We love this place. Kayaking every day, watching the sunrise from the beach, hiking, snorkeling, winding down with a glass of wine on the dock. Fabulous. We could get used to this. Thank you for the Kaua'i hospitality. Your little hideaway is the best! Hope we can come back soon.

Candace,
Thank you for all of the things you supplied to help us enjoy Kauai. The travel books were a great help. The island is beautiful and we can understand why you are here. We hope to see you again.

Aloha Candace -
We have stayed in several places in Hawaii on this trip and, undoubtedly, we saved the BEST for last!!
Candace, your decorating skills show the epitome of "Hawaiiana" and your personal aloha spirit shines through!
Thank you again, for your kindnesses. Hopefully, we will see you again in September.

(This was our honeymoon trip and my husband & I promised each other that we would definitely come back to this island & this lovely cottage in a few years...maybe with a baby or two. :)
*Things to do on Kauai:
1. Kayaking along the Wailua River to the Secret Falls. Good workout.
2. Botanical Garden. RSVP a day before. Totally worth the $35.00
3. Beaches...Do I need to say more!
*Things that we should've done.
1. hiking trail to the Secret Fall requires a good pair of hiking shoes - or at least a pair of tennis shoes. Hiking in flip-flops is also doable but NOT recommended! :) (but we did in flip flops! Yeah-!)
2. Also on hiking to the Secret falls. Whatever you do, don't forget to cover yourself with mosquito repellent. We got 10 bites - per each limb. My husband got blisters all over is right arm :(
3. Avoid this restarant called "Noodle House." I couldn't even finish my third bite. Yikes!
We have fallen in love with this small yet exotic island and this cottage. Two thumbs way up!
Thank you Candace for making our honeymoon the best trip we've ever had!

Mahalo Candace -
We thoroughly enjoyed the "Hideaway" What a perfect little bungalow to spend our honeymoon. The highlights for us would be the cruise around the Na Pali Coast, the food - Coconuts was the favorite and we especially loved the Hanalei area - soo beautiful up there. We also agree that this location is fantastic - pretty central and easy to get from place to place. We truly appreciated the leis & fresh flowers, the condo still smells wonderful. You're a sweetheart and a great landlord. Although it was cloudy & rained quite a bit we absolutely Love it here and definitely plan to come back!
Until then - Love

Aloha Candy -
Mahalo, Candy! (I can call her that as we are cousins.) Mahalo for sending us postcards which helped to call us to Kauai.
We have many memories which will always be in our hearts. Prominent in them will be the moon shimmering on the river at night.
Kauai is small enough to feel right at home, but diverse enough to appeal to many life styles.
Our advice is to go and do when the sun shines. We had numerous days of rain which is unusual for this time of year.
Highlights = Ono: spending time with Candy, cruising the Na Pali Coast, Hanalei Beach and Sun breakfast (pancakes) at Tip Top Cafe in Lihue with the locals.

Ok - we had record rains, dam breaking, flooding, rain, rain, ya da ya da and yet I love it here - very tropical, warm every day, peaceful, beautiful. Got some reading done, good food, nice place to stay, warm welcome, Candace is a caring hostess!
Aloha, on to the "Big Island"

Candace, we enjoyed our week on Kauai very much. This is truly a hideaway - quiet & peaceful - just what we needed. The condo has many nice touches that we appreciated - the comfy bed, nice sheets and towels, ice for the cooler, all the little touches that made us feel at home, including the wonderful leis of welcome. My suggestion for the condo is a full length mirror, so we can assess the sunburn damage & see how ridiculous we look in our island wear! If the porch was screened in & mosquitoes not so bad, this would be perfect! Thank you so much - we're very glad we stayed here.

Email, 2/20/06:
The Wailua Riverside Hideaway definitely overachieved our high expectations! This home-away-from-home is exceptionally lovely: soft & inviting from the tasteful decorating hues down to the towels and toilet paper!
We enjoyed breakfasting on the rooftop deck amidst opical greenery and melodic birdsongs. The Wailua River - right across the cul-de-sac turnaround - invited us to delightful kayak adventures. We felt like stars in a jungle movie lazily paddling through the lush beautiful foliage. We kayaked and hiked to Secret Falls (with a quick refreshing dip in the pool!), the Fern Grotto, and explored upstream 'til it got too strong to paddle against.
Other favorite activities, so far:
. North island hike on Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Falls: beautiful, fun and challenging 8 miles.
. Caffe Coco in nearby Kapa'a - dinner in a grove with good music & food; laid-back, BYOB.
. Nearby hike on Kuamoa-Nounou Trail, a few miles to the top of Sleeping Giant for a great view.
. West island hike on Alakai Swamp Trail to Kilohana Vista: incredible views, unusual botanical environment, challenging, rather muddy, 10-miles.
. Waimea Canyon is beautiful!
. Snorkeling and swimming - Poipu area beaches are good this time of year; a sea turtle swam right up to me!
Candace, your place is wonderful, as you are, you're so friendly and thoughtful!

With all the beauty, nature and energy contained within the shores of Kauai, it cannot compare to you. We thank you for everything.
From the moment we departed the plane our eyes were trnsfixed on the beautiful landscape. While we were distracted and mesmerised, our wallets were being sucked dry. Then, we stumbled upon your doorstep and you removed the vacuum. Thanks for caring about us.
We moved around the island for 1 1/2 weeks before we arrived here and we finally go lei'd WOHOO !
Hope your trip to the Canary Islands is / was wonderful.

"The Hideaway"
In Kauai,
There's this little hideaway;
It's so lovely
That it makes you want to stay.
Up amongst the trees,
It feels like the perfect place'
Cool night breeze
Life lived at an island pace.
Go to the dock,
It's just a hop, skip and skidaddle;
Leave your tick-tock
It's time to go paddle.
The sun rises,
It's the start of a new day;
Cockle-doodle-do,
Life is great in the Hideaway.

What more can we really say;
Candace you're great,
We'll be back for another stay.

We can't say enough good things about this island and the Hide-a-way. We loved it all! You are a thoughtful and delightful hostess. We have been honored to get to know you! This was our first trip to Kauai - we know it won't be the last. We explored a lot - we did alot; but there is so much more to explore. Thank you for everything and best of luck in your new venture.

Mahalo Candace! Your Hideaway is so much better than the website shows! Special touches are much appreciated. Best of all: you! You being local can tell us where to go and when. Such a gracious hostess. Thank you!!
Your Riverside Hideaway is a super location - central to the island. We enjoyed kayak paddling on the river with flowers floating past. We explored daily bringing our lunch and returned "home" to BBQ dinner. The Huli Huli Chicken at Foodland lasted for a dinner and 2 lunches!! Cafe Coco had lovely atmosphere and is close. One evening we wandered around the Coconut Mall across from Cafe Coco sort of - one stand there sold Hawaiian CD's and played samples for us.
Thank you for providing all we needed for a memorable stay!

Mahalo Candace,
What a beautiful "piece of Heaven" you have here! We really appreciate your willingness to share it w/us.
Our favorite part here was being able to sit in the shade of the lanai & read all afternoon.
No one told us about the chickens on Kauai so I was quite surprised to hear a rooster crowing in the wee hours of our first morning here. I, being a country gal at heart, loved this wakeup call.
If my shoulder was well, I would have taken the kayak out everyday as this is truly one of the most beautiful rivers in the world!
This is truly a cozy, relaxed Hideaway & a memorable Christmas for us.
Sincerely,
Bill and Rita

What a wonderful vacation! We love Hawaii & WILL be back. Everything others have written in here (guestbook) is true. The Hideaway is great - we appreciate all the amenities - and you are a gracious hostess, Candace.
Thanks for letting us stay the extra few hours so our last day was not so rushed. We even took a nap in preparation for our long night flight back to "winter" and Kentucky.
I could live here so easily! The only reason I'm going back is to convince my children (especially the one with the only grandchild!) to more here too.

Candace, Mahalo Nui Loa :)
Your hospitality was as charming and beautiful as this island. Ruthie and I really enjoyed our stay here, especially waking up to the breeze and sunshine in the mornings.
As you know, we stayed very active during our visit. Our favorite place had to be old Koloa town and Poipu Beach for sunsets. Hiking to the base of Wailua Falls and swimming in it's pool was very memorable. I forgot to mention snorkeling at Poipu Beach...MAGICAL! Tell your future guests to bring lettuce to feed the fish. There will be hundreds of them! We love the humuhumunukunukuapua'a :)

Candace,
It's time to pack up everything and head to the cold "Ohio" weather. However, we take many great memories on our journey.
You have been the most gracious and thoughtful host imaginable. The "Garden Isle" has been our favorite island so far. We enyoyed each day to the max.
To all future guests, please take time to relax and see some of the most spectacular scenery and beaches in the world. There are too many to mention. All of the Kauai books on the shelf are of great help in decision making for each day.
Thank you, Candace, the "Hideaway" exceeded our expectations. You have a wonderful paradise here. Most of all we leave behind a friend, you, Candace

Thank you Candace for such a wonderful stay - such nice touches; Kona coffee, lotions & soaps, soft! towels, and KAYAK! We loved to hike to "not so" Secret Falls & even Fern Grotto was all for us!
Cafe Coco was perfect for dinner, lovely twinkle lights & live music.
We will be back & tell everyone to come to Wailua Riverside.

Dear Candace,
Our many thanks for your hospitality during our stay at your Wailua "hideout". We loved being "far from the madding crowd", yet close enough to Kapa'a to secure anything we might need. You've thought of everything! beach needs, kayak, snorkeling equipment - no need to rush out & buy or rent... The use of a washer, dryer, & all kitchen appliances make it "just like home".
I've always said, "I'm not a beach person" and then I came to beautiful Kauai! The North Shore is gorgeous: KE'E Beach & all the other "hideaway beaches" were FAB!
And, as a hostess, your are the best! Warm, thoughtful and gracious. Thanks for making our stay so memorable!

Candace - Many thanks for your lovely and warm hospitality...and thanks for remembering our missing third, Diane.
This hideaway was perfect, beyond what we expected. The decor and "extras" were so wonderful! We enjoyed the kayak trips so much, but didn't have enough time to do more. Our trip to KE'E Beach was well worth the drive. Lily loved the hike, and we both loved the snorkeling. Today, our last day here, we took a catamaran trip with HoloHolo Charters in Port Allen. Because of weather, we didn't get to see the "Forbidden" Island & Na Pali, but had a tremendous experience none the less - recommend it highly.
Kauai is a beautiful place with so much to offer. Thanks to Candace for providing us a home away from home...Take Care!

10/18/05 From the guestbook:
We were very lucky to have taken a big gamble on selecting this "Wailua Riversie" lodging from many on the internet - very lucky and very happy with its location. This is our first visit to Hawaii and we have had perfect weather - rain for 1/2 hour one day. Our first week was on the Big Island...
Here on Kauai we have hiked (our main goal) the first two miles of the Kalalua - Na Pali Trail - only three view points along the trail - very rough, rocky trail - hike only in dry weather - don't wear flip-flops, you need good shoes or boots. After hike, we walked east on KE'E Beach for Na Pali views - walk a long way for best views - beautiful, big beach, be sure to carry chicken food! Opinion on Na Pali hike: a lot of work for few views, but, I guess, it is a tourist "must" - Go, you decide!
Near our "Riverside Lodge" we hiked east-side trail to near top of Sleeping Giant - Nounu Trail - many views, good trail, go 200 yards beyond picnic shelter for more grand views - 1 1/4 hour up, 50 min. down!!
Near our lodge, walk 10 min. to beach for sunrises over the Pacific. Many beaches to north - favorites were "Secret Beach", not on all maps, just south of Kalihiwai Beach but no hwy signs, drive to dead-end on dirt road (1/2 mil from hwy) then steep descent on bad trail to magnificent, long beach. Also, Anini Beach Park (calm lagoon w/reef) great swimming & snorkeling, showers, etc, long beach.
Candace, your place here is PERFECT - central location to rest of island - wonderful accommodations and Lanai!! Again, the perfect place for a vacation - truly wonderful!

08/27/05 From the guestbook:
Mahalo Candace for the lovely & relaxing place to stay here on beautiful Kauai. Your "hideaway" is so well-appointed & comfortable. We especially enjoyed the kayak & our excursions up the river to the Fern Grotto & Secret Falls. We're not sure if we actually found the falls or not. We were expecting a big waterfall - but the trail seemed to end at a small pool & very small cascades, so we assumed that was it. Anyway, we're telling ourselves we saw the Secret Falls until we learn otherwise. Again thanks so much for your hospitality. The mangoes are wonderful! Hope you enjoy your stay at our place in Arizona.

This is our 3rd time to this beautiful island. We have seen and done everything we wanted to see and do the first two times. This trip was to just relax. And that we did! Of course we did a couple of things we loved to do - kayak & snorkel, but much of our time was spent reading, sleeping and enjoying our breakfast and dinner on the lanai. Oh and sitting by the river and swimming in the river and...well, I guess we did a lot more than laying around. But we thoroughly enjoyed it all. To Candace we say thanks for your hospitality and a truly warm Aloha welcome! As JW's we enjoyed our association with the borther's and sisters of Kapaa and joining them in field service was a highlight. We will remember this trip forever!

We left our steps on the sand at the Polihale Beach. Our eyes were delighted at Na 'Aina Kai and McBryde Botanical Gardens.
Our taste buds enjoyed the curries and the black rice with coconut milk from "The King and I" and the smoothie from Banana Joe.

The Averys, Deirdre and Barbara, throughly enjoyed our experience on Kauai.
Thanks to Candace for a wonderful welcome to Wailua Riverside. We loved the kayak trip to Secret Falls. Having towels, chairs, snorkel equipment available was so thoughtful and convenient.
We loved Tunnels Beach for snorkeling, Anini Beach for watching wind and kite surfers, KE'E Beach for swimming and snorkeling. On the South side, Salt Pond Beach was our favorite. A monk seal left the surf to be on the beach close by.
Polynesia Cafe was good for lunch, Cafe Portofino great for dinner and Gaylord's was lovely.
Our flight back to Arizona is today and we don't want to go!
July 4 to 10, 2005
Aloha Candace,
Ron and I very much enjoyed our stay here at the Hideaway. It was the perfect place for us to kick back, relax and enjoy the Hawaiian lifestyle. Kauai was the third stop on our honeymoon - and was by far our favorite. The kayak trip to the Secret falls was beautiful. Swimming in the falls was refreshing - an experience that Ron & I will always remember. Everything about this island was beautiful - the lush green landscape, the beautiful beaches and the people that we've met...I can't wait to come back!
You have a wonderful place - a small piece of heaven.

What a treasure we have found in your beautiful Hideaway on the Wailua River! And what a treasure you are as well! When I spoke with you on the phone, I felt you had been a friend for all my life, such was your warm and joyful personality. And when we arrived - Wow! What a welcome of Aloha! Your place is beautiful with everything we could have needed or wanted. We made a good use of your kayak, which was an added bonus, the basket of mangoes you left on our doorstep were eaten with relish, and we took your advice on the Fresh Fish Express. Greg fixed grilled (& marinated) Mahi-Mahi last night with a fire-roasted beurre blanc - Yum! Mahalo many times over!

May 24 to 28, 2005, from the guestbook:
We have spent the last 2 weeks exploring Kauai on our Honeymoon. Our final 4 day stop here we were warmly greeted by Candace and immediatley felt at home. We kayaked up the river and discovered a Hawaiian village with peacocks wandering about.... The central location of Candace's Hideaway allowed us to return to our favorite spots and discover others. We wish we had stayed here first but are so glad we ended our journey in such a cozy cottage. Our last night we went across the river to Smith's Tropical Paradise to a farewell Luau. We highly recommend this event to all who read: good food, great show, wandering around the lush garden was a delight!
So now we are very sad to leave this magical island but take with us memories that will last the rest of our lives. One day we know we will return. It was such an adventure to explore, snorkel, hike in the jungle. Our favorite beach was Pali Hale on the north east, oops, west coast at the very edge of the Na Pali coast, big waves, wide open beach. It was at this spot on the farthest shore we ran into some friends from back home! Can you believe that?
Thank you Candace for everything! Your warm welcome will not soon be forgotten!
Enjoy everyone!

Aloha Candace,
Mahalo for being such an inviting and sweet person. Your Wailua hideaway was better than expected. My mother and husband along with myself had a spectacular time here in Kauai. This trip being our (my husband & I) second trip to Kauai was even better! The "Ultimate Guide to Kauai" you left for guests' use has been such a handy guide. We were here for a wedding but we squeezed in alot of exciting activities!
Our FAVORITE and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED adventure was the hike to Secret Beach up North and then another hike from the beach to the Secret Lava Pools. Most phenomenal experience ever. Not to mention further up past the big lava wall there is a waterfall opening into the ocean that you can rinse off too! Just amazing, we will have to do that again for sure! Remember locals do not like to share location - it's a secret! shhh!
Plenty of awesome places to snorkel. Water has been very angry so the best area we snorkeled was Lydgate park. How convenient! :)
We also went on a very steep hike through trails that were marked dangerous and not maintained to the bottom of the Wailua Falls. After experiencing that and then hiking back up to see the falls from above, it could not compare! We all swam at the bottom of the Falls and walked behind it! A little chilly but well worth it!!!
Lastly we swam in the wet cave which has a fresh body of water in it - it was a little freaky but just an amazing experience. A MUST DO ! ! ! This is also up North near KE'E Beach!
I could go on, but it will probably take up the whole book! :)
Kauai was or rather is a fantasy island. There are more adventures that we'd like to take and will definitely love to come back here again!
Candace, thanks for your kindness! It was very interesting speaking with you and we all wish you all the best! You are an inspiration!
P.S. Thanks for the computer!
Much Love,

Aloha Candace,
Thank you for renting this beautiful treehouse hideaway to our family of three. We are so happy we chose this place to stay and vacation. We love the central location and access to your kayak on the Wailua River! This place is truly beautifully decorated 'Hawaiian Style'. We felt right at home here with all the amenities you provided! We are so thankful to visit this beautiful, aromatic, colorful island. Our favorite place to visit was Hanalei Beach. It was very quiet and relaxing. We even got to swim next to a sea turtle! All sides of this Island have something to offer. We will definitely be back to Kauai for vacation. Candace, one again, a big Mahalo to you for your big warm smile and generosity. We enjoyed meeting you and hope to see you again.
One Love,

Dear Candace,
Grant and I had an incredible time on Kauai and the "Hideaway" made it extra special. We couldn't have picked a more magical place then this to get married and honeymoon on.
We traveled as far North as the road would take us and as far west as the dirt road allowed. There were so many highlights on this trip but the two that top the list were Polihale on the west side, 17 miles of beach with barely anyone else around, and the hike up to Mount Wai'ale'ale, again not too many people around. Kayaking up the Wailua River and hiking to Secret Falls was also an amazing experience. Everything on this Island just bombarded your senses, all the tropical greening and flowers, the Plumeriea in particular, the birds singing every morning, even the sound of rain in the middle of the nights.
Some sights we enjoyed were the Kilauea Lighthouse and watching all the birds, snorkeling at Tunnels Beach and then stopping off at Hanalei Mixed Plate for a delicious lunch/dinner.
Poipu Beach was great for swimming and we even saw some Dolphins out by the rocks to the left. Another great beach on the Southside was Maha'ulepu. You have to drive along a dirt road with potholes to get there but well worth it.
On the West Side I highly recommend driving out to Polihale again a dirt road with potholes but once you arrive you'll be glad you made the journey. Definitely stop in at Jo Jo's for a shave ice. The shave ice was delicious and the experience of being in that shop was entertaining to say the least!
The Waimea Canyon was an incredible sight as was the Kalalau Valley, definitely go to the Pu'o O Kila Lookout to view the Valley. If the road is closed, walk in for a mile, the view is definitely worth it.
One of our favorite things to do at the end of the day was head down to the dock and enjoy twilight down there. It is incredibly relaxing and your eyes just can't get enough of all the beauty that surrounds you.
Mahalo Candace!

After saving for a couple of years, my wife, 18 mo daughter and I celebrated our honeymoon - 3ish yrs after the fact. Kauai is great for relaxing and visiting beauty. Beaches, plant life, surf & air were all GREAT. Some things we enjoyed were the Allerton, McBryde and Lumahuli Gardens - (a must do if you're into plants & landscaping), the kayaking, the sea turtles at Poipu, bird watching at Kilauea Lighthouse and driving around the island. Candace is really endearing and made us feel welcome. The baby enjoyed walking on the beach, but was unsure about the water!! Jim
I agree with my husband that the Beauty of Kauai is awesome. Sierra enjoyed greeting all the "visitors" to the sights ("Hi" is definitely her favorite word) & found herself engrossed in all the wildlife (chickens included!) The best for me was seeing the sea turtles at Poipu. There were over a dozen swimming off the rocks near Embassy Suites Resort, close to shipwreck Beach. Allerton Gardens was also amazing!! Teal
Can't wait to come back to finish visiting more sights!! Thanks Candace!!

Aloha Friends -
I am convinced that the Spirit of Aloha lives here at Wailua Riverside "the Hideaway"! Candace is the most giving and gracious of hosts, but it is she that gives this spot the sense of being special. Mahalo for that, Candace.
We came here with great plans of doing this, that, and the other - but found ourselves quickly lulled by the Hawaiian lifestyle. It became easy to just kick back and enjoy. We enjoyed a different beach most days (don't miss "glass beach" - it's easy to ignore but worth some beach combing). We enjoyed kayaking the river, but just lazed our way up river. We enjoyed "dock sitting", walking at Lydgate, and traveling to the North Shore (ahh, the beaches).
Get to know Kauai and get to know Candace - what a treat.
Again, Mahalo -

Candace's place is just great. We originally booked our 4 days at a local hotel but changed our minds the last minute - Good Decision! The place is very clean, and just perfect for a couple or small family. Thanks Candace for the great Welcome - Take Care! (Wayne)
We're the Arndt's from Minnesota - Wayne & Ruth. Our 3rd trip to Hawaii fist time to Kauai. Wayne plans, researches and books the trips, I just follow along. We often golf on our trip, but decided to just lay back & relax, read and enjoy the scenery and the beaches. (Ruth)

Our holiday has been even better than we could have hoped for because of your lovely personality and your encouragement to enjoy this beautiful island.

Candace,
Thanks so much for the lovely accommodations. Coming back via Lihue/Honolulu and seeing all the other tourists, I thought we probably had a much different experience of Hawaii/Kauai then they - as we did not see any of them hiking/diving/etc!
You have a wonderful home, and we will let you know the next time we visit.

Aloha Candace,
We really enjoyed our stay at your cute & comfortable home. The hula decor and the tropical feel were really nice. My family of four had ample room and never felt crowded. The extra little touches made it extra nice. One of our favorite things was kayaking down the river. We chose your home because of the central location and also the use of the kayak. We have stayed on Kauai before and have never stayed at such a lovely place as yours. We will surely return to Kauai and stay here again.

"We so enjoyed your beautiful home on the Wailua River. The kayak/hike to the Secret Falls was a high point of our visit. The Wailua location was so central, we easily did activities on the north and west shores. We were very happy with our stay here."

"We're here on vacation, celebrating our 19th Anniversary a little late or our 20th a little early. Leaving our four children at home, we came to rest and relax. Candace is a lovely hostess, and taking the kayak up the river has been our favorite activity. We took it out fairly early and enjoyed the Fern Grotto between tour groups; it was magnificent having it completely to ourselves...We've treasured our ten days here, and we do hope we can return! I think we'd do more relaxing...lie on the beaches more and simply kick back."
