Welcome to Big Bear Lake and the Alpenhorn Bed & Breakfast: Located high in the pristine San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, surrounded by National Forest, Big Bear Lake offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy virtually all summer and winter sports - downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoeing, hiking, back-country adventures, mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, fishing, and swimming - or just relax and enhance your romance.
At the Alpenhorn Bed & Breakfast Inn, guests will discover a place designed to meet needs of the most discerning guest. Located on nearly two landscaped acres of alpine forest midway between the Village and the Snow Summit Ski Area, the Inn is consistently the most highly rated lodging establishment in the County (Auto Club of Southern California Four Diamonds). Guestrooms have private bathrooms with fully tiled showers and separate whirlpool bathtubs for two, spa robes, fireplaces, phones, king or queen feather beds, televisions and VCRs, and private balconies.
To go with the TVs and VCRs, the Alpenhorn offers an extensive video library that includes all of the Academy Award winners for Best Picture from 1937 through 2005.
Breakfasts consist of fresh breads, fresh seasonal fruit, our homemade granola, European-style coffee, hot Oatmeal Banana Brulee, and a hot dish such as coddled eggs, apple pancakes, or cheese strata. Hot and cold beverages, along with freshly baked cookies, are available throughout the day. In the early evening, the Alpenhorn offers complementary hors d'oeuvres served with white and red wine. For later in the evening, the innkeeper sets out a variety of liqueurs, See's Chocolates, mixed nuts, and so on for guests to enjoy as they return from dinner.
Other amenities include full concierge and bell services and evening turndown service.
Other services available by appointment are in-suite massage therapy; private snowboard lessons (winter); private mountain bike lessons (summer); tours of Big Bear Valley, Holcomb Valley (summer), and the scenic south ridge (summer); and guided trail hikes to the most scenic and remote areas of the San Bernardino Mountains (summer).

The city of Big Bear Lake is an Alpine-like year-round recreation area with a full time population of about 6,000; however, on a good winter weekend, the population can swell to 100,000 or more. It is located at about 7,000 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. It is a two and one-half hour drive from the Los Angeles International Airport, and a comfortable three-hour drive from San Diego, Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs. The Big Bear Valley is known for its excellent day and night skiing, miles of hiking trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, gold-mining-boom-town history, fishing, boating, pristine air, and sparkling lake.
The lake is approximately eight miles long and one mile wide. This fresh water lake has a maximum depth of 72 feet with 23 miles of shoreline. For folks who enjoy fishing in the summer, there are lots of trout, bass, catfish, bluegill, and crappie. For non-fishermen, there is jet skiing, water skiing, swimming, sailing and lake cruising. And of course in the winter, skiing, snowboarding, sledding and other winter activities are excellent. The valley receives about 120 inches of snowfall each winter.
Big Bear is an ideal year-round resort with four seasons of outdoor activities. Summer temperatures range from in the upper 70's during the day to around 45 at night. Because of the nearly 300 days of clear skies and sunshine, one of the world's six solar observatories is located right on the lake. Winter daytime temperatures are in the 40's and in the 20's at night.
