Live in the lap of luxury in this stunningly renovated Key West classic "Eyebrow House". An esteemed Key West renovation builder assembled a creative team of elite woodworkers, masons, local craftspeople, and an internationally known traveling artist / sailor to execute his plans. The interior designer owner put on the finishing touches with an eclectic collection of upscale classic, modern, and island dÈcor. This combined effort has created a dream worthy island home.
The main concept behind the builder's design was to refocus the main living areas to the large fenced back yard and create a tropical ambience for indoor / outdoor living and lounging. This was accomplished by placing multiple sets of double French doors all along the back wall of the open great room / kitchen that lead to the spacious wooden deck and brand new heated pool with trickling waterfall. Recessed halogen lighting was added to the great room to compliment the open wood beams and bounce light to the highly polished wood floors. High end furnishings include sofa, chairs, dining table, and plasma TV. And for convenience there is a ½ bath (sink and commode) off the great room. The final effect is elegant, yet casual.
The designer "chef's kitchen" is a grand scale "U-Shape" plan banked all the way around with cupboards and drawers. Appliances are high end stainless steel and include double ovens as well as a large refrigerator / freezer. Look up and see the kitchen has a unique open tent-shaped bead board ceiling highlighted with fans with carved wooden blades. Under foot, rich tiger hardwood floors span the entire length from the kitchen all the way through to the great room to integrate the common living spaces.
Great room furnishings are showcased against an unknown artist's mural backdrop. The old mural depicts historic Key West architecture and was considered a "treasure find" when old wood was ripped away by the construction crew. Once the builder decided it was historically correct to keep the mural as homage to the home, artist David Wegman was brought in to recondition and highlight the interesting elements of mural. Wegman was also consulted for the color scheme used throughout the renovation. Taking his cue from tropical landscape he chose rich colors of garden green, mango, and okra for the downstairs area.
Colors are also used to visually link the great room to the classic Victorian living room—complete with original working fireplace. Rich green walls capped with white crown molding lend a spice of tradition that complements the sash windows and colonial mantle lighting. Set up as a living room / den, this room has doors that make it private from the rest of the house. It is furnished with a comfortable sofa, coffee table, and beautiful selection of chairs lending it to be used as a private space for consultation or extra sleeping.
An additional unexpected feature of the downstairs of this home is a traditional screened in "Florida Room" off the back deck offering even more indoor / outdoor living space. Probably added sometime in the 1950's this screened in room provides added protection not found in the traditional portico.
The bedrooms are laid out well for maximum privacy. The first floor main bedroom is located toward the front of the house on the left as you face the home. This bedroom has an elegant designer ensuite bathroom that includes an artistically tiled shower with multiple shower jets. This room also has the added feature of a private exterior entrance leading to the front driveway as well as the bedroom door that leads to the front hall. It has a queen/full bed.
Back inside to the entrance hall, a beautiful staircase with original wood flooring leads to the 2nd floor. An original stained glass transom window bounces beautiful light throughout the stairwell and entrance area. Once upstairs we find two more bedrooms and bathrooms. Each bedroom has original restored hard pine floors and each has a private ensuite bathroom.
Facing the house, the upstairs bedroom on the right is the master bedroom. A viewing ladder poking through the ceiling leads to a unique private roof top deck. This room is painted a golden yellow, chosen to high light the original heart pine wood floors. The bathroom for this bedroom has a bath tub and elaborate tile work and wanes coating artistically done to highlight the original dormered ceiling.
Across the hall is the second upstairs bedroom. The original wooden walls of this room have been stripped of paint and varnished to celebrate the richness of the original heart pine. This spacious room is set up as a suite with a trundle bed (that can work as 2 twins or a king bed) and a sofa in the dormer window area. The bathroom has a custom tiled shower and is done in classic historic style with miniature black and white tile and wanes coating. The closet for this bedroom (as well as the other 2nd floor bedroom) still has the treasured original double French glass paned doors!
The location of this home is ideal. Tucked away behind mature landscaping that lines the quintessential white picket fence, this luxury historic home is located in the White Street Gallery section of Old Town Key West. It is within walking distance to all old town features yet close to the beach. An added feature is two off street parking spaces big enough for large cars.
The layout of this home makes it ideal for family groups or small groups of friends. This home is offered as an exclusive vacation rental. The property will not tolerate smoking inside. Only well behaved children are welcome. This property is not "child-proof". We do not accept guests less than 25 years of age unless accompanied by a family group or guardian.
