Property Information
WHISPERING PINES is a contemporary house of airy octagonal rooms grouped around an open, central great room, in the renowned Teton Pines development. Its tiered, rounded roofs echo the mountaintops; its broad stone chimneys seem to hold up the Wyoming sky. A thick border of fir, pine and aspen screens Whispering Pines from its neighbors, while the view in front is wide open to the pastures and foothills beyond. Inside, all is windows; sky-high plates of glass flaunt the magnificent view and let the varied beauty of the changing seasons inside— a world of falling snow, or a carpet woven of wildflowers and waving grasses beneath the towering Tetons. The comfort and rich textures within speak of the landscape as well: high stone hearths, polished wood, smooth brown leather, velvets soft and plush as moss.
The two-storey great room is ringed with windows so vast that the long, butterscotch velvet couches facing each other across a table seem as if they’re outside on the lawn. A stone fireplace rises up through the vaulted, 26' cedar ceiling. A small wet bar is a step up from the living room, as is the sound-proof media room—where a big couch and a wide-screen TV wait—but the nightly show takes place in the great room, where the sun sets inside the tall windows as if scripted, flooding the voluminous space with rose-colored light.
The living room fireplace has two sides; its reverse warms an octagonal study lined with bookshelves and built-in cabinets that follow the curve of the walls. An imposing granite desk provides ample workspace, and a wonderful leather chair with a small table attached to one arm sits beside the hearth, for fireside work or reading. The study has a door to the deck and hot tub.
The dining room and kitchen share a space divided by a stone-topped bar. A single, traditional pendant light hangs over the circular dining table from the peak of the vaulted ceiling. The views from the dining room windows arc up to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, the gondola’s destination. The gourmet kitchen is outfitted in natural pine cabinets and gray-green granite countertops, and has its own merry little fireplace. A gas range is set in a center island, while double ovens stand opposite; and a piano sits in a windowed alcove just off the kitchen. Perfect for dinner parties and family gatherings, Whispering Pines’ open hospitable spaces encourage flow and conversation. When the weather is fine, the picnic table on the wide green lawn offers another spot to hold meals or festivities; or take cocktails out to the terrace—accessed easily from living room, study, master bedroom or kitchen.
Whispering Pines’ rounded, high-ceilinged master suite is on the first floor, with a stone gas fireplace, double walk-in closets, and a whirlpool and steam room in the private bath. The master suite is walled in windows, and has a door to the deck and hot tub. Heated stone and hickory floors throughout the house invite bare feet while air conditioning keeps the rooms the perfect temperature.
A separate stairway leads to Whispering Pines’ large, newly constructed guest wing. Here are two more bedrooms—simple, peaceful, comfortable —and a family room, where a flat-screen TV is hidden inside paneling over the fireplace, and doors open to the terrace. Thick wool carpeting cushions the bedroom floors, the walls are painted a restful buttercream. Each bedroom has a luxurious bathroom tiled in travertine marble, with a glass-walled shower and bronze fixtures.
From the foyer, a grand staircase climbs to the second story bridge, which spans the great room on its way to two upstairs guest rooms—one with a quilted queen bed and two bunk beds, perfect for children or teens; the other private, cheerful and sunny, with a great vaulted ceiling and a queen size sleigh bed. Double glass doors open to the balcony and a spreading panorama of pasture, mountains and sky. Both second floor bedrooms have private baths.
A wood-and-stone terrace, 1,000 square feet in all, wraps around the house, with wide bays that extend over the lawn and hold outdoor seating and dining areas and a six-person hot tub. A big backyard, edged with trees, is at the rear of the property; and all around are quiet pine woods and grassy ranch lands. Horses graze in the pastures, and elk, moose, fox, eagles and coyotes frequently wander by—for this is Wyoming, after all. The house is well-equipped to handle the gear and laundry resultant to any kind of outdoor adventure: between the three-car garage and the kitchen is a powder room, a mud room with shelves and cubbies and a stone-floored laundry room with washer, dryer and a deep sink.
Whispering Pines’ location in The Pines gives it access to superb golf, tennis, swimming, restaurants and miles upon miles of hiking, biking, snowshoe and ski trails. There are ponds and streams to fish in, and the rolling Teton Pines golf course becomes a fantastic cross-country ski touring center in winter. The Pines has a little village center – with a market, a dry cleaners and a flower shop, among other attractions—that is just a quick bike ride from the house on a safe, paved road. But perhaps best of all, Whispering Pines is only six miles from Teton Village and Jackson Hole’s famed, epic ski slopes—but offers space, peace and privacy that can’t be found within the village. The entrance to Grand Teton National Park is a mere ten minutes from Whispering Pines’ driveway. Whispering Pines is a gracious, welcoming, and luxurious house, an inspiring home base for discovering the great wonderland of Jackson Hole.
