Property Description

This cozy two-bedroom, one-bath condo lies hidden behind wrought iron gates and down a winding pathway. The Shipyard, part of the Truman Annex neighborhood named for President Harry Truman, is Old Town's premiere gated waterfront community. The manicured landscaping, verdant palms, and white picket fences give the Annex a lovely park-like atmosphere. Don't be surprised if you see exotic birds like the snowy egret taking a stroll right in the Shipyard gardens. All this tranquility makes it hard to imagine that Duval Street, Key West's central artery of entertainment is a mere two blocks away.

The two-story white wooden structure at Shipyard has a condo below and above. Yours is above and features front and back balconies. Either is ideal for enjoying what locals call sweet weather, a cup of coffee, or that newspaper or novel you brought along. If you're thinking of a swim, a heated pool with spacious patio is just steps away. For your convenience and comfort, the "Shipyard Residents Only" pool area provides chaise lounges, high-speed internet, bathrooms, and shower. If you prefer the real beach, the sun and sea breezes at Fort Zachary Taylor are right in the neighborhood. At the beach, have a sandwich and beer at the snack bar or rent an umbrella and chairs to watch the world of swimmers, divers, sailors, kayakers, and jet skiers pass by.

But wait, you aren't even unpacked yet. Enter your vacation home from the front porch, unlock the door to your left, and head up the carpeted stair case. At the top you'll find a welcoming, fluid open floor plan that combines the kitchen, dining area, and living room. A door at the back of the kitchen opens to the front balcony and the living room door leads to the back balcony. The galley kitchen has everything you need to cook a meal at the stove. There's plenty of cupboard space above and every appliance conveniently tucked in below.

Next to the kitchen, the dining area provides a round, glass-topped table, colorful table linens, and four chairs. Sitting here you can enjoy the view out the French doors to the back balcony with blue sky and palm trees beyond. Or take your meal outside using the balcony's dining table and chairs. The living area features a bamboo couch, coffee table, and arm chair, all the same warm honey color as the Travertine tile floors. Colorful fish add tropical decoration to the walls. A "Casablanca" fan whirs above, circulating air throughout. In fact white ceiling fans cool every room whether you're using the central air conditioning or not. A corner-situated TV provides convenient viewing from the couch or chair. Need more seating? Just bring in the dining area chairs.

Just off the living/dining area are the master bedroom, which features a queen bed, chest of drawers, wall-mounted TV, and plenty of natural light from a large window; a full bath; and a second bedroom with twin beds. Each bedroom offers plenty of closet and drawer space for your flip-flops, shorts, swimwear, sunglasses, camera, hat, you name it.

Once you've settled in, the free-spirited fun of America's only Caribbean island awaits you at the Historic Seaport, on Duval, at the Southernmost Point, or at the beaches along the Atlantic. Check out the tours, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. While your condo comes with reserved parking, you don't really need a car. From your central location, everything is easily accessible by foot, bike, pedicab, or taxi. Strolling Duval, you might find yourself posing for a photo-op with a pirate, a six-foot-tall drag queen, a Hemingway look-alike, or maybe even Jimmy Buffet in person.

When you've had enough for one day and head back to your condo to relax and plan for the next day, make one last stop at the Green Parrot for a little live music, a libation, and free popcorn among writers, artists, locals, and visitors. At the corner of Southard and Whitehead (the first and last bar on Highway 1), it's right on your way back to the Shipyard.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on our website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events include milezerokeywest.com and Paradise, which comes out every Thursday.

This home is very nice, clean and well equipped. Great location, close to everything! Keyless entry would be a great way to improve but overall, I highly recommend the Shipyard!

The property is in a good location. The surroundings are beautiful. I liked the outdoor space - a balcony for relaxing. The property was a little outdated - the stove was not up to date and the counter tops were Formica instead of stone. The kitchen is equipped with all kinds of things needed for preparing food.

Our condo was small but very comfortable. Loved the balcony and spent many happy hours there. Condo had everything we needed. Location is terrific, close to everything yet quiet. Grounds are lovely. Beautiful pool. We rented bikes and easily saw the whole island from our location.

This is the second year we have stayed in this property. When we arrived it was immaculate and ready! The location is fabulous and within walking distance to all you need in Old Town. The property is in the middle of everything, yet very quiet . (rental agent) at Historic Hideaways is wonderful to work with. He is friendly, professional, and efficient in all tasks you ask of him. Historic Hideaways is a score if you are looking for help in finding your next rental property.

The condo has everything you could possibility need for your stay. Kitchen is stocked with anything you would ever need. The new shower was very nice. Love that there is a back deck and front porch. The pool however was a different story. It was mobbed with people every single day. No matter what time of day you went the lounge chairs and tables/chairs were in use. There were 3 families with children who were all related and they monopolized the pool area everyday. They drank alcohol excessively and the noise level grew louder as the day went on. Other than that we had a wonderful time. Its our second time staying in the Shipyard and we definitely plan on returning in December 2020!! The location is perfect, we love staying in the Truman Annex.

The unit was clean and in a perfectly central location to downtown key west. It had a parking spot, but the location really allows you to walk just about anywhere in 5-10 minutes and a car very unnecessary. The Shipyard had everything we needed from toilet paper and tissues, to beach towels, full fridge with washer and dryer.
This was a beautiful setting looking out of the balcony off the living room.

Great location in a well-kept community, close to all the amenities on Duval Street. The unit was clean and tidy, although the kitchen could be due for renovation and some of the bedding contained artificial fibers, which was not comfortable in the heat.
It was our second stay in the unit--very much hope to return some day.

Terrific 2-bedroom condo, very well appointed and maintained, in an ideal location for us to reach all our favorite spots on foot. Pleasant walk to Mallory Square or Southernmost Point--roughly equidistant between the two. It was our second stay in the unit--very much hope to return some day.

I loved staying here. It was quiet, private and safe and the perfect distance from all the hustle and bustle of Duval St. The pool was perfect. Having a washer and dryer was huge for me. Everything I needed was in the unit. The unit could use a little updating, especially the bathroom. The shower is small and the water pressure could have been better. I would definitely stay here again but would prefer a unit on the first floor as the stairs were a little tricky when carrying luggage or groceries up or down. Lovely place.

Great new deli ( The Courthouse) right down the street. Great sandwiches!! We would definitely stay at the Shipyard, again (very clean) and hope to in the future!!

The home did not work well for us. I did not expect to have to was the towels three times on vacation. We also came down on a plane and did not expect to almost run out of toilet paper. There was only two rolls there for us to use. My husband had a hard time with the steps everyday but we managed. The next time when we visit we will stay at a hotel and have cleaning service and breakfast included. We did like Key West and will try to come back someday.

We've stayed in this condo several times now. The location is great, just a hundred years from the World-famous Green Parrot bar and a few more steps to Duval St. However, it's possible to stroll to Mallory Sq for Sunset Celebration without pushing through the crowds, passing Truman's Little White House at the same time. How cool is that? The condo is well and thoroughly furnished, even chairs, towels and coolers are provided for the beach. We drive down from Miami Airport but if you fly direct you don't really need a car, everything is a stroll...just like life in Key West should be.

The furniture was not as comfortable as we would've liked, but we had plenty of space and loved having a full kitchen. The covered porch was also great because it gets so hot during the day. The shower in our bathroom was very clogged when we first arrived, but that was quickly fixed after I mentioned it to (rental agent). Everything else in the condo worked, no issues with electronics or appliances. We were in a second floor unit with neighbors on all sides, but had no noise issues. We liked being close to Ft Zachary Taylor and a few blocks off Duval St. Close to restaurants and shopping and only about a 10 minute walk to Mallory Square and Sunset Pier.

I loved staying at the Shipyard. The location was very quiet but was within walking distance of all the action at Key West. The only time we had to drive was to visit other locations in the Keys such as Bahia Honda State Park. There was a full kitchen with all basic equipment. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The pool is heated and is kept at the perfect temperature, not too hot or cold. I can't wait to return to Key West and stay at the Shipyard again. The sofa cushions have seen better days. They looked fine but when you sat on them you sank down and it was uncomfortable to sit there for any length of time. The chair is the same design and material but it was supportive and fine as it likely has gotten less use.

The Truman Annex is a great place to stay it is very quiet at night if you want some peace and a 5 minute walk to Duval street if you want some night life. Our shipyard condo had all the amenities you could want. I'll be coming back next year which is the best endorsement i can give it. (rental agent) was also very helpful telling us places to eat and some tips getting around.

Check-in was very quick and (rental agent) did an excellent job at explaining the area and providing us with useful information regarding restaurants and activities. I really felt that he did an above-and-beyond job at making sure we had a great vacation. The house was clean and anything that we needed (cleaning supplies, detergent, etc) as well as information regarding the house was available to us. The location was nice. Most everything was within walking distance or was a $5 cab ride. The only thing we found a bit annoying was that the community pool hours were not followed by the community staff. Often we found the pool locked during the middle of the day. Of course I understand that Historic Hideaways has no control over this as they simply own one of the lots on the site. After a long day of swimming, charters, and walking around town, we were always looking forward to relaxing at the house. My fiance and I really enjoyed our stay. We're already planning to return next year!

I was recommended to Historic Hideaways Shipyard unit by a friend who has stayed there many times. No wonder! The location, for my wife and I at least, is perfect, close to Duval, Mallory Sq and Fort Zac. Shops, sunset, bars and beach, all stroll able. We have stayed in Key West many times but haven't enjoyed anywhere more. The entire Truman annex has a feel of security, dedicated car parking spot - essential in Key West if a car is part of your trip but to be honest, we didn't even see the vehicle for three of our seven days. We'll be back.
