Oak Island Lighthouse
Oak Island Lighthouse | Iconic Coastal Landmark in Oak Island, NC

Located on the southern end of Oak Island, the Oak Island Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable landmarks along North Carolina’s coast. Standing at 153 feet tall, it serves as an active navigation aid guiding ships along the Cape Fear River and nearby Atlantic waters. Completed in 1958, its distinctive concrete structure with bold horizontal stripes sets it apart from traditional lighthouse designs, making it a modern icon of the region’s maritime heritage.
Visitors to the lighthouse can experience it up close through guided tours offered seasonally. Unlike many lighthouses with spiral staircases, this one features a series of steep ship-style ladders that lead to the top, adding a bit of adventure to the climb. Once at the top, guests are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, and surrounding barrier island landscape.

The area surrounding the lighthouse is just as inviting as the structure itself. Scenic walkways, marsh views, and nearby beach access make it a great stop for photography, nature watching, or a relaxing coastal stroll. The lighthouse grounds also provide a peaceful setting to enjoy sunsets and watch boats pass through the nearby channels.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply exploring the island, the Oak Island Lighthouse offers a memorable glimpse into coastal life. It remains both a working beacon and a beloved attraction, symbolizing the island’s strong connection to the sea and its long maritime history.
