Taos Mountain just east of the house. You are in very old Indian country with much spiritual meaning......we hope you will have as much pleasure being here as we have, knowing someone is here enjoying the beauty of this ancient land.

There are many trails to hike in the mountains, white water rafting, great restaurants, fantastic skiing and more art galleries than you can possibly visit in one stay. While you are here you should take the time to drive out to the bridge above the Rio Grande river gorge. It is a spectacular site....650 feet above the river. The gorge is an ancient crack in in the earth's crust resulting from an earth quake occurring millions of years ago when this valley was filled with volcanic activity. Along with the geological history the spiritual history of this area is awesome! The Indians have very strong feelings about their ancient lands and it is difficult to behere and not feel that spiritual influence.

In addition to the fantastic views and cultural inspirations....nature is always present with sounds of the coyotes, birds chirping, the wind in the trees and the endless panorama of the ever changing skies......you will never be closer to the Spirits of Creation than here! Many of you will have a hard time dragging yourself away from the views and the cozy fireplaces.....whatever your pleasure, please enjoy!

The fires in the "Kivas" (fireplaces) must be built in "teepee" / style with the wood stacked to a point so that the flame is drawn up into the chimney. You will be amazed at the heat that the fireplaces put out....and as you stare into the flickering fires your mind will drift and all the tensions you may have brought to these ancient

lands will melt away.

Art and Artists

The art of the Southwest is very unique. We have been very fortunate to have been able to acquire several very nice pieces for our home here in Taos. Many people who come to the area have a real interest in the art and artist so we are including some information on each piece, plus the gallery which represents the particular artist locally.

Starting with the west end wall with "Fancy Dancer" a serigraph by John Nieto a Contemporary Master born into a family of American Indian and Spanish descent. John Nieto's work has been exhibited internationally form the Smithsonian Institute to one-man shows at the Axis Gallery in Tokyo. One of his most celebrated pieces "Delegate to the White House" resides in the Presidential collection of former President Ronald Reagan.

Moving around to the north wall is an acrylic by Dolona Roberts titled "Plaza Blankets". Dolona Roberts, a renowned painter of Cherokee heritage, was born in Santa Fe in 1936 A characteristic common to her images in the "Blanket Series" is that the faces of the Indians are always turned away from the observer. Also by Dolona are four small acrylic on paper from her "Tablitas" series and these are located on both sides of the Kiva in the living room.

Along the north wall is a Jim Prindiville watercolor titled "Blue Mesa". To the right of "Blue Mesa" is an unusual piece, "Welcoming Resound", done in "Casein" by a couple, John Walker and Roxanne Moore a husband and wife team. They both paint on each of their works...beautiful work with a unique approach. They are represented at the Variant Gallery at 135 N. Plaza just south off the Plaza.

Just above the dictionary is a small oil on canvas by Marlin Linville titled "Melting Snow". Marlin is represented at the Brazos Gallery on Bent Street.

On the east wall in the dining room, to the left of the master bedroom door is an egg tempra by oil by Pat Harrison titled "Snow Fence" . To the right of the bedroom door is a pastel, "Indian Princess" by Jane Mabry.

On the south wall of the dining room is a large water color by Silvia Grycner entitled "Parrot Tulip" On the south wall on the other side of the doorway is an "Embossed Print" by Ed Morgan entitled "Once Upon A Blue Moon". This came from the Morgan Gallery on Bent Street.

In the Master Suite above the bed is an original acrylic on canvas by Jim Prindiville entitled "Warrior with Sacred Thunder Shield". This original painting has been reproduced as prints and also on cards. It reflects the sacred nature of the buffalo hunt to the Indians.

In the middle bedroom on the north wall is an R.C. Gorman lithograph entitled "Chile Basket". R.C. Gorman is represented at his own gallery, The Navaho Gallery on Ledoux Street in Taos.

In the Sun Room on the east wall is lithograph by Malcomb Furlow entitled "Cheyenne Rider". Mr. Furlow is a well known western artist who has his home a few miles west of Taos. His work is represented at the El Taller Gallery on Ledoux Street.

Also in the Sun Room on the North wall is "Red Canon", an "Iris" print by Isa Barnett. is represented at the Brazos Gallery on Bent Street.

In the kitchen on the west wall is an oil on canvas by Tom Murray entitled "Cloud Sky Over the Gorge. Tom is represented at the Shriver Gallery at 401 North Pueblo Road, downtown (near the Kochina Lodge).

In the master bedroom on the east wall is another Tom Murray entitled "Taos Clouds". We think Tom has captured those fantastic Taos skies better than anyone we have seen. Really an outstanding young artist.

Restaurants

There are so many excellent restaurants that it is hard to know where to start. Many of the good restaurants are very "local" in nature and not the type that you would normally drive by and think "we must try that one". As I'm sure you will discover, Taos is a very laid back little town. Those who call this their home usually march to the beat of a different drummer. The atmosphere of the community lends itself to this attitude....one which is far less imposing or ostentatious than Santa Fe.....therefore, the "local" restaurants reflect this attitude........ particularly two restaurants....El Pueblo Cafe on the north edge of town and The Main Street Bakery in Guadeloupe Plaza just off La Placita behind the main Plaza. Both are quite local but the food is fantastic. Both have great Mexican food.....I think the best in town....El Pueblo has the best Sopaipillas I have ever eaten. If you like Mexican/New Mexican food you must try these two local restaurants.

Just down the road from the house is the small town of Arroyo Seco( dry river bed) and the several excellent places to eat. First, on your left as you are going towards Taos is "Abe's Bar and Restaurant" ......you must go down some morning and have their Breakfast Burritos......we like to add a little Worcestershire Sauce....but they are to die for!! It is a 1.8 mile walk from the house if you wish to start the day with a little exercise! I had better warn you, the walk down is easy.....the walk back up.....at 8000 feet is a real test of your cardiovascular system......you will find the need to stop often and enjoy the scenery!!

After you leave Arroyo Seco heading towards town....and I do mean just after....just around a curve you will see a sign for "Vida" one of the finest restaurants in the area. The building is an old hacienda which the owners have transformed into a remarkable restaurant. The bar/lounge has a fireplace at one end with lots of comfortable chairs and a piano. On weekends there is live jazz played by one of the many local, talented groups. It really is a must while visiting the area.

A small but very good Mexican restaurant is located at the end of Bent Street....the Tapas de Taos Cafe - 758-9670. Real Mexican food......very good. Just up the street is The Apple Tree - 758-1900, great lunch with excellent soups. In the evening you might want to try their filet mignon....one of the best you will ever have. Just across the street from The Apple Tree is the Bent Street Deli -758-5758, another great breakfast and lunch spot. Great sandwiches and soups......I would especially recommend their Ruben sandwich....outstanding! Right on the Plaza is Olgelvies - 758-8866.....traditional Mexican food....very pleasant atmosphere and excellent food.

Also downtown is Eske's Brew Pub.....great beer...no smoking...food is not fancy but very good!

Just beyond McDonalds on the left, back in a little strip mall is La Luna Ristorante-751-0023, a great Italian restaurant! Nice atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices....one of our favorites.

Moving south out of the downtown area you will come to Lambert's - 758-1009 - on the left side of the road. A little more upscale....very good food....I especially like their roast pork loin with garlic mashed potatoes with fantastic Chipotle gravy.....a real must try! If you are of a vegetarian bent then ask them to give you the garlic mashed potatoes with their mixed vegetables...AND the gravy....out of this world!!! They also have an excellent wine list and a good rack of lamb.

Driving south to Ranchos de Taos you will find two more great restaurants, the "Ranchos Trading Post" and "Joseph's Table" both outstanding restaurants and certainly worth the trip....."Joseph's" is small and popular so reservations are recommended.

About 5 miles south of town is the Stakeout Grill and Bar - 758-2042. A pretty good drive but really worth it. Great views of Taos Valley...especially at sunset! The food is outstanding....I guess it has to be to be that far out of town and still be successful. Wonderful dining outside on the patio in the Summer!

It seems there is always a new restaurant we hear about...and I'm sure you can find a good one which I haven't mentioned. Be brave....I don't think you will have a bad experience anywhere.
