Property Description

SPRING SPECIALS!

Here's how to craft a perfect vacation. First, buy tickets to fabulous Key West. Second, shop for flipflops and shorts. Third, reserve La Isla Vita for your stay! This two-story, two-bedroom, three-bath home offers what you'd expect and then some. The "then-some" starts with private off-street parking, the house's masterful design, an outside deck, a second-story balcony, a screened-in porch, and one of the largest, most inviting pools on the island. Not to mention a location scant blocks from the Atlantic Ocean.

From the street, the house is beautifully masked in tropical foliage that stretches green palm fronds up beyond the second story into a bright, eternal-summer sky. A white picket fence, which is so emblematic of the island, rings the property. Once past the brick driveway and inside the side gate, a brick path leads to the front porch and entrance.

The door opens into a foyer with a terra cotta tile floor and a graceful staircase of polished hardwood. To the left is an ample living room in ocean blue decorative tones. The flooring here is hardwood with a botanically inspired area rug topped with an artist-inspired coffee table. A spacious couch is perfectly positioned for viewing a flatscreen TV mounted on a dark wood cabinet across the room. The couch also doubles as a queen pull-out bed should someone stop by unexpectedly. On another wall is the door to the guest half-bath. Roman shades in white canvas function as window coverings and wall accents, while two comfy armchairs provide more seating. At the far end of the room is a wall of French doors that provide plenty of graceful, ambient light and a view of the deck, cocktail table, and gas grill just beyond. Of course, there's central AC, high-speed internet, and cable TV at your fingertips. Ceiling fans throughout circulate air and add a touch of beauty and style.

To the right of the foyer is a highly functional kitchen with all the appliances and amenities any vacationer could wish for, whether for warming leftovers, preparing gourmet meals, or grilling some fresh-caught grouper on the deck. Everything has been thought of in advance. The terra cotta tile from the foyer carries through here and is the perfect complement to the honey hardwood cabinets and marbled granite with veins of brown, black, and buff. At the far end of the kitchen is the inside dining area. The table is a beautiful expandable glass design with four chairs. A chandelier and windows provide warm lighting for this area day and night.
Tucked in an out-of-the-way corner nearby is the laundry closet with stacked washer and dryer and shelves for supplies. Here, too, is a door that leads onto the screened-in porch. This area and the deck off the living room provide ample outside living area so prized in island life. The porch includes a couch, chairs, and a small table.

Back inside and up the grand staircase are the bedrooms. To the right is the master with king bed and en suite full bath. To the left is the second bedroom with twin beds that can function separately or together make a second king bed. This also has an en suite full bath. Both rooms are comfortably appointed with abundant storage for hanging and folded items. Both have plenty of windows to let in sunlight or moonlight, and between them a door that opens onto the second-story balcony where you can sit and enjoy the treetops.

A sign in one of the bedrooms proclaims, "Life is Good." The whole living space augments this idea, especially the oversized, climate-controlled pool that is for the exclusive use of the houses in this compound. The water sparkles blue with a delightful play of sun and shadows across its surface from the surrounding trees. The effect creates a tropical oasis right outside your back door. Sit out here in one of the chairs or chez lounges to sun yourself or perhaps float leisurely in the pool, or maybe even do some laps.

Don't rush (because no one rushes on a tropical island), but at some point it'll be time to explore the neighborhood and beyond. When it's that time, you'll find yourself conveniently located a block from Simonton Street, which runs the whole width of the island. Turn left a couple of blocks to find the Atlantic Ocean; turn right twelve blocks to find the Gulf of Mexico. Down two blocks is the world-famous Duval Street where you'll find what Key West is famous and infamous for: tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and numerous restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. Be sure to check your phone for sunset times so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square on the Gulf of Mexico, where locals, visitors, kids, and dogs alike gather to witness the sun sinking into the horizon and applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears. Then most stick around to party on the dock with musicians, street performers, art and jewelry vendors, and food and drink carts.

If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook from Books & Books on Eaton Street or a stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on Greene Street will help make sure you don't miss anything. To know what's going on from day to day, you can check out Historic Hideaways' informative Area Guide/Events page at http://www.historichideaways.com/key-west-events/. Other info on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication the Key West Citizen available at various locations around town.
