Spittal Pond is a south shore park on the way to John Smith’s Bay that features a salt-water marsh and a spectacular section of the rugged rocky coastline. Here one can see the inscriptions of the date 1543 carved in stone at Spanish Rock. Hiking is enjoyable at Ferry Reach and St. David’s Head, two of the larger and more interesting parks and the spectacular new Cooper’s Island Park, just past the airport and Clearwater Beach is a 77 acre picnickers delight- with a cascade of beaches and secret coves most locals let alone tourists have never seen. Consult your detailed Bermuda map, available at Bermuda Bookstores for $4.95 for clearly marked areas and the best road instructions for fascinating out of the way lanes and side roads. Swimming and snorkelling are good on most beaches. However, Shelly Bay Beach (10 minutes away) is very safe, never has an undertow (as do many of the more turbulent South Shore beaches) and the caves around the headland offer excellent snorkelling.
