Property Information |

Move over George, Napoleon napped here first. Villa Bonaparte, a former
hunting lodge of the royal house of Savoy, sits astride two of Italy’s finest
wine regions: Barolo and Asti.
This stately villa, rising four stories above two acres of its own botanical
gardens, opens a portal into Italy’s noble past. The present owner, who
has slowly been restoring Villa Bonaparte to its original glory, lives on the
first floor with her dog and shares the garden and laundry room. The
swimming pool is exclusively for the use of our guests.
The villa offers two living rooms and three dining rooms furnished with
period antiques. A Murano chandelier, tapestries and paintings adorn the
main living room. All of the bedrooms have at least one screened window
and a minifridge.
With the exception of the master bedroom, where Napoleon stayed while
signing an armistice in nearby Cherasco, the remaining bedrooms are
furnished in a simpler, contemporary style. Firewood for the villa’s five
fireplaces, one being lavishly found in a bathroom, is included in the
price. Maid service and meals on certain days may be requested when
booking. The owner generously offers a welcome buffet upon arrival. For
those who come shackled to their laptop, an Internet connection is
available.
Wine lovers please take note that the Nebbiolo grape cultivated in this
area yields DOCG Barolo. Italy’s intensely flavored king of wine is aged
three full years. Barbaresco, another DOCG label from this area is aged
two years. Other remarkable wines from this region include Barbera, Asti
and Dolcetto.
Bra, a mile away, has a supermarket, restaurants and trains on the Asti to
Torino line. Before you go gallivanting across Piedmont, explore Bra itself.
Richly garbed in Baroque architecture, this is where the Slow Food
movement was born. Bra is also the site of the Craveri Museum of Natural
Science and the home of the Museo Archeologico with treasures from
Pollenzo, a 2000 year old settlement, just 15 minutes away. At this site,
the foundations of a Roman era amphitheatre may be admired first hand.
If the above isn’t enough, Bra is renowned for its soft gourmet cheeses
and pure veal sausage. The Friday morning market in Piazza XX
Settembre is a salivating experience.
Villa Bonaparte is ideally positioned for touring the wine, food and castle
routes of Piedmont. Cherasco, a 10 minute drive away is another
architectural and culinary jewel that hosts its market day on Thursday; the
Marene entrance to the A6 or the truffle capital of Alba: 15; Barolo: 25;
Asti, Torino or Cuneo: 60; the spas of Acqui Terme: 80; Genova: 90;
Milan: 100; San Remo: 120.
