Helmsman's Hide-A-Way is a charming 1967, 1100 square foot Craftsman A-frame, nestled on a oversized private wooded lot just blocks from the beach, is a perfect setting for your relaxing coastal getaway. The hand crafted interior features pegged hardwood floors. The wood floors with the curved vaulted celing, and kitchen with open gallery rail shelving gives you the feeling of being on a tall ship from the days of yore. A large raised deck completes the nautical feeling.
On the main floor you'll find the full kitchen which includes a dishwasher, microwave, Jenn Air electric range and refrigerator. There is also an oversized 1 car garage with a full size washer/dryer.
The great room includes a wood stove which takes the chill off the cool coastal nights. The great room opens onto the expansive, sunny deck, and there is also a picnic table in the yard for alfresco dining. On this floor you'll also find a large bathroom with shower/tub combo. The bathroom, just screams 1960's with it's retro shower and vanity surround. While many of us may not want to live with those colors any more, I think it's great fun to see them preserved.
The large main floor bedroom is equipped with two queen size beds and 2 large closets. The bedroom was an addition to the home and the original curved exterior shingled wall of the A-frame has been preserved as a unique architectural feature of the room.
The amazing leaded and beveled glass door in the photo to the right, was from a commercial building and was over 100 years old when installed. We don't know the whole history on it, but maybe we'll find it out as time goes by. From the living room, a spiral staircase takes you to a roomy loft with queen size bed, sitting area and a 1/2 bath. The1/2 bath is tucked behind a partial wall, no door - but beats going down the sprial stairs in the middle of the night. This house just oozes mid-century, while the important stuff has been replaced, i.e. all new mattresses, and high quality linens, the homeowners are letting it's roots show by leaving it's character intact.
I have a thing for A-frames, they've been disappearing, right and left in Florence and on the West Coast in general, as people rip them down and toss up more practical housing. I blogged about this A-frame and Anchor's A-Way in January & March, little did I know I'd wind up with both of them in June 2013 as vacation rentals. While these 2 represent opposite ends of the spectrum, they're both fantastic pieces of history, if you enjoy rustic, funky, and fun historic houses you'll love them, as much as I do. If you're really into A-frames and oddities, ask me and I'll provide you with a self guided tour list, to see in the neighborhood.
Helmsman's Hide-A-Way received a complete electrical upgrade this fall. Which included, putting in a 200 amp service, installing new electrical panel and moving it to the garage, and removing, repairing or covering any old wiring.
