Vacationing in southern Piedmont is a magnificent way to capture the
essence of Italy’s dolce vita. In an hour, you can lie on the sunny shores
of the Italian Riviera, yet wake up each day cradled by soft wooded hills,
fairy tale castles and tantalizing vineyards.
This incredible area, known as Gavi, offers more than refreshing white
wine. But if wine is part of your quest, the friendly owners of Casa Castelli
look forward to introducing you to privately owned castle wineries. Many
are not generally open to the public.
This charming country home is made up of two period structures within a
tiny rural hamlet. The main house is attached on one side to another
home. The independent suite, 15 feet away, is attached to a cottage that
is occasionally occupied by the owners and their dog.
When in residence, the pool and grounds are shared with the owners. For
dining al fresco, the entry to the home has a covered, furnished portico
for our guests.
A wood burning stove, terracotta floors and cozy furnishings create a
relaxed country setting. A narrow, wooden stairway leads to the upper
floor, where each bedroom has at least one screened window. Maid
service and dinners may be requested when booking. The owners can
also arrange for horseback riding at a neighboring farm.
The route home ends on one mile of unpaved, country road passing by
the villa and vineyards of Ornella Muti, a famous Italian actress. This is a
land of castles and vineyards made for lovers of scenic walks, yet within a
10 minute drive are the tiny hill towns of Lerma, Montaldeo and
Castelleto d’Orba.
Gavi’s castle is a 20 minute drive away; Novi Ligure’s fancy chocolates:
25; the fedoras of Alessandria, the spas of Acqui Terme or the Roman
ruins at Serravalle Scrívia: 40; Ponente Riviera: 50; Genova or Asti: 60;
Milan or Alba: 70; Turin: 100; Pisa or San Remo: 120.

Ground floor: Living/dining room with wood stove, TV and CD player.
Kitchen with stove top, oven, fridge, dishwasher and door to a furnished,
covered portico. One bathroom with shower. Utility room with washing
machine.
First floor: Two bedrooms each with a queen size bed and en suite
bathroom with shower. One bedroom with two single, joinable beds.
Independent suite: External entrance into sitting area. One bedroom with
a queen size bed and en suite bathroom with shower.

Shopping and dining: Within a 10 minute drive are a couple of small
villages such as Lerma with a restaurant or Casaleggio Boiro with a
market. More dining and shopping options are in Gavi or Ovada, a 20
minute drive in either direction.
Not To Be Missed: A visit to one of the nearby castles for a tour and visit
of their vineyards. These castles are privately owned and not open to the
public; however, the owners of Casa Castelli can arrange these visits. In
Novi Ligure be sure to visit the confectionary shops as this town is known
for its chocolates.
Horseback Riding: The neighboring estate, less than a 10 minute walk
next door, offers riding and the owners of Casa Castelli can make
arrangements.
Golf: Club Villa Carolina Golf Club, an 18 hole course is within a 15
minute drive. Closed December - February and on Wednesdays.
Beach: Within a 45 minute drive, the town of Arenzano along the Italian
Riviera has a pebbly beach with a beach club (pay for use) and a free use
section.
Special Events: Antique markets are found throughout the area and take
place on the 1st Sunday of the month in Alessandria and the 4th Saturday
of the month in Novi Ligure with the exception of August.
Open Air Markets: On Monday in Alessandria, on Tuesday in Novi Ligure
and on Wednesay in Ovada.
