Each June, the peaceful waterfront village of Ephraim, Wisconsin bursts to life with one of Door County’s most unique traditions, the Fyr Bal Festival. Rooted in Scandinavian heritage, the festival celebrates the “burning away of winter” and the welcoming of summer with fire, music, food, and community spirit. If you’re planning a trip to Door County, this is an event worth building your visit around.
Fyr Bal” (pronounced fear ball) is Norwegian for “bonfire,” and the festival carries on an old Scandinavian custom of lighting fires to chase away the long winter and celebrate the summer solstice. In Ephraim, this tradition is alive and well, blending history with modern fun.
The Fyr Bal Festival isn’t just another summer event it’s a blend of tradition, culture, and celebration that makes Door County so special. Whether you’re drawn by the Scandinavian roots, the festive atmosphere, or the sheer beauty of Ephraim lit by fire and fireworks, this is an unforgettable way to welcome summer on the peninsula.
