California's Amazing History
California has a rich history of travel, but an even richer history of discovery and conquest.
The name California comes from a book written in 1510, in which there is a mythical island paradise of the same name, filled with gold, pearls, and exotic beasts.
Spanish settlers and missionaries accepted this name for the region of the United States we know as the state of California in the beginning of the 19th century.
This name is a fitting tribute to the vast, robust region that is modern California.
Throughout recent history, there has been much fighting over the land of California.
Spanish settlers attempted to conquer the region in the early 1500's, but encountered resistance from the Native Americans living on the land.
This resistance would last for centuries, and remnants of that struggle can still be found today.
Over the course of the next three centuries, Russian flags and Mexican flags also flew over parts of California, as people laid claim to and battled over the land.
Eventually, California would become an integral part of the United States.
In 1848, the US gained control of the Western territory that included California.
It was this same year that American settlers in the state discovered something of great value that allowed the state to live up to its original name.
In 1848, gold was discovered in California.
In 1849, the gold rush began, bringing thousands of Americans and others across the land and across the sea in search of the abundant gold.
Shortly thereafter, in 1850, California was named the 31st state in the Union.
As the gold rush brought more and more people to the region, the gold began to disappear, but many of the people did not.
Settlers discovered a place deserving of recognition and awe, not only for its gold, but for its beauty.
Today, it's not gold that makes California rich, but real estate, agriculture, and of course, travel.
