The experience is as rare as the air is rarified. One family returning to “Frost” with great expectations has written, “We enjoyed each switchback up to the house — and then, the big moment — opening the front door to drink in the view!” And, the view through the western wall of windows is, indeed, spectacular in the extreme.
Spread before you is the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park. Snow-capped peaks compete at poking holes in the sky. The high ridge you see stretching across the horizon before you constitutes America’s western Continental Divide. “Frost” is so privately situated that you can almost believe that the vast domain spread before you is your own private National Park. Walk out onto the western deck (one of three at “Frost”) and a song is soon running around in your head: “I’m sitting on top of the world looking down on Creation…..”
The deck where you are standing has seating for everyone in your entourage, a table for dining, and a gas-grill at the ready. Towering trees caress the house. One protruding branch in your purview is a perfect perch for Colorado birds of every feather to pause and preen. Step across the St. Moritz Trail that conveyed you up to “Frost” and you are entering the 1,271 square miles of Teddy Roosevelt National Forest. The forest is home to deer, elk, bears, mountain lions, and scores of ground critters. You will soon be on speaking terms with many of them as they graze nonchalantly by to have their pictures taken!
The living room at “Frost” is crowned with a high wooden ceiling crafted of “beetle kill” pine. The beetles that ravished trees in parts of America’s Northwest have produced wood of extraordinary character and the ceiling here salvages and displays that hidden beauty. Recessed lighting dramatically enhances the ceiling’s character by night. Clerestory windows high overhead will welcome morning’s first light. Leather seating set amidst bright area rugs focuses on a wood-burning fireplace. TV (Blu-Ray), a music system, books, and games are all at hand.
Fine art prints reflect the love of the owners for the world out of doors — and their artistic good taste! And, speaking of “good taste,” the kitchen at “Frost,” in keeping with the high standards of all Windcliff rentals, is intended for use and is prepped accordingly. The name “Bosch” is readily in evidence. Snazzy southwestern tableware is stacked tall in the cupboards. The dining room table comfortably seats eight. Sit at the head of the table and the Tyndall Glacier nestled between Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain is directly in your field of view.
The spacious king master suite at “Frost” features its own balcony and an office.
Downstairs you will find two more queen bedrooms and a small living area. A west-facing deck harbors a hot tub with a spectacular view into the National Park by day and unto the universe at night.
