Midtown East is Manhattan's densest business district. The residential areas are generally found on the east side of Lexington Ave. Midtown East is centrally located, with great transportation (6 subway lines and Grand Central Station). Midtown East completes the New York Corporate image: Financial institutions, law firms and luxurious hotels and magnificent luxury towers. Many ethnic restaurants, cozy cafes, swanky lounges, and a very popular bar scene give this neighborhood more than a modicum of downtown flair. Also, uptown elegance is manifested with a tantalizing mix of residential options: luxury residential high-rises, beautiful turn-of-the-century townhouses, exquisite pre-war buildings, brownstones, and well-maintained co-ops and condos.
Midtown East, the liveliest business sections in the city, offers beautiful new luxury buildings as well as old world charm. Located between 30th and 59th Streets on the East Side, this area is home to many corporations such as Met Life and Citicorp as well as the United Nations. The center of Midtown East is Grand Central Station, which has been magnificently renovated, and is an architectural marvel lined with shops and restaurants. With the art deco Chrysler Building illuminating the skyline, every style of home is available in this neighborhood. Midtown East also has a few notable landmarks to its credit. The Morgan Library and Sniffen Court carriage houses on 36th Street are architectural masterpieces as is the Gilbert-designed Beaux Arts mansion.
New luxury high-rise buildings are popular among professionals who choose to live close to work. Despite being one of the busiest places by day, there is no shortage of nightlife here. Numerous delicious restaurants, alluring shops, and jazzy local bars keep residents alive at night.
On the east side of this neighborhood, there are two prestigeous residential neigborhoods called Sutton Place and Beekman Place. These small enclaves along the East River have some of the most elegants buildings in Manhattan. . Sutton Place has two public parks, one at 57th Street and another at 53rd Street, while Beekman Place has only one. Sutton Place has two townhouse rows. The ones on the east side of 57th and the south side of 58th Street between Sutton Place and the river all share a large communal garden. 58th Street east of Sutton Place is known as Sutton Square, a name also given to the block of townhouses with the communal garden. Near the middle of the garden that slopes down to a promenade along the river, and over the F.D.R. Drive, is a large tree with a swing hanging down from one of its quite high branches. At the end of the street named Sutton Square is Riverview Terrace, a short private street with several townhouses that stretch to the north and overlook the East River. One gets a sense in both Sutton Place and Beekman Place and Gramercy Park of how much greater New York could be for these eccentric neighborhoods are refined, comfortable, cozy, and redolent with a sense of peacefulness, respect for the environment, and caring for sane values of good-neighborliness.
Along the East River between 42nd and 40th Street, there is an area called Tudor City, which is a series of six beautiful and architecturally ornate prewar doorman buildings built around two private, quiet, wooded gardens. Many apartments have great views of the United Nations Building and the East River.
Just south of Midtown east you can find the areas of Murray Hill and Kips Bay. Peaceful and super convenient to anywhere in Manhattan, Murray Hill residents can walk to Midtown work places and still return home to a quiet community. Murray Hill has plenty of good restaurants, but shopping and entertainment is a 10 minute walk in any direction. Murray Hill's residents are predominately middle aged, Midtown professionals that take pleasure in their local cafes and convenience to Midtown. Kips Bay is now a quiet and comfortable location. Somewhat understated until recently, this neighborhood is becoming more and more popular with stylish young professionals. Some might say it's the lure of the fantastic ethnic restaurants along Lexington and Third Avenues that has drawn new residents to the area. Others might say it's the enjoyable evening entertainment. The real draw, though, is its proximity to Midtown's business district and Downtown's nightlife. Both are only a walk or short ride away. Because of its smart locale, new boutiques and businesses have also moved in. Notably, Kips Bay is the center of Medicine in the city. It is home to the New York University School of Medicine and Dentistry, Bellevue Hospital, and the Chief Medical Examiners Office. As result, many doctors and hospital staff live here too. Most of Kip Bay's residents live in attractive apartment buildings, as many of the brownstones and townhouses are gone.
Located between Fifth Avenue and the East River and stretching from 34th to 40th Street, Murray Hill draws many young professionals due to its relative affordability and proximity to midtown. This neighborhood has grown in the last few years primarily due to its prime location. It is only a stone's throw away from midtown's business district and a quick ride to downtown's myriad, eclectic enticements. |
