and of themselves in Key West. A colorful footprint of innocence and industry of the late 1800's is at once reflected in the unique style that was created by our seafaring predecessors who built these graceful wooden beauties. Without the benefit of architectural renderings or blueprints, or for that matter bridges to carry planed lumber from the mainland, our forefather craftsmen created a historic treasure for our island.
This historic home is one of the very first of the large such Classic Revival Homes to be built in the seaport district of Key West. This home, like most it is era, was built right up to the side-walk with large covered porches to watch the world go by. In a time when the harbor was bustling with ship builders and chandleries, fish markets and turtle canning, boat repair and cigar making, this home was new in the late 1800's. An historic map of 1899 shows the home standing in grandeur down the street from the then Bay View Hotel and Restaurant. The map suggests that this home belonged to then 'cigar king,' Aarturo Avalo. Mr. Avalo owned Cigar Factor No. 333 that was right next door to the estate. A gate in the fence between the estate and shop allowed for a quick commute.
Today there are only a few such historic estate homes that are available for rent as private, single-family residences. Most homes of this type have been made over into apartments or bed and breakfast accommodations. This home is a wonderful treasure that reminds us of a simpler time when our island was blessed with contagious Caribbean energy that drove the island to an industry of seafaring trades. A stay at this unique historic seaport estate offers a rare opportunity to intimately live in a part of the lost-in- time landscape of Key West architectural history.
One unique feature of this home that captivates the interest of painters and photographers alike is the beautiful "broken tile" porch. Bright colors and the mosaic arrangement of tiles adds a dreamy feel to the front porch. Other original features of the home include pinewood throughout the interior and exterior and 12 foot high ceilings.
This Key West Centurion home has been lovingly renovated with style and grace to embrace and enhance the period during which the home was originally built. The downstairs parlor and hallway have beautiful tiger wood hardwood floors. The main kitchen, dining room and down stairs bathrooms are finished with travertine marble tile. The main foyer provides a dramatic tropical entrance that leads you to the upstairs.
Furnishings throughout the entire home are both exquisite and upscale and include many features not usually found in a private vacation home including a huge dining table that will comfortably seat 10 adults. Long hallway walls are graced with beautiful art work to create a gallery like feel.
All the creature comforts are provided in this home including a/c, two fully equipped kitchen facilities, four full bathrooms, 3color cable TVs, VCR and DVD player, and swimming pool. Linens and towels are provided.
This is a two-story home. The first floor has a parlor style living room, large kitchen, dramatic formal dining room, two bedrooms, and two full bathrooms. Beds on the first floor include one queen bed (with private bath), and two twin beds in the second bedroom. The upstairs provides four bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a day room that joins with the second story porch, and a full kitchen. Beds on the second floor include 2 king beds, and 2 queen beds. The second floor also has a nice size deck off the back door entrance.
This property is offered as an exclusive vacation rental in Old Town Key West. The property will not tolerate smoking inside. While it is ideal for families and groups to unite, it is definitely not suitable for staging loud parties. Only well behaved children are welcome. This property is not ' child-proof.'
