Upon arrival, begin your vacation with a piece of Bacardi rum cake, some wine, and complimentary tour of the neighborhood with a stop at the local grocery store!
The newly renovated modern cottage, with its light and airy decor, is situated in pretty gardens, including am herb garden for one’s culinary tastes, with a covered verandah overlooking the sheltered pool. Located half way between St. Georges and the main city of Hamilton (each approximately 20 minutes away), the closest beach is about 5 minutes along the South Shore Road at John Smiths Bay, via mopeds or the bus. The bus heading west will take you into Hamilton, and an easy transfer allow you to take the buses heading even further west into Somerset; heading east lies the beach and St. Georges.
Bus service to the door stops after 5pm- HOWEVER buy the bus passes and please note that you can take the #10 or #11 bus back from Hamilton or St. George late at night to Flatts and the taxi fare back to the house is only approximately $8 + tip. Scooters are useful at this location.
Mopeds can be rented from Smatts Cycle Livery. See links under the For Your Information section of our website for this, and many other useful services.
Shopping in the neighbourhood includes a supermarket at the junction of Collectors Hill and the South Shore Road, where there is a pharmacy and a great little family style café called The Speciality Inn. They will be happy to serve you delicious home cooked meals at very reasonable prices. The Northrock Brewery Pub is also in the neighbourhood. Harrington Hundreds is another nearby supermarket with a fine selection of gourmet items including specialty items including gluten free products etc., as well as liquor, beer and wine. They will deliver to the house for a fee. You pass Harrington Hundreds Grocery Store on the way to John Smiths Bay, so stop in and pick up fresh bread and cheese and some cool drinks for the beach. Drycleaners, a pizza parlour and a Post Office are also nearby.
Flatts Village is five minutes away by bus or mopeds (and is delightful village) with nice places to eat (Rusticos is particularly pleasant), gift and other shops, as well as the Aquarium and Zoo – a charming and rather fascinating display of fish, turltes and birds, as well as an absorbing museum and geology section. Sports activities include tennis courts (which can be booked at reasonable rates) at the Grotto Bay Resort, which is 10-15 minutes away by bus.
Golfers will enjoy Tuckers Point, Midocean Club or the Ocean View Course in Devonshire. For Tuckers Point and Mid-Ocean Golf Course tee times, it is necessary to call the clubhouses to see if there are slots available to non members on the day you wish to golf.
Spittal Pond is a south shore park on the way to John Smiths Bay that features a salt-water marsh and a spectacular section of the rugged rocky coastline. Here one can see the initial and the date of 1543 carved in stone at Spanish Rock.
Hiking is enjoyable at Ferry Reach and St. Davids Head, two of the larger and more interesting parks. Consult your detailed Bermuda map, available at Bermuda Bookstores for clearly marked areas and the best road instructions for the out of the way lanes and side roads.
Swimming and snorkelling are good on most beaches. However, Shelly Bay Beach (10 minutes away) is very safe, never has an undertow (as do many of the more turbulent South Shore beaches) and the caves around the headland offer excellent snorkelling. St. Catherine’s Beach and Tobacco Bay in St. Georges are great beaches year round – sheltered and with marvellous numbers of fish and a cute little pub now operating on the beach. Superb new beaches to explore include the collection at Coopers Island Nature Reserve: bring a picnic and lots of drinks- this is a marvellous place but there are no shops or cafes nearby. Diving, sailing and windsurfing are all available at Grotto Bay and Castle Harbour, which are nearby.
