Somewhere between heaven and the Mediterranean and midway between
Sorrento and Positano, Villa Arcangeli offers absolute privacy and
sweeping sea views from every angle.
Built into a rocky cliff 750 feet above the sea, it requires an angel or at
least a helicopter to get a picture of this place. The Angels were busy that
day, beating the Red Sox, so we got the chopper.
Guests without wings need good feet. The walk from the parking area is
along a 70 yard, stone path that includes about 75 scattered steps to the
entrance. Villa Arcangeli is on four levels, so there are more steps inside.
Luggage fares better than people—a small cable car shuttles bags to and
from the villa.
The grounds are filled with terraces carved into the rocky cliff. Tropical
plants and fig trees are everywhere including some inside as well. There
is an outdoor kitchen with a grill and a pizza oven, a terrace with a bar, a
utility room with a washing machine and a small inviting pool with an
outdoor shower.
Comfortable furnishings evoke a simple nautical theme. The sensation is
akin to being aboard an ocean liner. Levels three and four are air
conditioned. Two out of the four bedrooms have window screens, and
every room is backed by stone and faces the sea. A maid, a cook or a
pizza making class may be arranged when booking.
Children under the age of 10 are not allowed, and anyone with less than
perfect mobility should consider another property.
From Villa Arcangeli, it’s possible to climb down 60 steps to a restaurant
below the house. This seaside establishment with amazing views is
known for being one of the best in the region, and is open from April to
October.The road to the villa is paved and winding. The last half mile is a
cliff hugger. However, Positano is only a 15 minute drive away; Sorrento:
20; Amalfi: 30; Ravello or the entrance to the A3 at Castellamare: 40;
Pompeii or Herculaneum: 50; Naples: 120; and about four hours to Rome.

A path spanning over 200 yards leads to another furnished, sea view
