Around 1876, farmers and fishermen settled the region with a series of bayous that feed into the Gulf of Mexico. Tarpon leaping out of the water was something that some of the new arrivals spotted, so Tarpon Springs was named. According to legend, the name was created when a settler stood on the Bayou shore and saw fish leaping out of the water. For the most part, however, the fish that were seen splashing here were mullet, not tarpon. Hamilton Disston, the man who had bought the land that is now Tarpon Springs in 1881, ordered the creation a town plan. Tarpon Springs was incorporated in Pinellas County on February 12, 1887. The Orange Belt Railway, which was the first railroad to be built in Pinellas County, arrived in Tarpon Springs less than a year later, on January 13, 1888. The area was developed during this time as a wintering place for wealthy northerners. Dodecanese Avenue is part of the Greektown Historic District in Tarpon Springs and is the city's main tourist destination. The street runs from Pinellas Avenue to the Anclote River. Many restaurants offer fresh seafood and traditional Greek cuisine. Nearby beaches are part of the Pinellas County park system and are popular for water sports. The waves and storms can cause sandy barrier islands near shore to shift their positions. These islands can be accessed by boat and are ideal for shell-spotting and watching bottlenose Dolphins at play. Anclote Key is a State Park Preserve that includes a lighthouse, bird nesting colonies, and pristine beaches. The Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum, Craig Park, has a permanent exhibit about the history and culture the Greek Community. The Cultural Center, 101 W. Pinellas Avenue, has a rotating list of exhibits about regional and local traditional culture. Parkin Court's Safford House Museum is a museum that tells the fascinating history of one of the city’s early families. The Depot Museum, Tarpon Avenue, provides a brief overview of Tarpon Springs' history. Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, a 300-seat theatre, is located in historic City Hall, 324 Pine Street. It operates year-round and brings a variety of nationally touring artists, musicians, and dancers. as well as a variety community theatre plays featuring local actors, directors, and performers. Tarpon Springs is well-known for its elaborate religious ceremonies, which are hosted by the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. This cathedral is part of the Greek Orthodox Church. It also hosts the Epiphany celebration, which includes youths diving for the cross and blessing the waters and boats. It is easy to understand why the first Greek immigrants were dependent on the sea and their boats to survive. Their attachment to a religious service that sought divine protection for what was once a dangerous job can be explained. The celebration draws Greek Americans from all over the country. It is also known that the city's population triples in size on this day. The blessings are usually presided over by the Metropolitan of Atlanta, sometimes with the Archbishopof America. The blessings end with the ceremonial placing of a wooden cross in the city's Spring Bayou. Boys aged 16-18 dive in to retrieve the cross: the person who recovers it is blessed for a whole year.
