Testimonials
We loved Ca’Barnaba. For our needs as a couple it was perfect. We are generally more interested in cozy charm than opulence, and Ca’Barnaba was as cozy as we could have hoped. Returning to it as a warm haven after long days of wandering in the November chill was a wonderful treat!
It’s hard to say what we liked best. We LOVED having an intimate view on the small Rio Malapaga. As others have mentioned, there’s nothing like having small working boats (or even the occasional gondola!) cruise past while you’re eating breakfast in your PJs! We are both suckers for water and being able to gaze out on a bit of canal was just heaven. It was always a moment of magic when crossing the Ponte Malapaga to gaze towards the Grand Canal and see our own window on the charming canal… The furnishings and decoration were charming and inviting, the semi-open plan with beamed ceiling fit our tastes exactly. The location was (as promised) truly ideal; many places we considered claimed that, but we honestly can’t imagine a better location. Our only regret was that the weather was cold enough that we never had opportunity to enjoy the intimate courtyard for our coffee in the morning!
The only surprise of any kind was that we had only the briefest interaction with the keyholder (owner?) when we arrived, who showed us where to find the keys (and that’s all!); we had come prepared to leave a deposit but none was collected(!) – we did our best to leave the place spotless of course so that was fine. The only unpleasant part of our stay was having to return home! The only things that would improve Ca’Barnaba would be a phone and high-speed internet access, but honestly we found the absence of neither a problem. Oh and a full Victorian bathtub.
Try the great selection of inexpensive local wine and fantastic cheeses at the supermarket! Not the most glamorous place to get them, but a great way to survey local tastes in the comfort of your own home! Be sure to walk the short way to the Squero di San Trovaso, where even after dark during the week we were able to watch gondoli being worked on – in fact, going after dark was a benefit (at least in the winter when it gets dark so early and they’re still open), because we could clearly see what was going on in the illuminated workshop! Right across the Rio San Trovaso from where the squero is is the definitely-not-to-be-missed Gelato di Squero, which had my favorite gelato of our whole stay (and we tried different ones every day)… the best flavor I’ve ever had was their Pera (pear). Mmmmm. Right up the street (north/towards the Grand Canal and Accademia) on the same side of the canal as Gelato di Squero is a great osteria/wine bar that is a much-trafficked favorite local hangout, we had amazing snacks and drinks there one early evening and wished we had gone every night! A bit more of a walk but a true highlight of our trip was meeting Gilberto Penzo in San Polo, his models of Venetian watercraft are fascinating but his willingness to spend time to share some of his knowledge with you is the real treat. He’s famous for his affordable model gondola kits; we brought one home but we’re even more excited at being able to buy a half-scale forcole from him (the open oarlock used on gondoli and other rowed Venetian boats); they’re beautiful as sculptural objects and distinctly evocative of Futurist sculpture. Being vegetarian we had a bit more legwork to do to find great food, it’s worth mentioning that Ganesh Ji in San Polo makes quite passable north Indian – and were happy to give us our leftovers in a box for takeaway, which we enjoyed thanks to the kitchen and kitchenware in our rental. Oh and finally, we found the Ai Artisti osteria/restaurant on Toletta to be very friendly, I asked for recommendations on local reds and was to my surprise rewarded with a series of delicious varietals I’d never heard of (and can’t remember, of course); even more surprising was finding when we closed our tab that we’d been treated to a glass and charged prices for the other glasses lower than almost everything on the extensive board. Finally if you’ve never had a spritz, be sure to try on in Venice! I did and now I have another vice, alas!

The location is fabulous, just one bridge from the vaporetto. We loved the large window on the canal, it includes one in the daily life of Venice. The beds are excellent, and the bathrooms are adequate. This apartment has a lot of charm, with a wonderful cortile ( courtyard) How convenient to have a small Osteria next door, where we started each day with a cappuctino. The hosts were very accomodating and knowledgable and were helpful when needed. They even iron the sheets! The house stays cook because its on the ground level. I've been told that the apartment has never had water enter, even though it is on the ground floor, and there was never any musty smell to it, however, because you are on the ground floor, the apartment does tend to get a little dusty. We stayed here a month and were very happy with our accomodations. Note that the kitchen is not a fully equipped one so don't expect to whip up a gourmet meal, but it was fine for light meals. The refrigerator was not large, but it was fun to do daily shopping. The apartment was peacefull and very quiet.
Note: we suggest you get a vaporreto pass, it saves money. and a trip to the KLEMPT in the ca'Pesaro is worth a visit.
