Sombrero Reef in Marathon, Florida Keys | Boating, Snorkeling & Diving

Located about 4 to 5 miles offshore from Marathon in the Middle Florida Keys, Sombrero Reef is one of the most famous coral reef destinations in Florida. Part of the protected Florida Reef Tract and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the reef is known for crystal-clear water, tropical marine life, snorkeling, scuba diving, and the historic lighthouse rising above the Atlantic Ocean.
Where is Sombrero Reef?
Sombrero Reef sits offshore of Marathon in the Middle Keys near Vaca Key. The reef lies inside the protected Sombrero Key Sanctuary Preservation Area and surrounds the iconic lighthouse known as Sombrero Key Light. The reef system is one of the most visited snorkeling and diving areas in the Florida Keys because of its shallow depth, accessibility, and diverse marine ecosystem.

Why Sombrero Reef is Famous

Although visitors cannot climb the lighthouse, many snorkeling and diving tours circle the structure for sightseeing and photography opportunities.
