Cape Lookout National Seashore
Cape Lookout National Seashore | Coastal North Carolina

Located along North Carolina’s southern Outer Banks, Cape Lookout National Seashore is one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking coastal destinations in the state. Stretching across a chain of barrier islands including North Core Banks, South Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks, this protected seashore offers miles of undeveloped shoreline, rolling dunes, and a true back-to-nature experience. Accessible only by ferry or private boat, Cape Lookout feels remote and untouched, making it a perfect escape for those seeking natural beauty, wildlife, and solitude away from crowded beaches.
At the heart of the seashore stands the iconic Cape Lookout Lighthouse, instantly recognizable by its striking black-and-white diamond pattern. Visitors can explore the grounds, take in panoramic coastal views, and learn about the area’s rich maritime history, including its role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” The surrounding beaches offer incredible opportunities for shelling, sunbathing, and quiet reflection, often with far fewer crowds than other coastal destinations.
One of the most unique experiences at Cape Lookout is spotting the wild horses of Shackleford Banks. These free-roaming horses are believed to be descendants of Spanish mustangs and can often be seen grazing along the dunes or near the shoreline. Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy birdwatching, as the seashore is home to a wide variety of coastal and migratory birds, as well as sea turtles during nesting season.
Outdoor recreation is a major draw at Cape Lookout National Seashore. Visitors can enjoy kayaking through calm sound-side waters, fishing along the surf for species like red drum and bluefish, or camping under the stars for a truly immersive coastal experience. Off-road vehicle access is permitted in designated areas, allowing for extended exploration of the islands, though permits are required. Whether you’re hiking along the dunes, casting a line at sunrise, or simply soaking in the ocean breeze, the seashore offers endless ways to connect with nature.
For those planning a visit, it’s important to come prepared. There are no commercial services on the islands, so visitors should bring food, water, sun protection, and any necessary gear. Ferry services typically depart from nearby towns like Beaufort and Harkers Island, making access straightforward while still preserving the seashore’s remote feel.
Cape Lookout National Seashore is more than just a beach destination, it’s a place where history, wildlife, and untouched coastal landscapes come together to create a truly memorable and authentic North Carolina experience.
