Property Description

Poinciana House, a one-bedroom, two-full bath conch cottage, is a standout in authentic Florida design and guest friendliness. The private pool area and tropical garden is where you find the namesake Royal Poinciana tree complete with a chair hammock beckoning from one enormous branch. Swinging back and forth, you can almost hear strains of the 1930s classic song "Poinciana" (the song of the trees). Another compelling feature of the cottage is its location just a half block from the Ernest Hemingway house and from Duval Street, the main artery for all that fun stuff you came to Key West to enjoy.

As typical in Key West, the cottage architecture takes full advantage of the sundrenched weather with a rear covered patio, private heated pool, outdoor shower, side patio, and second floor sundeck. The rear patio is generous and defined by redwood planking underfoot and a roof overhead. It's dotted with patio furniture including the perfect dinner spot, a wicker dining table and matching chairs. Maybe the setting will inspire you to barbecue something savory at the gas grill and enjoy eating it al fresco here.

Two steps down puts you at the edge of the dramatic L-shaped lagoon pool, which extends across the rear of the cottage and up the left side swimming lane, ending at a hidden conversation area off the front bedroom. Linger near the pool's jets, swim laps, or just paddle around to refresh. A fourth option is ascending a spiral staircase to the sundeck overlooking the pool, where you'll find chaise lounges and plenty of tanning space.

Poinciana House is demarcated from Olivia Street by an off-street parking area and a white picket fence. Inside the fenced perimeter is a front garden that leads to the front porch. Get out your camera because one garden feature is an amazing banyan tree with multiple external roots, extensive branching, and large leaves. The cottage front door opens into a bedroom suite with a queen bed, sitting area, bath, and generous closet space for folded and hanging travel attire. But best of all, one wall is composed of glass French doors that lead to a private outside conversation area perfect for enjoying a cup of morning coffee in your PJs. In case you brought the kids or expect guests, more sleeping areas include an open space adjacent to the kitchen with a full platform bed and a pull out queen futon in the living room.

The kitchen is painted cloud white with wood accents and has all the appliances you'll need to cook a meal or just microwave some yummy leftovers. There's plenty of counter space and windows at every turn. One arm of the counter does double duty as an eat-at bar with stools. Sunshine yellow walls, a hanging wine rack, and hardwood floors complete the perfect picture. Across from the kitchen is the second full bath done in dramatic black and white decor.

The next rectangular area encompasses the living and dining area. Two couches the fire-orange color of a blooming Poinciana tree provide plenty of comfortable seating for watching TV or enjoying the company of friends and family. During daytime this area is flooded with natural light from the wall of French doors leading to the deck and pool area. Adjacent to the living area is the inside dining area, which includes a round table with four upholstered chairs. So many choices-eat at the breakfast bar, eat here, or eat on the covered patio. You could even take snacks and drinks up to enjoy on the sundeck that feels a bit like a tree house. Of course there's also cable, wireless high-speed Internet, and a DVD player.

Or maybe you'd rather eat out at one of Key West's over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. You can decide as you explore Whitehead Street and the Southernmost Point marker. Or walk half a block in the other direction to find Duval, which runs the width of the island from the Gulf of Mexico to a pier jutting out into the wide Atlantic Ocean. If you want to buy a silly T-shirt or have your picture taken with an Elvis-look-alike, Duval is the street. It also offers opportunities for tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and eateries. This home is Pet (Dog) Friendly**(please see below or our FAQ page for rules and restrictions)

We just returned from a stay here and it is such a sweet little cottage. It was perfect for just my husband and myself to celebrate our 20th anniversary. This was our first visit to Key West and we fell in love. This cottage was adorable and Tim was so responsive to my many questions. The pool is absolutely amazing- we would walk around Key West for a few hours and then return to the pool to cool off for a few more before doing it all over again. The backyard where the pool is located makes you feel like you are far away from all of the action, when in reality you are just a block from it. The location of Ponciana is absolutely perfect! Right off Duval but you would never know because it’s quiet. We walked everywhere. There are many, many restaurants nearby and Cuban Coffee Queen right up the street on Duval, which I frequented each morning. There were lots of rooster friends who enjoyed making sure we were awake each morning, which I loved. I just cannot say enough good things about this little place, it was perfect for us. We hope to return to Key West again and if we do, I will for sure be using Historic Hideaways, they were very helpful .

We enjoyed a wonderful stay! The home is everything you would expect from the pictures with one small exception. The main bath has been updated and is beautiful! It is a large walk-in shower with a powerful shower head. We requested an iron and vacuum and the request was promptly fulfilled. Reason for vacuum request was not due to dirtiness of the home but because we wanted to keep it as clean as it was on arrival. The backyard setting is absolutely beautiful and made for relaxing . As an FYI pool cleaning is done early in the day so don’t be surprised when they show up. While we were there is was done on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The only updates I would suggest would be kitchen counters, refrigerator area and to have chairs on front porch. While we were there we just used the patio chairs. Historic Hideaways will always be our Key West go to.
This home and location is very relaxing and enjoyable.

The customer service provided by Historic Hideaways and the staff was again exceptional. Several questions and minor issues that we had were handled the same day. The furniture and appliances are not brand new here, but everything is in fine working condition. The only exception is that the outdoor shower could use some updating. The headliners here are the rooftop sundeck, the covered back deck and of course the private pool. The house is spacious and very bright due to the amount of windows. The location of the home is residential yet a block away from the southern end of Duval Street with many Restaurants and shops close by including those on whitehead Street. You are also only several blocks away from historic hideaways offices. This home and location is very relaxing and enjoyable.

The house was perfect. Location couldn't have been better-right off Duval yet still far enough away from the main craziness to feel secluded. The back yard was amazing with the pool, covered patio, roof deck and of course the hammock. We loved and used it all! Highly recommend. Plenty of space for our family of 4 (2 teen agers) and 2 yo black lab.

There cannot be a better location for a vacation rental in Key West. We LOVED the outdoor space at this property. We spent much of our time on the patio area, in the pool or on the sun deck. The weather was wonderful so we could open the doors to the patio and turn off the air conditioners. The house was exactly like the photos in the ad showed and was fully stocked with linens, towels and basic toiletries. I would not be surprised if we return to this house in the next year. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

Perfect location and perfect size for me, my husband, and my sister. The pool is amazing. Our typical day would be bicycling around sight seeing in the morning, then back to the house for a swim, then back out for more sight seeing, then back to the pool for a night swim. Even though it was hot and humid, we spent most of our time out on the back patio and in the pool. The air condition units were able to keep the house at a comfortable temperature. Our stay was end of October through early November, the pool definitely does not need to be heated during that time. The kitchen is fully stocked, although we only used the toaster and coffee maker. There is a double closet next to the bed in the front room and another closet at the foot of the bed in the main living area. Both full bathrooms were clean and shower pressure was average. The side gate of the Hemingway house is steps away for visiting the cats. There were at least six different iguanas that enjoy sunning themselves on top of the fence and in the trees in the back.Walking distance to Bahama Village, where there are excellent dining options. The key lime pie at Blue Heaven was the best.We definitely enjoyed our time in Key West and loved the house and it's location.

You will not forget how cool the pool is.

PERFECT location right across from the Hemingway House and about 50 yards from Duval. Everything is within walking distance. Very quite and secluded feel in the beautiful back yard/pool area. Pool could be better maintained and cleaned- lots of beautiful trees and plants but they drop tons of stuff in the water. Great service from Historic Hideaways. House is older and nothing real fancy but it has that old town charm and was perfect us. Would definitely stay there again.
MANAGER RESPONSE:
Thanks for your feedback. Future Guests please note there is 2X a week pool service (most private pool homes we manage only have 1X a week) and even then plan on using the pool skimmer provided for leaves that will inevitably get in the pool in between visits!
Would definitely book again.

Five star all the way. Quick response for all questions. Inside well furnished. Outside was not taken care of before we arrived. Make sure to call before arriving to have them pick up outside. Not a problem but once outside was picked up it was so much nicer. Animals were chickens (squirt water at them and they go away), iguanas (play music and squirt water at them and hope you can control them-six were there at one time), cats (helped keep the chickens away).

Our favorite place in Key West, great house located in Old town- in my personal opinion the best area to be- really good restaurants/bars (also not a bad walk to Duval/Mallory Square area if you want to go there). Perfect house for a couple or small family, such a fun little house. The pool/back porch is wonderful, very private (fenced in but some house guests might include a few of Hemingways cats, couple of roosters, and if youre lucky the iguana hahah- nothing serious or disruptive). Everyone at Historic Hideaways are wonderful and assist if you need anything! My now husband and I usually go down during Memorial Day and stay the week, which is a good time of year to visit. unfortunately could not make it back last year because that was our wedding weekend, but plan on going back soon!

First off (rental agent) is such a friendly and personable contact to work with. The Poinciana House was a late booking for us as our previous Keys location in Islamorada was not quite 'ready' to accommodate us during our dates due to Hurricane Irma from September of '17. However, we were thrilled to find the Poinciana House available during busy Spring Break and on such short notice. What we loved most was the history of the home, how it made us feel everyday, the location and what the quaint Conch Cottage offered for our stay. The house is historic and exceedingly charming. Full of interesting books and games. It felt like a home away from home! We have made several visits to Key West in the past but previous visits were always in hotels or a condo. Having a home right across from the Hemingway House made us feel special. Lots of people cross down the street to get to Duval Street. When we would exit or enter, all would look in curiosity and two couples even asked "how was Key West life?"! Hopefully our brief chats will create even more business for Historic Hideaways and The Poinciana House! The location is fantastic! A block from Duval. How can you top that? Two bathrooms meant never having to wait or rush in the morning. The L shaped pool is amazing and refreshing. We used it everyday and it is truly the highlight of this property! The sun deck easily aided us in our quest for Vitamin D and gave us a great view of Hemingway House. Two wedding receptions took place during our stay so we had free entertainment! I'll close in saying we had a wonderful stay and very much would like to partner with Historic Hideaways again! Thank you HH, and Poinciana House!

Location is perfect for bikes: It was far enough from all the crazy noise of Duval street, but close enough to ride our bikes around to wherever we needed to go. We loved having the covered patio and the pool to hang out at. There were huge iguanas, which we thought were really cool! The only downfall was the first night, the front bedroom was extremely hot with no air circulation. But we called the office and they took care of it for us by bringing several fans. We would absolutely stay here again!

I'm very glad to have discovered the magic of Historic Hideaways. A top-notch company that truly provides the most beautiful properties in Key West with ease and comfort. Booking is always simple and the prices for the amount of luxury are fair, even a steal. We were enamored with the house which was breathtaking; all of the trees and foliage surrounding gave the backyard the ambiance of a hidden lagoon. The pool was the main attraction but one cannot help but fall in love with the entire yard. Our home was stocked with everything we could've needed from towels to spices and seasonings to playing cards. Photos of the property provided on the website do not mislead one in delusions of grandeur; it really IS that amazing and delightfully private ;) . The location was absolutely prime for hitting bars and shopping, but still tucked away so as to never be bothered by passersby. We couldn't have really asked for more. The house is gorgeous but could use a few little maintenance touch-ups here and there, however these are few and minor at most.

We stayed for a week, and absolutely loved this little cottage, though we really only used the back half of it. The house is steps away from the side gate of Hemingway House and the Six Toed Cat cafe. We had bicycles delivered there by Eaton Bikes, and found we really needed them to get to the places we tend to spend the most time at in Key West. The house is divided into two parts with a door between. The front room, which has the bedroom, a nice sitting area, very tiny TV and full bath, and the "great room" which has another bed, hidden behind a counter, a nicely furnished kitchen area, a dining table, another full bath, a larger sitting area with loveseats, a recliner and another TV. There are blinds on all the windows for privacy. The great room has French doors that open onto the covered terrace and large (for Key West) pool, with a lap lane running down the side of the property. There is a "sunning porch" on the roof of the terrace, with a spiral stair that leads up to it. Note: the Pool Man showed up while we were still in bed Monday morning, and before he left, I asked when hed be back Thursday so we could be sure to have the blinds drawn that morning as well. He gets there at around 8 am. He was very quiet and I almost didnt realize he was there, except I saw movement outside just before I stepped onto the terrace, au naturel. We've previously noted that shaded swimming pools are rather chilly to enjoy in October, so we paid the fee to have the pool heated during our stay. That was the best choice we could have made. We used the pool daily, and more. Not bothering with suits because of the privacy fencing. The one issue we noted was that the air conditioner for the larger great room wasn't quite as effective for the large space, as we would have liked, but it did reduce the worst of the heat and humidity for the area. I moved a side table that was in front of the window unit when we arrived, which seemed to help. Nevertheless, we spent most of our down time at the cottage, relaxing at the table on the terrace. Enjoying coffee and catching up online, or in the pool. On a couple afternoons, we could hear the residents of an apartment, Top of Duval, behind the cottage, enjoying their pool/outdoor space. But it didn't last too long and was no more disturbing than neighbors at home would be. Another locals apartment overlooks the terrace from the side, but we noted that it was empty during the day, and blinds were drawn at night. On our last night (Saturday), there was a band playing at Bogarts, on the outside terrace of the Casablanca Hotel. The acoustics between buildings funneled the amplified music right out onto Olivia St. We could hear it loud and clear in our front bedroom, and out on our terrace, but it was less loud in the great room. We were closer to the Southernmost Point than in previous years, so we did explore more places at that end of the island than we have in the past. After returning home, we realized that we ended up being less spur of the moment, when we went to the north end of town. We'd make a plan to hit this and this and this place, before returning. When we stayed off Ann St. we'd wander here and there, then back to the cottage, then go out and come back. Navigating the gate with a bicycle took a bit of practice, and it was easy keep our bikes behind the locked side gate, so we didn't have to fuss with cables and locks once "home." That said, it was always marvelous to return and have a dip in the pool on a hot afternoon. Poincianna House is perfect for a couple. Or it would also work well for two couples who were very good friends. They'd be best served to choose sleeping spots based on who wakes up earliest. Those folks should take the great room bed. The house isn't new, and walking in, you definitely notice that "Florida smell" but this isn't a high end hotel, it is a restored, old home. For folks who want to be at the southern end of Duval, Poinciana House is a gem, for those wanting to be closer to The Square, not so much. You've got to weigh priorities. Weve learned that to get a cottage with a private pool, there really isnt anything available nearer to the north side of the island. We loved this little cottage.

This place is a slice of heaven. Adorable from the front and even better in the back. Covered porch and pool in the backyard along with a grill and outdoor shower. Three houses off of Duval, but you'd never know it by the noise level. Only thing we heard was roosters. Can't wait to go back to this beautiful home. You will not be disappointed renting this home

The house was just as Historic Hideaways pictured and described...beautiful. The house was very clean, a pool service came twice a week to clean the pool and rental agent was very informative and helpful. Everything was supplied from towels to suntan lotion. There was nothing we needed to bring except our clothes & food. I would definitely stay here again.
The home was great.

The home was great. Loved the location and the pool. Our only complaint was that the accommodations said there was a stereo system so we didn't bother to bring one, but we really wanted to listen to music by the pool. When we arrive the system wasn't working and when we called they said it had be deactivated because people abused and since we were upset about it we were told they would see about getting us a boom box or something and drop it off or call us and we could pick it up and we never heard another word about it. We ended up having to go to cvs and buy an iPhone speaker which we have 4 of at home and would have brought with us if we had known and it would have saved us a trip and $30. The amenities should be updated because that was something we specifically looked at before coming and was very disappointed with that and the fact no one responded to us after we complained about it.
MANAGER RESPONSE:
Thanks Jennifer. We have removed the Stereo from the amenities. Thanks for bringing it to our attention and sorry for any inconvenience.

We spent 10 days in this property and hated to leave. So conveniently located, yet you felt like you were pretty much away from the rest of the world. The home was built in 1929 and remodeled, yet the owner retained some of the charm of an older home. The grounds were well maintained and beautiful. We found the house to be stocked with everything that we needed when we arrived. We so enjoyed the pool!! Anytime we would go out on an excursion, we would look at each other and say "let's go back to the house for awhile!" Tim was friendly and wonderful to work with as our booking agent. Even though this home does have 2 queen beds, I think you would have to choose a couple that you know extremely well if you would want to rent this home with another couple. We can't wait to go back~will definitely rent this home again!

The pictures aren't misleading - this place is fantastic! I felt as though I spent a week in paradise. We spent much of our time on the pool and porch during the day and went up to the rooftop to watch the stars at night. Although you're right near "everything," you feel that you have privacy because of the fence around the property. I definitely would stay there again.

House was adorable, immaculate and perfectly located. 1 block off of Duval. Very quiet, but close to everything. No car needed. Pool is incredible. The only thing we didn't particularly care for was the enormous iguana that perched in the tree over the pool and did his business...oh well, you can't control nature! lol

I will just cut to the chase; I have already booked for November 2014. I have stayed at other nice places in KW but I love the privacy of the village, the house with private pool and upper deck, and the yard shared only with the wildlife. If you do not care for green iguanas, small aggressive lizards, roosters crowing at all hours, birds, tropical trees and flowers, and locals in the village than this may not be the place for you. This is becoming one of the last areas that has not lost the charm of a Key West lost. I did not want for anything. Easy check-in/out, HH staff were very accommodating, and location, location, location. My home away from home.

My husband and I decided to rent this vacation rental for 7 days, and it was worth every penny! We have been to Key West a few times before, but this was by far the best stay. The heart of the house is the backyard oasis which IS as amazing as the pictures show. We spent countless hours lounging in the shade on the deck, swimming in the gorgeous (pristine!) pool or lounging in the one person hammock chair. We travel all over from Europe to the Caribbean but this was by-far one of the most relaxing trips we've ever done. Not to mention, we parked our car on day 1 and didn't start it up again until 7 days later. We walked a few steps out the front door and you're literally on Duval Street!! Simply amazing. We will definitely be returning to vacation rentals with Historic Hideaways and the Poinciana House again!
When are we going back.

We loved our week stay at the poinciana house! First of all the company was very easy to rent from. Very quick to get back with me when I had any questions. We had no issues with the house at all. The pictures reflected the house perfectly! We absolutely loved the pool and the roof top deck. On top of everything it was super convenient and walking distance to everything! We will definitely be back!

There were 3 of us and while just a tad small, the house was perfect. We are still missing coffee by the pool, walking less than a block to Duval Street, and enjoying all the wonderful restaurants. We can still hear the roosters crowing! The house was private, comfortable, and a cool respite from the heat. We loved it!

This was our second visit to Key West in 2 years and we could not have asked for a better stay! The weather (albeit seasonal) was alittle chilly. Tim @ Historic Hideaways made our rental experience carefree and the Poinciana House was exactly as advertised - the pool was unbelieveably serene, well-maintained and the perfect temperature. More bath towels than the 2 of us needed and plenty of beach towels if only the weather had cooperated. The location was perfect and central to all of our favorites - Blue Heaven, Ft Zachary Beach, and convenience stores were all within a block or two. Would not hesitate to consider Historic Hideaways for a future stay - hopefully soon!
