Property Information
The Beau Fleuve Bed & Breakfast Inn is located in a grand Stick-style residence in Buffalo's Linwood Historic Preservation District. Built circa 1881 for Colonel Charles Lee Abell, a Buffalo banker, the Beau Fleuve represents a blend of the medieval half-timber architectural tradition and Queen Anne eclecticism.

The interior, with its unique oak staircase and nine colorful stained glass windows reflects the Aesthetic Movement-based on artistic and naturalistic themes-a companion of the Arts and Crafts movement. Its signature motif, the sunflower, appears in the house in both woodcarvings and art glass.

Colonel Abell, descendant of a Mayflower pilgrim, led the 74th New York Regiment in the Civil War and later served as president of the National Trust Company. The Abell family lived in the house until the late 1930s. During World War IIthe house was converted into two apartments on the second floor and doctors' offices on the first.

In 1986, restoration work began to return the house to single-family occupancy. In 1989, Ramona and Rik Whitaker became the new owners and continued the process. In March 1990, the Beau Fleuve Bed & Breakfast Inn, celebrating Buffalo's ethnic origins, was inaugurated. The Irish Room was the first to welcome guests. The German Room was opened in spring of 1991, the French Room in 1992, the Polish Room in 1993, and the Italian Room in 1995.

Exterior restoration and painting in rich authentic Aesthetic Movement colors were completed in the summer of 1994. Exterior lighting, landscaping, and additional improvements have followed (and continue) as the Whitakers complete their plans to ensure that this lovely historic residence at 242 Linwood Avenue continues to please the senses with its elegance and grace for many decades to come.

Buffalo has been called "The Twenty Minute City," because that's the maximum time that seems necessary to get anywhere nearby you want to be. The Beau Fleuve Bed & Breakfast Inn is in the heart of everything, and we're easy to get to.

From I-90 eastbound: Exit at I-190, Downtown Buffalo; proceed about four miles to Elm Street turnoff (at downtown ballpark); follow Elm St. to end; turn left, go past four lights, following overhead Delaware Avenue sign; turn right onto Franklin (first street past church). At slight jog in street, Franklin becomes Linwood; follow Linwood to third traffic light, Bryant Street; turn left, then right into first driveway on right.

From I-90 westbound: After toll booth, move into right hand lanes and exit at Route 33-Buffalo (exit 51W); follow 33 about 5 miles to Route 198, then follow 198 to Delaware Avenue exit; slow down to make a sharp right exit; at the stop sign, turn right, then immediately right again at the light (Delaware Avenue); proceed southbound on Delaware about 2.2 miles to Bryant; left on Bryant, then left into last driveway on left before the Linwood Avenue traffic light at next corner.

From Niagara Falls: Take the Robert Moses Parkway to I-190 and follow it southbound, across the Grand Island bridges, approximately 12 miles; exit at Route 198, the Scajacquada Expressway, and follow 198E to Delaware Avenue south; exit, proceed southbound on Delaware about two miles to Bryant; left on Bryant, then left into last driveway on left before the Linwood Avenue traffic light at next corner.

From Airport: Turn right onto Genesee Street and follow signs announcing Route 33 West to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Go approximately seven miles to Route 198; exit onto 198W and follow to Delaware Avenue exit; slow down to make a sharp right exit; at the stop sign, turn right, then immediately right again at the light (Delaware Avenue); proceed southbound on Delaware about 2.2 miles to Bryant; left on Bryant, then left into last driveway on left before the Linwood Avenue traffic light at next corner.

From Fort Erie and the Peace Bridge: Cross the Peace Bridge and move into the left side customs booths; after clearing customs, follow the signs to Porter Avenue. Turn left onto Porter and follow around past the Music Hall and church, where Porter becomes North Street at Richmond Avenue; continue east on North Street, past Elmwood and Delaware, to Linwood; turn left on Linwood and follow to third light (Bryant); turn left, then right into first driveway on right.

Off-street parking is available immediately behind the house; if full, park in the Linwood driveway at left side of rear of house.

They're playing our song...
Michael Chapdelaine was so inspired by his stay at our B&B, that he composed a beautiful, heartfelt song titled "Beau Fleuve." Available on CD.

Room rates include a full breakfast. All rooms have down comforters, ceiling fans and coffeemakers. The inn has central air conditioning.

A refreshment center contains the makings of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, a small guest refrigerator holds juices and soft drinks, and a hot and cold spring water dispenser is available for guests' use.

    The French Room:
Lovely and spacious, a king-size feather bed convertible to twin. Its Louis XVth chairs, decorative fireplace, champagne damask Schumacher wallcovering, and French-blue accents pay tribute to the area's earliest European settlers. Private bath, not en suite.

    The Irish Room:
Our largest, this newly refurbished room now wears William Morris's chrysanthemum wallcovering and features a queen-sized antique brass bed, Victorian sitting area, and a dressing alcove. The en suite bath has been paneled and wallpapered in a complementary Morris foliage print and sports a beautiful walk-in ceramic shower.

    The German Room:
Salmon-colored Schumacher chrysanthemum wallcovering provides a pleasant backdrop for a deliciously comfortable, high double bed, a decorative stein collection, antique Kaiser Wilhelm I print, books, and other artifacts that recall Buffalo's enterprising German immigrants. Newly installed private en suite bath features another beautiful Morris wallcovering, wainscoting, walk-in ceramic shower, and pedestal sink. $100/$115 (single/double occupancy).

    The Italian Room
Featuring a William Morris "vinery" wallcovering with mauve-rose grape clusters and Eastlake chairs covered in matching tapestry, this elegant room celebrates the Italian immigrants who came to Buffalo in the last two decades of the 19th century. The bed is a luxurious, queen-sized four-poster. Antique and contemporary prints of Venice provide Italian accents. Shared bath. $90/$100 (single/double occupancy).

    The Polish Room:
This room has recently been remodeled. Sorry, but we don't have a current photo yet. This is a photo of the way it was before our makeover.

    What's For Breakfast?
Follow the tantalizing aroma of freshly brewed gourmet coffee and just-baked muffins down the unique, wide oak staircase, past the gorgeous stained glass windows, into the welcoming dining room with its mulberry-colored walls hung with blue and white plates.

Seat yourself at the elegantly set table warmed by the glow of candlelight and fresh flowers. And get ready to start your day with a healthy and delicious repast and stimulating conversation with your hosts and other guests.

At your place you'll find chilled orange, grapefruit, orange/peach/mango, or cranraspberry juice and a composed fruit plate as simple as a grapefruit half garnished with fresh berries or as unusual as Ramona's Tropical Decadence: baked bananas, pineapple, raisins, nuts, and coconut melded together with other luscious secret ingredients. Top with a dollop of vanilla or lemon yogurt. Yum!

While waiting for your entrée and filling the room with the happy sounds of laughter, top your apple-cranberry, lemon-poppy seed, ginger-peach or mango-almond muffins with pure unsalted butter and French preserves, or eat them plain. They're delicious either way. Or choose the house specialty Pumpkin Nut bread, baked low fat or nonfat for today's health-conscious travelers.

But save some room for Veggie Frittata, Eggs Benedict, Fruited Belgian Waffles, or Raspberry - Almond Pancakes with (or without) breakfast sausage or turkey bacon. Have another cup of Tanzania Peaberry, Kenyan, or Mocha Java coffee or a proper pot of real or herbal tea. If time allows, relax and enjoy more conversation. But if you must make a meeting or business appointment, take your leave well fortified, and be sure that although tomorrow the menu will change, it will be just as good!

A two-hour "City of Light" trolley tour, inspired by Lauren Belfer’s historical novel set in 1901 Buffalo, is conducted Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. through August 29 by the Friends of the University of Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning. Reservations: (716) 829-3543. Tickets are $20.

    Music
Buffalo's world-class Philharmonic Orchestra performs classical music and pop favorites in Kleinhans Music Hall, an acoustically ideal setting designed by the famous Saarinen father-son architectural team.

    Art
The Albright-Knox Art Gallery houses major impressionistic and abstract works that have earned it a reputation as one of the best in the country. To celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Pan American Exposition, an exhibit, "Circa 1900: From the Genteel Tradition to the Jazz Age" runs through August 19.

The exhibit features paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glass and furniture from the 1880s to the 1920s. While the focus is on American art, there are some examples of French impressionists such as Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne. Featured is "Spirit of Niagara," the poster for the Pan American Exposition by Evelyn Rumsey Cary, and portraits by John Singer Sargent. Also on display is glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Roycroft furnishings, and the photography of Edward Steichen.

Later this year, the gallery presents "The Triumph of French Painting: Masterpieces from Ingres to Matisse," November 3 through January 6. The Burchfield-Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College exhibits the watercolors of Charles Burchfield and works by important regional artists. The Anderson Gallery and numerous smaller galleries provide more rich viewing opportunities.

    History
The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, in a Classical Revival building that was part of the 1901 Pan American Exposition, has objects, photographs, paintings and film commemorating the Exposition, as well as interactive technology and a 3-D multimedia tour of the Pan-Am, through January 13. The nearby wonderfully restored Wilcox Mansion, where Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office in 1901 after President McKinley was assassinated, also has special exhibits.

A newly-opened Pierce-Arrow Museum, with automobiles, bicycles and motorcycles, highlights the history of the luxury automobile, as well as other vehicles manufactured in Buffalo and Western New York during the early 20th century. Other easy-to-reach historic attractions in the city include an early 19th century lighthouse; the Naval & Military Park, home to World War II vessels and planes, and the greatest lineup of grain elevators in the world—a Buffalo invention.

    Theater
A dozen or so playhouses stage high-quality productions at affordable prices. On summer evenings in beautiful Delaware Park, also designed by Olmsted, you can enjoy Shakespearean plays performed al fresco. "Julius Caesar" is playing through mid-August. Numerous movie theaters nearby feature first- and second-run movies, as well as art films, and a variety of downtown pubs feature live music and entertainment.

    Beyond Buffalo
Access is easy to the fabulous Niagara Falls, just 25 minutes away. Not to be missed is a ride to the bottom of the Horseshoe Falls on the Maid of the Mist, or for the more adventuresome, a daring whitewater ride on the rapids aboard a Whirlpool Jet. Old Fort Erie on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and Old Fort Niagara, built by the French in 1750s in chateau style along Lake Ontario, remind visitors that the War of 1812 was waged in these environs. The historic Erie Canal locks in nearby Lockport still operate and canal boat cruises are available.

East Aurora, a half-hour away, reflects the influence of the Roycroft artisans. The Roycroft campus, founded in 1895 by Elbert Hubbard, who became on the of the leaders of the American Arts and Crafts movement, features the wonderfully-restored Roycroft Inn, a fine gift shop and Hubbard’s home, an attractive Craftsman-style bungalow. Nearby is the first home of Millard Fillmore, the country’s 13th president.

Two Great Lakes and the mighty Niagara River make the area a year-round recreational paradise. There's boating and fishing in our temperate and low-humidity summers, and winter sports are an easy 40-minute drive south. In autumn, the colors are splendid both in the city and in the surrounding countryside.

Numerous wineries near the Lake Erie shoreline south of Buffalo, as well as on the Canadian side of the Niagara River, provide visitor tours and wine tasting.

In spring and summer, the Bisons AAA baseball team competes in one of the nation's most attractive minor league ballparks. In fall and winter, our professional football and hockey teams, the Buffalo Bills and the Sabres, offer exciting action.

Add the Chautauqua Institution, 90 minutes south, for nine weeks of summer music, lectures, and recreation in a Victorian compound along Lake Chautauqua. Or nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake with its fine summer Shaw (and contemporaries) theatrical productions. Or a day's drive to Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, for autumn colors. Or Toronto, only two hours north.

    Come and Visit!
A small town in big city clothes, Buffalo is known as "The City of Good Neighbors." So, above all, you'll find folks here down-to-earth, friendly, and welcoming.
