Property Description

The cottage is located in Columbia, NC, 45 minutes west of Manteo, 2.5 hours east of Raleigh and 5 hours northeast of Charlotte. Edenton, Elizabeth City, and the Outer Banks towns of Manteo, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills are all within a reasonable drive, offering shopping, dining, the beach, history, nature and activities like fishing, birding, hiking, hunting, boating, canoeing and kayaking. Right in downtown Columbia you'll find a couple of restaurants and an oyster bar. There is also an excellent Visitor's Center right on the Scuppernong River at Highway 64. Be sure to stop in to get directions, brochures and ideas for your trip.

Egret is an ideal location for those who seek a truly restful and relaxing place to be. It is located at Lasseters Landing, just six miles outside the village of Columbia (population 900) in Tyrrell County (population 5,000). Columbia is the last town you reach before getting to the Outer Banks towns of Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. Our lovely town has 3 restaurants, a library, a great visitor's center, and the county is home to thousands of acres of preserved wetlands, including the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and Educational Center on the Scuppernong River. Egret is about 45 minutes west of Manteo and the Outer Banks and all the many offerings there, from movies to shopping to dining to hang gliding to kayak tours and so much more.

The area around the cottage is perfect for kayaking, canoeing (both right from the door if you bring your own), bird watching, hiking, bicycling (miles of flat roads to enjoy), fishing (from our own pier) or deep sea fishing (try Pirates Cove Charters), visiting historic plantations (Somerset Place and Hope Plantation, to name a few), museums (like the North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island), gardens (the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island), plays (The Lost Colony has been running for 70 years at the Roanoke Island Festival Park) and viewing wildlife - from egrets, herons, ospreys, pelicans and the endangered red cockaded woodpecker, to deer, turtles, and if you are lucky a black bear or a red wolf. And that's just to start the list of possibilities.

Testimonials

“How did you ever find this place?
We love it, absolutely love it. Our kind of place...
simple, quiet, off the beaten path, on the water...
just us and the wildlife.
We are already talking about our return visit.”
- Walt & Dee

“Your cottage is great. So comfortable and clean.
Perfect spot right on the water and best of all we were the only ones there!!
Dolphins one day out by the pier.
… we could take our kayaks out the back door
and spend the day paddling up and down the shoreline.
Love the city boardwalk, too, and the fresh seafood store down the street.
Beautiful spot, great cottage, great service.
Thanks for sharing it with us.”
- Karen

“Thank you for the fast return of our deposit.
We had a wonderful time at the cottage and will definitely be back.
It is a very nicely appointed cottage with a wonderful view.
We have already passed your website info to an interested friend
who also likes to visit wildlife preserves.
We look forward to the next visit.”
- Dinah & Steve

“I was just going to let you know that my husband and I had a wonderful time
at Egret! We just loved the privacy and isolation while still getting to
enjoy the water and a beautiful view! We loved sitting out on the pier and
watching the sunset. The screened in porch is awesome and so comfortable.
We took the [Scuppernong River] boat ride that is offered at the visitor's center and
enjoyed that and went over to Bodie Island and sat on the beach. We looked
for bear but didn't get to see any this time.
We enjoyed our getaway and thank you for opening your place to us.”
- Jacqueline & Wade

Our stay at the cottage was WONDERFUL. It was the perfect place for some
much needed R&R, regrouping, and most importantly reconnection. Although
the weather was not as cooperative as we would have liked, the comforts
and coziness of the cottage set the perfect ambiance for the much needed
quality time we spent. We look forward to returning since it is now a
special place for us.
