These beaches consistently rank among the top beaches in the world. Dunedin is a small community that has open waterfronts from A SarasotaA toA Cedar KeyA. A 1-mile stretch of Edgewater Drive (also called Alternate US 19), south of downtown, offers views of St. Joseph Sound and Caladesi Island. Clearwater Beach and downtownA ClearwaterA are six miles south of Edgewater. The downtown business district is distinguished by its lack of large commercial signage, corporate restaurants or chain retail stores. The 39-mile-long A Pinellas Trail, a bicycle and pedestrian trail that runs through Pinellas County, cuts through downtown Dunedin. The trail runs along the former route of theA Orange Belt Railway. This railroad was established in Pinellas County in 1888. Dunedin has been theA spring trainingA headquarters of theA Toronto Blue Jays and theA Florida State League's class-AA Dunedin Blue JaysA since 1977. Dunedin is one the smallest communities that Major League spring training teams use, but it is close to major metropolitan areas. A Florida Auto Exchange StadiumA is located just two blocks east from Edgewater Drive and a few blocks south on Douglas Avenue. The stadium was built to replace Grant Field, the Blue Jays first spring training baseball park. The oldest Pinellas County public library, the library was established in 1895. In the 19th century, Dunedin was home to Scottish families. John W. Marston was one of the first settlers. He was a skilled carpenter, and a citrus farmer, who provided work for many who arrived in the area. Douglas and James Somerville named the settlement Dunedin after their home in A Scotland, Dunedin. Dunedin was established in 1852 and is the oldest town south-ofA Cedar Key, Florida. Dunedin was the first Florida port to be built to accommodate larger sailing boats. It also became a major trading and shipping hub. Dunedin was incorporated as an independent town in 1899. This was partly in response to many complaints about pigs running wild in the settlement. It also led to a ban on livestock within the city limits. The town had a population only 350 by 1913. It was incorporated in 1925 as the City of Dunedin.
