Property Description
Rose Haven is the perfect vacation home if you want to be close to Key West's history and be able to make the most of its present. The charming studio has an open floor plan and a queen bed. It also has a full bathroom, a private garden with a pool, and off-street parking. This is right next to Casa Antigua, where Hemingway wrote "A Farewell to Arms." The residence is just steps from Duval Street, the main avenue for entertainment on the island. Rose Lane's historic charm and notoriety is due to its one-block length, which runs from Simonton to Duval.
Rose Haven is close to Duval and offers privacy and tranquility. The view from the front door is straight through to the sleeping and dining areas. A wall of glass doors leads to a tropical garden oasis. The deck has multiple levels and offers different levels of shade and sun. It has a table, market umbrella, and a lovely pool. You can relax here, read, take a dip in the pool and use the outside shower. Perhaps you'll feel inspired to make something savory for lunch and dinner, and then serve it at the nearby tables. Warm leftovers from dinner the night before and place them on the deck. Key Westers pride their selves on being more outdoors than indoors, which is a good thing considering the great weather and many outdoor activities.
The cottage's main living space is an open plan, with ceiling fans and lots of natural light coming in through windows and doors. The large sleeping area is comfortable with a queen-sized bed and plenty of fluffy pillows. On either side, nightstands hold lamps and any other items you might need such as the remote for your TV or phone. A chest of drawers is located nearby to store your folded travel gear and clothing. A floor-length closet is available for clothes that you wish to hang. Ceiling fans, cable TV, high-speed Internet and in-window AC are all available. The TV is conveniently located for easy viewing from your bed.
To the right, a door leads to a large full bath with two windows. The floor tiles are striking blue and gold. Conveniently, the washer and dryer are located in one corner of this bath near a linen closet that is filled with luxurious towels and other bath products. The shower tub is located on the other side of that wall.
Track lighting and sunlight provide the illumination for the country-style kitchen/dining room with its counter space and stove top, microwave and all the cooking tools you could need. There are plenty of cabinets above and below your sink to store everything. One pivot places you at a table with dining tables. A sideboard crafted by an artisan next to the refrigerator adds color, function, and a little bit of quaintness. The walls are painted a sunny shade of yellow to reflect the warmth of the American hardwood floors and Dade County pine walls.
It's just a block down Rose Lane from Duval, where you'll find Fat Tuesday or the Hard Rock Cafe. Both are known for their colorful, frothy beverages. Caroline's Cafe is directly across the street. It is believed to be named after Jimmy Buffett's song, "Woman Going Crazy On Caroline Street." Duval spans the 14-blocks of the island, from the Gulf of Mexico to Atlantic Ocean. You'll find museums, galleries, shopping and bars all along the island. There are also over 200 restaurants with open-air seating. There are many cultural activities, including live music, art exhibitions and plays. You can catch a movie on any of the Tropic Cinema's four screens. Stop by Books & Books to see Judy Blume stocking shelves.
Make sure to visit Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. You can find tall historic tall ships that offer day and sunset cruises along the wooden boardwalk that runs along the Gulf of Mexico. You can also take an all-day ferry trip to the Dry Tortugas. You can find watersports like parasailing, diving, snorkeling, fishing, jet-skiing and parasailing. There are a dozen restaurants that offer varying degrees of informality around the harbor. The Raw Bar, Boathouse and Schooner Wharf are all great places to grab a Mahi sandwich or Conch Fritters. You can also walk down to find other equally delicious food spots and watering holes.
Fort Zachery Taylor is a local favorite for beaches. Here you can rent umbrellas, chairs, and snorkeling gear. There are also bathrooms, showers, a snackbar, and picnic tables. You might decide to skip the beach and explore the nearby Civil War-era fort. It was designated a National Historic Landmark by the US in 1973.
Make sure you check your phone for sunset times to avoid missing the world-famous celebration at Mallory Square. Locals and tourists alike will gather to watch the sun sink into the horizon seven days a week, 365 consecutive days. As the last edge of fiery orange fades, be sure to cheer. If you're lucky you might see the "green flash" and be able to claim bragging rights for many years. You can then enjoy street performers and artists entertaining the crowd with fire eaters, musicians, fortune-tellers, and performing cats.
A guidebook from Books & Books, Eaton Street, or a visit to the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on Greene Street can help you make the most of your first visit to the Conch Republic. Historic Hideaways' Area Guide/Events will give you a snapshot of what's happening each day. Milezerokeywest.com has additional information about the current music scene, movies and plays, gallery openings and charitable events (calendar section).
