Less than 200 miles from the Florida coast, the Abaco Islands are the hidden jewels of The Bahamas. Here, vacationers enjoy legendary fishing and spectacular diving and snorkeling year round. Boaters cruise the 100 mile long Sea of Abaco protected from the Atlantic by reefs and barrier islands. The Abacos are uncrowded and unspoiled with no high rises or gambling. It is a very casual, laid-back, relaxed atmosphere and perfect for vacation getaways and longer stays. The dress is casual and the lifestyle is friendly.
Most visitors to the Abacos arrive by air in Marsh Harbour. A short cab ride from the airport takes you to the harbor where you can catch a ferry (4 trips per day) or rent a boat for the nine mile ride to Guana Cay.
Seven mile long Great Guana Cay has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas. Its settlement at the harbor's edge is an equally charming village of colorful Bahamiam homes and island shops. Fisherman clean their daily catch on nearby docks while locals sit and converse under their famous fig tree.
Island-hopping is a popular activity. The various cays are about 10-40 minutes apart. Each is unique with a character all its own. You must see them all. There are numerous deserted cays, coves, beaches, creeks and bays, just waiting for you to relax and explore in your runabout.
Beautiful sunny days are the norm any time of the year. Average high temperatures range between 70-75 degrees from December to May and 80-85 degrees the rest of the year.

Diving & Snorkeling The water is what the Abacos are all about. This may be the best place in the world for diving and snorkeling. Most of the year the water temperature is in the 80's and clarity can better than 150 ft. The Abacos have the third largest barrier reef in the world and within swimming distance from the beach in several places. Dive Guana can arrange everything from beginner lessons and dive trips to SCUBA certification.
Explore the Island Guana Cay is seven miles long, covered in foliage and surrounded by beaches. The best way to see the island is by golf cart. Donna Sands Golf cart rentals has a large fleet of well maintained golf carts available for daily or weekly rental. Bicycle rentals are also available from Dive Guana.
Fishing Wether it's deep sea, light tackle off the dock, bone fishing in the flats, diving for conch or spearing lobster, fishing is great in Abaco. Charters are always available on Guana Cay. Contact Edmund Pinder or Henry Sands. for half of full day guided trips. If on your own, remember to read up on fishing regulations, they are strictly enforced.
Boating The best way to see the Abacos is by boat. The Sea of Abaco is a favorite of cruisers. Wether fishing, following the dolphins or exploring uninhabited islands a boat always seems to take the vaction to another level of enjoyment. If you visit in Spring or Summer, be sure to make a boat reservation early.
Dining Out Guana Cay offers different styles of dining. The new Docksiders Grill overlooking Fishers Bay, Grabbers on Sunset Beach, Orchid Bay Marina in Setlement Harbour and world famous Nipper's Beach Bar and Grill on the Atlantic. |
