Mild Winter Weather

Escape the bone-chilling cold of other destinations and embrace the mild winter weather of North Myrtle Beach. It has cooler temperatures in December, with 32-41°F on the low end and 54-63°F on the high end. This makes outdoor activities like golfing on world-class courses and exploring nature trails in nearby parks comfortable and enjoyable.

On top of all, this pleasant weather allows you to still revel in the beauty of the beaches without the scorching summer heat or bone-chilling winter. The crisp ocean breeze will definitely invite you to take leisurely strolls along the shore, collect seashells, or simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of the beach.

Festive Coastal Spirit

While the image of palm trees swaying in the breeze might seem contrary to traditional winter scenes, North Myrtle Beach fully embraces the holiday spirit. The city comes alive with festive decorations, twinkling lights, and a cheerful atmosphere that welcomes visitors to experience Christmas on the coast.

The North Myrtle Beach Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony is a highlight of the season, drawing locals and tourists alike to witness the illumination of a towering tree adorned with colorful lights. The charming shops and boutiques along Main Street don festive decorations, creating a picturesque setting for holiday shopping and leisurely strolls.

Many lighting events are hed from late November into December. For example, Christmas Tree Lighting at McLean Park was held last November 28. Several visitors enjoyed various activities, stage performances, Christmas music, caroling, and refreshments. But don’t lose hope! You can still enjoy the spirit of Christmas in the park until the end of the year.

Unique Holiday Events

Not only Christmas tree lighting events, but North Myrtle Beach also offers many other holiday events and activities throughout December. Whether traveling with family, friends or as a couple, you'll find something to suit every taste.

One example is the Christmas Regatta. It’s a local tradition every Saturday after Thanksgiving. It features a dazzling display of decorated boats parading along the Intracoastal Waterway. This nautical twist on holiday festivities is a unique experience that captures the essence of coastal celebrations. However, the event had already passed.

Alternatively, visit Broadway at the Beach on Saturday, December 7th, to experience Myrtle Beach's sole official holiday parade! The parade features numerous local floats and maintains a distinctly family-friendly atmosphere. Festivities start at 11 am, starting the parade route close to the Hard Rock Café and winding through the complex, concluding near WonderWorks. Stay in the Broadway area after the parade to enjoy entertainment for a delightful afternoon full of fun!

If you can’t make it to a parade on Saturday, there's also the Murrells Inlet Christmas Parade on a Sunday afternoon. It starts at 3:00 pm, going down highway 17 business, by the popular MarshWalk area. You'll see local floats, marching bands, motorcycles, and more in this cheerful event!

For those seeking a cultural touch, the Alabama Theatre's The South's Grandest Christmas Show also promises an enchanting performance with holiday music, dance, and comedy. It's a perfect way to infuse your December getaway with the magic of the season.

Golfing Extravaganza

For golf enthusiasts, December is an ideal time to tee off on North Myrtle Beach's renowned golf courses. The mild weather and quieter courses create the perfect conditions for an unhurried and enjoyable golfing experience.

Courses like Tidewater Golf Club and Barefoot Resort offer challenging play and stunning views of the coastal landscape. Imagine a day spent on the green and a relaxing evening by the beach—a golfer's dream winter getaway.

Year-Round Attractions

While some attractions may see seasonal adjustments, many of North Myrtle Beach's year-round offerings are still accessible in December. Explore Barefoot Landing, a shopping and entertainment complex that continues to enchant visitors with its diverse array of shops, restaurants, and live entertainment.

Nature enthusiasts can discover the wonders of the area's parks and preserves. From the serene surroundings of McLean Park to the picturesque beauty of Heritage Shores Nature Preserve, there's always a new corner of nature to explore, even in the winter months.

Additionally, resorts and accommodations, typically bustling during peak season, offer more affordable rates in December, allowing you to enjoy the luxury of beachfront living without breaking the bank. Whether you prefer a cozy beachside cottage or a stylish oceanfront condo, North Myrtle Beach provides a range of options for a peaceful winter retreat.

Whether you're attracted to the serene beaches, festive holiday happenings, or the charm of off-season exploration, a December trip to North Myrtle Beach promises a unique and unforgettable winter escape. Enjoy the coastal ambiance, soak in the holiday cheer, and make lasting memories in this unexpected December destination.

Everyone is Welcome in North Myrtle Beach

Nevertheless, South Carolina’s coast often attracts a more mature crowd as well. Cigar bars, fine restaurants, and theaters spot the streets minutes away from your vacation rental. In fact, thousands come simply to see the North Myrtle Beach House of Blues or to experience the variety at Barefoot Landing. On the other hand, serious golf enthusiasts flock the World Tour—the Grand Strand’s most unusual and unique 27-hole golf complex—which is only one of many incredible courses. Sailors and fishers also feel right at home in South Carolina. North Myrtle Beach is popular for several types of fishing and hosts numerous tournaments throughout the year. Are you up for the challenge?

The Transformation of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Today, North Myrtle Beach is known as one of the primary tourist destinations along the Grand Strand. Divided into Windy Hill, Ocean Drive, Cherry Grove, and Crescent Beach, North Myrtle Beach includes a mixture of vacation rental spots. However, the region was practically uninhabitable for centuries. Originally, the Winyaw and Waccamaw Indians ruled the area until Spanish explores landed in 1514. Rumors spread that even the notorious pirate Blackbeard once lived nearby as well. Still, the coast was home to fishermen, timbermen, and farmers. Although, it was not until the early 1900s that the new railroad connected inland towns to the ocean and helped popularized the area. Naturally, since its modernization, North Myrtle Beach continues to thrive and attract new travelers every year.
