Property Information

The cottage is tucked in the woods just off the Cabot Trail at Wreck Cove on Cape Breton Island. You will sleep right on the "Cabot Trail" in the shadow of the Cape Breton Highlands. We're located on a 29 acre oceanfront lot with our own walking trails to the Highlands and the Sea.

The Cottage is a fully equipped 'home away from home', suitable for a 1 day or a month stay, complete with all the creature comforts, from linens and cleaning supplies to microwaves, coffeemakers, electric stoves and fridges , to 4 piece bath, electric heat and fans and wood stove type fireplace, (firewood is supplied free). From your veranda, you can hike to the mountains or the sea, cross country ski, beach comb, snowshoe, skidoo and enjoy our great outdoors.We are centrally located for the scenery and activities that people love to do and see on Cape Breton Island. Your host, Mike, runs fun 1/2 and full day sea kayak tours out of South Harbour Ingonish and guests get a 20% discount. No Smoking. Pets are permitted,(please note pets when booking). Handicap accessible.

The Cabin sleeps 6 people in double beds and sometimes a foam mattress can make a nest for kids or extra guests in one of the bedrooms.

Property Activities

The Cottage is tucked in the Woods on the Cabot Trail and is very close to all the activities that people love to do here on Cape Breton Island. The Cabot Trail is one of the most beautiful places on earth and has all the amenities that visitors from all over the world love so much.

Sea kayak and snowshoe tours, campfires

First spend a nice relaxing day right here on the property moving into your cabin and roaming the trails of our 30 acre Oceanside property, beachcomb a bit and relax by the shore.

Spend a leisurely day driving the Cabot Trail to Meat Cove (the garrisons from Fortress Louisbourg would go there to hunt moose and caribou for their winters meat), you'll probably sleep in anyway, so have a nice relaxing breakfast and then start driving north, stopping every now and then to enjoy a lookoff or a short walk. Plan for lunch in Neils Harbour at the Sea View or the Chowder house real good local seafood). Continue along that scenic route until you come to the road down to White Point, drive right down and leave your car at a little pull off place about 100 meters past the wharf, parking there keeps you out of the way of the fishermen. Now walk out the trail in front of you, right out to the tip of White Point. When you get out near the end you will see a small graveyard, it's where shipwrecked sailors are buried, the little knoll there is a great place to sit and think about absolutely nothing at all. Walk back to the car and continue on north to Meat Cove (remember to veer right at Cape North) Where the Campground is, is the most northerly settlement in Nova Scotia, have a look at that outermost campsite. Now jump in the car and head back South about 15 K to Cabot Landing, spend as much time as you can strolling along this spectacular beach with it's million dollar view of the mountains, have a picnic there or stop at any of the neat little restaurants on the way back to the cabins.

Take a morning or full day Sea kayaking tour with Cape Breton Seacoast adventures based right here (20% discount for our guests) when the tour comes in have a nice relaxing meal at the wonderful little Takeout right across the street called the Muddy Rudder {good food, and lots of it, at low prices}. If it's running, take the chair lift to the top of the mountain at Ski Cape Smokey and when you come down, drive over to Ingonish and laze on the salt or fresh water beach, or take a walk out to middle Head. Now go splurge and have a Lobster Supper or buy some and bring em back to the cabin or the beach nearby and cook-em-up.

When you get up, if you have bikes, take a nice ride North to Smokey Mountain and then peddle all the way up it, come on you can do it, if your bikes are mountain bikes turn left at the summit and go up the road by the pit to the "real" summit, and when you get there go right up to the tower on your right, for a super wrap around view. If your bikes are more street type, turn right and go out to the picnic park, if you can sit there for a half hour or so, you will leave any problems that are vexing your soul there when you head back down the mountain, it's OK they'll just blow off out into sea. The Trip back to the Cabins is almost all down hill. Go grab one of those lobster sandwiches over at the Wreck Cove General Store and kick your feet up for an hour or two. In the afternoon head south on yer bikes and about 10K down the Cabot Trail is the road down to Little River Shore, (only Paved Road that goes off to the left) Here you'll find a working fishing village where the fishermen catch those delicious lobster. There's also a nice little museum that shows a bit of the history of fishing in our area. If you go over just South of the breakwater you will find a cozy little beach, just great to catch some rays, or have a NickNick (what my oldest daughter used to call a picnic) If you don't feel like cooking supper when you get back then turn left when you drive back to the Cabot Trail and go about 5K South to the Clucking Hen, if your staying for a few days with us at the cabins you will be returning here lots, not only for the food but to take home their scrumptious baked stuff. In the evening take a drive up into the Highlands on the Wreck Cove Road, almost directly across from the entrance to the cabins. You can watch the sunset over the highland lakes or drive out to Surge Lake for another ocean viewscape.

Get up bright and early today (somewhere between 9 and 10 A.M.) and pack a nice big lunch and cold drinks and take a hike up Wreck Cove River Valley, past the huge sugar maple bush to the very top of this magnificent mountain valley then follow the dirt road along Wreck Cove Lake and back out to Surge lake, now along the dams to the very edge of the escarpment, if you walk out to the tower you will be looking out over your Cabins almost 1100 feet below, and on to Bird Islands, and the grand old North Atlantic beyond. Again you saved the best for last, there's a lovely trail heading back down to the Cabins ***Note when you come back out the road from the tower, don't go up that little road to the dam but veer left and down the path. When you get back cook up lots of Kraft Dinner relax and kick your feet up in front of the TV or the Campfire ��you've earned your rest.

Although you are sleeping right in the shadow of the Cape Breton Highlands, you are surprisingly close to a lot of attractions around Cape Breton Island. It's only just over an hour drive to Sydney to do some shopping or drop a few loonies into the old slot machines at the Sheriton Casino (who knows you might hit the jackpot and win enough to pay for your trip). You may want to go for a tour of an old time coal mine where you'll get to talk with the some of the original miners who do the tours, or you might want to head directly for the Fortress of Louisbourg, You should allow about 4-5 hours for this tour, (this is the largest historical reconstruction in North America). Have Dinner or Supper at the Fortress but don't expect "Haute Cuisine" because the food is exactly the same as it was in 1748. Buy some bread from the bakery it's really made from scratch and I'll bet it doesn't make it home in one piece, oh and by the way don't drop it on your foot, I'm not saying it's hefty but it could involve broken bones. The Grub Stake in Louisbourg (town) has real good food or try the Peking Restaurant on Charlotte St. in Sydney (authentic Chinese food). Then check and see if there's any concerts or activities down on the boardwalk. Come on home then, and have a real good sleep, g'night.

If you enjoy trout fishing get up real early in the morning and head up the Wreck Cove Road to the Highland lakes that make up the water supply for the Wreck Cove Hydro Project , here you'll find some of the best trout fishing in Nova Scotia and no bugs, ah... just kidding about the bugs but a little DEET will take care of that, if you bribe Mike with food he might tell you where his spots are. For some real fun fishing head down to the Ferry at Englishtown and try out some of those big heavy lures and catch some mackerel , fillet them right down there and when you fry up those fillets and have them for supper you-will- have-lived. If you sleep in (later than 6 AM) then take a drive up to Ingonish and plan for a Whale watching adventure on one of those sturdy Atlantic fishing boats or see Whales by Sail with Sea Visions. In the afternoon enjoy the sights and attractions of Ingonish Beach or take a nice hike up Franey or along the Clyburn Trail, way back up to where the old gold mine was.
