Property Description

The name of this home-Palm d'or-echoes the Palme d'Or, the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival. In this case, the award goes to the palm tree landscaping of this two-bedroom, two full-bath residence. The place is ringed in feathery palms, creating a perfectly secluded oasis right in Key West's historic district: total privacy yet only a few short blocks to warm Atlantic beaches and "World-Famous-for-Fun" Duval Street.

The street view of Palm d'or is of a white picket fence with a wall of palms swaying behind. Next to the driveway is the access gate. Beyond that, the front courtyard is populated by a white table, six chairs, and strings of twinkle lights. The seating, the setting, the lights, and the curtain of palm trees make this private spot ideal for morning coffee or an evening happy hour.

Walking up three wooden stairs brings you through the front door into the house proper. To the left is a living room area with a couch that conveniently converts to a queen bed in case guests drop by for a day or two. Directly in front of the couch is a coffee table whose top is almost completely taken over by a large, professional scrabble board. Sit on the couch or the nearby overstuffed armchair to play the board game or to watch a movie or sports event on the wall-mounted TV. Above is a novelty globe light that adds illumination and aesthetic interest. Of course, there's central AC, cable, high-speed internet, and Sonos music streaming.

While the living room provides a comfortable space for plenty of activities, it's the striking kitchen area that deserves special attention. The space is lit by a contemporary, eye-catching five-lightbulb pendant. Below is a long stone counter unit that is beautiful and multi-functional. At one end is a built-in gas range with oven beneath. Along both sides are copious cupboards and drawers. The under-counter cut-outs on either side are outfitted with two stools apiece, which makes it easy to use the counter as a dining area.

Behind the counter are the usual kitchen accouterments-more counter, more cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, sink, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and more. It would be hard to imagine anything that's missing.

Behind the living room and kitchen are the two queen bedrooms, bathrooms, and washer/dryer alcove. Both bedrooms are super comfy with queen beds. A sign on one wall wishes the weary bonne nuit, and it's easy to imagine that's exactly what would happen-any night spent here would be a good night. Night tables, closets, ceiling fans, and full en-suite baths complete the scene. One bath opens from the bedroom or from the hallway. The other bath is spacious, with two sinks and a large shower area.

From each bedroom, French doors open onto the back deck, which extends the entire length of the house. Like the front, this space is ringed in tall palms that provide tropical beauty. Two woven chaise loungers, gas BBQ grill, and a wrought iron table with four chairs make this the spot where guests can enjoy a typical Key West lifestyle-hanging out and relaxing under a Keys sun or northern hemisphere stars.

When the urge to be out and about hits, check out your Casa Marina neighborhood. It's only blocks to Higgs Beach, a delightful stretch of soft sand and a long fishing pier jutting out into the wide Atlantic Ocean. The beach and restrooms are clean, the volleyball nets are set right in the sand, and the parking is free in case you've elected to drive. Also right on the sand is Salute! On The Beach, where you can lunch or dine on excellent food among writers, artists, families, locals, and visitors.

Or walk a bit further down to the Sun-Sun Beach Bar & Grill at Casa Marina. A little further down but still overlooking the Atlantic is Louie's Backyard, a Caribbean-American restaurant known for fine dining. Or just have a drink under sun umbrellas at their After Deck bar. The ocean comes right up to the cement deck, and tiny Dog Beach is right next door.

From Louie's, you're only a few blocks from Duval, where you'll find what Key West is famous and infamous for: tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. Be sure to check your phone for sunset times so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square on the Gulf of Mexico, where locals and visitors alike gather to witness the sun sinking into the horizon and applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears.

From Mallory, it's easy to explore Key West's Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, you'll find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Owner may consider ONE SMALL dog. Contact Office for details.
