There is a mystique to Depoe Bay. Indeed, this gem of the central Oregon coast is fast becoming one of the most popular vacation getaway destinations on the entire Pacific Coast.
There are many unique attractions that draw visitors to Depoe Bay again and again. It is home to the World's Smallest Harbor. Its bridge was made famous in the Jack Nicholson movie, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." It is the "Whale Watching Capital" of the coast, with a large pod of whales making Depoe Bay their home year-round, and migrating pods helping to make whale watching the local sport.
But the number one attraction is and always has been the contest between the mighty Pacific Ocean and the Depoe Bay coast. It is a contest that has been waged for thousands of years, as the ocean tries to wash away the land. From a couple of hundred yards offshore the waves rise up to a height of 30 to 40 feet or more, lining up across the entire horizon. Like a line of cavalry on white chargers, they rush the shore, with the spray from their crests resembling the manes of horses charging.
The sound as they crest is overwhelming, like a line of canon going off all at once; you find yourself taking an involuntary step backwards at the sound. When the waves hit the shore you're very glad that Depoe Bay is built on solid basalt rock. Just a few yards away from you the waves crash into the rock and sends plumes of spray like geysers a hundred feet into the air, even higher than your top floor aerie. You actually feel it in your feet as the very earth shakes from the impact of the waves. The sound, the sights, the fury; it's a show that never grows old; you never tire of watching.

Entry
As you enter Thundering Surf, you'll know immediately that this is no cookie cutter vacation rental. Sourpusses have been known to break into a smile before they even get in the door. As you cross the threshold the furnishings of Thundering Surf will immediately begin to relax and comfort you. Take off your shoes and get comfortable. The in-the-floor hot water heating system will keep you warm and pampered.
Living Area
The great room style living area is large, light, and wonderfully furnished. This is a top floor (3rd floor) condo, with vaulted ceilings and skylights adding to the sense of spaciousness. There are two elevators serving this building, and Thundering Surf is all on a single level, with no steps inside the unit. It is open and uncluttered, and handicapped accessible, although there are no pull bars, etc.
The living area consists of the kitchen, dining area, and sitting area, with a wet bar and river-rock gas fireplace. From anywhere in the living area you have a fabulous ocean view.
Kitchen
The kitchen is fully furnished, and a joy to work in. It has granite counter-tops and bright white appliances. The skylight adds to the lighting. The refrigerator has a water and ice dispenser in the door. The gas range and microwave will easily handle your cooking chores. There is a pantry large enough to accommodate longer stays. A starter supply of dishwashing and dishwasher soap is provided. All you need to supply are your food and drink. In the midst of meal preparation, the cook need never feel left out; because of the open design of Thundering Surf, even the kitchen has an ocean view.
Dining Area
The dining area is also beautifully and fully furnished. Mealtimes will be delightful, and you may find yourself lingering, enjoying the conversations and the view. There is additional seating at the kitchen counter.
Sitting Area
The sitting area is designed and furnished to maximize your enjoyment of the ocean and coastal views. This is a place for real relaxation, for putting your feet up and getting comfortable. The river-rock gas fireplace and large well-furnished wet bar will add to your comfort and enjoyment.
The main attraction of the living area is the wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the ocean. The views are spectacular. Whether you're watching the crashing waves that gave Thundering Surf its name, or the romantic, multi-hued sunsets you wish would last forever, or even the whales, sea lions, seabirds or other sea animals visible from your living room windows, you'll revel in both the view and the comfort of this dramatic oceanfront vacation condo.
Master Bedroom Suite
The oceanfront master bedroom suite delivers both a breathtaking ocean view and romantic, restful comfort. You can lay in the king bed and watch the moon and stars reflected in the ocean waves, as you are warmed by the master bedroom's fireplace, or cooled by the ceiling fan or ocean breezes. The large walk-in closet will treat your wardrobe with care and contains two luxurious robes for your comfort.
The master suite's bathroom features a luxurious Jacuzzi tub for two. Sink into the restful warmth, feel the refreshing jets, and achieve the state of total relaxation you took this vacation to find. The master bath also features a large step-in shower and double sinks for your convenience. A starter supply of soaps, shampoo, and lotions will add to your enjoyment of this wonderful vacation getaway.
As you relax, you can step directly from the master bedroom suite to the oceanfront deck to enjoy the awesome views offered by Thundering Surf. At any time of day, in any type of weather, you will be treated to a smorgasbord of natural beauty and entertainment. From sunrise to sunset, and all through the night, the ocean will serenade you and the sea life will delight you. Watch out, though, it might bring out the romantic in you-or in someone else!
Second Bedroom Suite
Thundering Surf's second bedroom is large, beautifully furnished, and very comfortable. This spacious and restful room features a queen bed, large closet, window seats, and direct access to the second wonderfully furnished full bathroom. Young or old will enjoy their stay in this suite.
Den/Library
As you enter Thundering Surf, one of the first things you will notice is a unique feature, the OfficeDen/Library. This is a special room, with a built-in desk and the house library. Perfect for those who want to mix a little work with their pleasure, or who just want a quiet place to read. Perfect for students with assignments to finish while on a vacation, or adults who want to tell the boss they were really "working" while here, this is a room that will bring a smile at the lovely furnishings.
Utilitarian Things
Speaking of work, (I know, we shouldn't use such four letter words!) Thundering Surf has a full sized washer and dryer for your convenience, along with an iron and ironing board. A starter supply of laundry detergent and dryer sheets is provided. Also provided is a starter supply of all paper products, dishwasher and dishwashing detergents, face and shower soap, shampoo, and lotion. For cleanup needs there is a house vacuum cleaner.
Deck and View
Thundering Surf's private "Absolute Oceanfront" deck is large, offering stunning views of the ocean and the coastline north and south. This third floor deck is just a few yards from the ocean's edge, just above a unique "valley" in the solid basalt rock. Whales, sea lions, and seals frequently swim right up to the edge of the rock. They are so close you can actually hear the whales spout. In fact, you are often closer to the whales than the whale watching charter boats are allowed to be.
Summer, winter, spring or fall, the view from the deck is awe inspiring. In the morning, as the light strengthens, it is the perfect place for your morning cup of coffee (or glass of champagne!) In the afternoon, at almost any time of year, the sun warms the deck, making it the perfect place to read or hold long, lazy conversations.
Sunsets from the deck are unforgettable, with riotous color that lingers in the sky for a short time and in your mind for a lifetime. As the sun disappears and the sky darkens, the stars come out in numbers that will astound you and, with the moon, dazzle you with a brilliance seldom seen from other locations. It's a sight to be savored, whether in treasured solitude or with friends or family.
And all the time, on the deck of Thundering Surf, you'll be serenaded by the mighty Pacific Ocean, whether by the soft susurrus of summer, or the winter's massive "thundering surf."
