Missiles and More Museum
Missiles and More Museum on Topsail Island, North Carolina

Located in the historic Assembly Building in Topsail Beach on Topsail Island, the Missiles and More Museum is one of the island’s most fascinating historical attractions. Built in 1946 as part of the secret U.S. Navy Operation Bumblebee missile program, the museum preserves the island’s role in early missile research and aerospace development.
The museum features a wide range of exhibits, including models and artifacts from Operation Bumblebee, a full-size Talos missile, historic photos, technical diagrams, and films. Visitors can learn how Topsail Island contributed to guided missile technology and supersonic flight, along with the stories of WWII training at Camp Davis and Women Airforce Service Pilots who trained in the region.
Beyond military history, exhibits explore pirate legends, local maritime culture, and the natural history of the barrier islands. The museum displays artifacts recovered from island beaches and waterways, including shells, historical objects, and remnants of early rockets. Hands-on exhibits and suspended missile displays provide a fun and educational experience for families and history enthusiasts alike.
Operated by the Historical Society of Topsail Island, the museum also hosts lectures, walking tours, educational programs, and community events such as the Autumn with Topsail Festival. Visitors can enjoy an immersive look at the island’s heritage, combining military history, coastal ecology, and local culture in one unique destination.
More Detail:
Located in the historic Assembly Building in Topsail Beach on Topsail Island, the Missiles and More Museum is one of the island’s most fascinating historical attractions. The building itself was constructed in 1946 as part of a top-secret U.S. Navy missile research program known as Operation Bumblebee. During this Cold War–era project, rockets were assembled inside the building before being transported to nearby launch pads for testing along the island’s remote coastline. The museum opened in 1995 to preserve this important chapter of American military and aviation history while also celebrating the broader cultural heritage of Topsail Island.
Today the museum offers visitors a wide range of exhibits that explore both military innovation and local coastal history. The Operation Bumblebee exhibit is the centerpiece, displaying models and artifacts from the early missile program along with a full-size Talos missile outside the building. Displays explain how research conducted on Topsail Island helped advance guided missile technology and contributed to later aerospace developments. Historic photos, technical diagrams, and films help illustrate how this remote barrier island played a key role in the early days of supersonic flight and missile guidance systems.
Beyond missile history, the museum also explores many other stories connected to the region. Exhibits highlight nearby Camp Davis, a World War II anti-aircraft training base that brought thousands of soldiers to the area. Visitors can learn about the pioneering Women Airforce Service Pilots who trained during the war and played a crucial role in ferrying military aircraft across the country. Additional displays explore pirate legends connected to the North Carolina coast, including stories about the infamous pirate Blackbeard, as well as exhibits about barrier island ecology, local maritime life, and the natural history of Topsail Island.
One of the museum’s most unique features is its collection of local artifacts discovered along the island’s beaches and waterways. These include shells, historic photographs, military equipment, and even remnants of early rockets recovered from the ocean. Visitors may also see missiles suspended from the ceiling, hands-on displays for children, and interpretive exhibits explaining how the barrier island formed and how wildlife thrives in this coastal environment. Together, these displays create a well-rounded experience that blends science, nature, military history, and local culture.
The museum is operated by the Historical Society of Topsail Island, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of the Greater Topsail Island area. In addition to maintaining the museum, the organization hosts lectures, walking tours, educational programs, and community events throughout the year. The Assembly Building also serves as a venue for festivals, including the popular Autumn with Topsail arts and music festival, making the museum grounds a cultural hub for the island community.
Visitors to the Missiles and More Museum will find it an engaging stop for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the surprising role Topsail Island played in early missile development and aviation research. Whether you are exploring the island’s military past, learning about pirates and coastal ecology, or simply enjoying a unique local museum, this attraction provides a memorable look at the history that helped shape both the region and modern aerospace technology.
