Property Description

This Civil War Era home sits in Key West's most desirable Historic Seaport District, less than a block from the Gulf of Mexico. Did Abraham Lincoln sleep here? Probably not. But anyone staying today in this classic revival valued in the millions will find not only history but every creature comfort and contemporary convenience.
The first floor offers a spacious living room appointed in a soothing green-and-beige palette where you can sink into a fiery coral couch flanked by a classic glass-top coffee table and oriental-style rug. Wicker and wood occasional chairs complete the scene. Open all the windows and doors to invite the soft tropical ambience inside. Or sit in air-conditioned comfort to chat with family or friends while a classic ceiling fan swirls lazily above. Use the Cable TV/DVD player, which you'll also find in the bedrooms above, to view a movie or watch a favorite show. If you're thirsty or hungry, the spotless kitchen and dining table that seats six are just steps away and waiting to be used.

Maybe you're ready to lounge outside on the expansive front porch, back porch, or one of the two upstairs verandas. Out back, across the terracotta brick patio, you can refresh in the swimming pool ringed by foliage and shimmering under a cloudless Key West sky. Afterwards check out the pool cabana with bedroom, bath, and inviting open-air shower. When you're ready to call it a night, you can retire to one of the two airy, comfortable bedrooms upstairs in the main house, each with full bath, or enjoy total privacy in the stand-alone cabana.

You've heard the term location-location-location. The home you've rented is perfectly placed for experiencing the many charms of Key West. You could start by stepping just across Caroline Street to B.O.'s Fish Wagon for lunch or dinner. As one blogger put it, the place "looks like a hurricane just dumped a pile of flotsam on a street corner." In reality, B.O.'s is a favorite locals' hangout where you can order an award-winning fish sandwich as written up in The New York Times. Or, ringing the seaport just beyond B.O's, are a dozen or so eating establishments such as Raw Bar, Turtle Kraals, Schooner Wharf, and Conch Republic.
Since the coral island of Key West only spans fourteen short blocks of real estate from the Gulf to the Atlantic Ocean, plenty of other culinary delights-from five-star to street food vendors-are all incredibly close and accessible by foot, bike, scooter, car, pedicab, or trolley. Your choice. Many have Happy Hours from late afternoon to early evening when drinks and appetizers can be enjoyed for half price. And don't miss Mallory Square's sunset celebration where locals and visitors gather to witness and applaud as the sun sinks below the horizon. Once in a while you'll glimpse a brilliant green flash at the exact moment the sun disappears. Hang around for the party as artists and street performers entertain the crowd. Or join the throngs on Duval, browse in an art gallery, or visit the Hemingway House, Truman White House, or Key West Light House and Keeper's Quarters Museum.

On the other hand, maybe right now you want to move at a slower pace, on what's famously called "island time." To get started, pick up libations and appetizers at Faustos Food Palace, which has been in the same location on Fleming Street since 1936. Expect to shop among writers, artists, families, locals, and visitors. While at this historic grocery store, grab a free copy of Paradise, a publication that comes out every Thursday listing upcoming special events: the music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and special events.

Bring your purchases and reading material back to those comfy lounge chairs by your private heated pool. Snack, swim, sip, read. But don't forget to lather on a bit of sun screen first. If you begin to feel drowsy, let a relaxing siesta overtake you. Maybe when you wake, you'll be motivated to BBQ at your grille or cook something succulent in your fully equipped kitchen. Making the right choices in life are important and you'll know, as your time in paradise comes to a close, that renting the Kemp House has been one of those "rights." If a vacation means to escape, relax, lounge, take a break, get away, this has been the absolute right place to do it.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on our website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events include milezerokeywest.com and Paradise, which comes out every Thursday.

Great location and wonderful outdoor space. As this was our fourth year at our happy place we were happy to see a new refrigerator and the home still in awesome condition! We hope the beds get updated before next year's stay - especially the Cabana bed! Thanks for another great year!
The home was very nice and close to Duval without the noise.

The home was very nice and close to Duval without the noise. Everything was exactly as detailed in the communications we had. Good, quick places to eat at either end of the block. The pool wasn't heated (it can be if requested) and was quite cold even though daytime temperatures were 85-90. Had an issue figuring out where the trash cans were but managed anyway. Management even kept our suitcases for the 6 hour wait to go to the airport. Everyone was very nice.
We will definitely be back next year for vacation!

The staff at Historic Hideaways was very helpful and easy to work with. The house was amazing and clean and has everything you need The pool was private and in a tropical paradise setting. Location, location, location. 4 blocks off Duval St. and one block off the docks with so many restaurants , bars and excursions. We will definitely be back next year for vacation!

The home is amazing. The pool and courtyard were fantastic. It had everything we needed for our stay. The location was perfect for everything we wanted to do on the island. The only negative is parking. There are only like two non resident parking spots on the entire block that the house sits on. And I have two parking tickets to prove it. That is my fault though. I have already recommended this property to friends that visit Key West regularly.
We couldn’t have asked for better hospitality and service!

(rental agent) was the best property manager we have ever had the pleasure of working with. His communication was clear and every step of the rental process was easy. We couldn’t have asked for better hospitality and service! We loved the Kemp House! The location was great for walking around, but it still felt private. The house had all of the amenities we wanted/needed...

The location is the best if you want to fish or walk around the docks; it was only 2 blocks away! Duval St. and Mallory Square was also easy to walk to from the house. The house was very roomy for all six of us. We grilled fresh fish we caught and sat outside most of the time. All important items were provided such as sunscreen, towels, hairdryer, and iron (the humidity ironed clothes for free). There is no need to take any extra items in your luggage. I highly recommend Kemp House.

We loved Kemp House! The house is beautiful and the location fantastic--so close to everything we wanted to do. We have rented from Historic Hideaways several times and have always had wonderful experience. They were especially accommodating this time because our flights were rescheduled and they allowed us a late check out. Tim was great to work with us and we were/are SO grateful. We highly recommend Historic Hideaways!

Well maintained. Maybe a pruning of the pool area; however the flowers are terrific. A parking spot would add to this value property. Parked at a lot on southward/William for $85 per week. Will return to key west next year 2019. Hope to stay in a similar home.

An absolutely fantastic historic home with a wonderful outdoor living area. The covered area was perfect for middle of the day relaxation when we weren't in the pool. The bedrooms in the house were spacious, and while the "cabana" bedroom was a little smaller, it was still a great space. We love the Seaport district in Key West and the location could not have been better for our group. Simply walk across the street and we were there! BO's, Pepe's, Harpoon Harry's, Schooner Wharf, Turtle Kraals, Conch Farm, Half Shell all just a few steps away, and only three blocks off Duval. But, the house felt secluded and private with no noise other than a few roosters. Highly recommend this home. Make sure you check out the picture of the home at the back of the kitchen!

Air conditioner wasn't blowing cold air in the one room but contacted Historic Hideaways and they sent someone within a half hour to fix/replace it! It's a perfect little private resort...We will definitely be back!

This house was perfect for us! It's on a quiet street so there's no street noise but it's close enough to mallory square, shops and restaurants, a little beach with a bar (with amazing frozen drinks), and a short walk to Duval. Check-in was super easy. There were three adult couples staying here and there was plenty of space for all of us. The house has everything you could need, all you need to bring is your beach towel and toiletries. A/C worked great, the little cabana house was comfortable too, it's only shower is outdoor but that didn't bother us, it's hidden away from the main house and surrounded by the trees and flowers. The rooms in the house were clean and comfortable too. Big bathrooms in there. It was nice to have a washer/dryer and the bathroom on that main floor was handy. One of the best parts about the house was the private swimming pool! It felt absolutely amazing after getting home from biking to Smathers beach or taking a dip after walking Duval! Check-out was super easy, we just dropped the keys through the drop slot. And the rental company, historic hideaways, was really responsive to any questions. We'll definitely be staying here again!

We had a great week at Kemp house. Just far enough away from the noise and business of Key West revelry, and yet just a short walk or bike ride to everywhere. Bike rental right around the corner too! The pool and patio area was beautiful and clean. TIP we found the third bathroom in the main house on our last night. It is accessed on the back deck. It is over by the washer and dryer, actually outside of the house. Our third couple stayed in the pool house with the outdoor shower and loved it. TIP if your spouse can't handle your snoring, stay in the main house...one of our party slept in a lounge chair by the pool one night to escape the snoring. It sprinkled that night and the key to the pool house is not the same as the key to the back patio door. oops. The kitchen was perfect. I can't think of one thing that did not meet or exceed our expectations.

Plus there was coffee, a must! The house is located on a lovely, historic street in Old Town, so we rented bikes at Eaton Bikes, only one block away. So easy to park them on the side of house and keep them secure. Wi-fi was great, unless it's windy. If you are looking for a great place to stay in Key West you won't do better than "Kemp House." Tastefully decorated with all the amenities you can imagine. It is within walking distance of everything. Great restaurants only 10 minutes away. Kemp House has a pool, a full kitchen with everything you ned to create gourmet meals, it sleeps 6 comfortably, includes a library with info on Key West history, flora & fauna and is located at the foot of William Street in the historic "old Town" district. It also includes wifi and a wide screen TV although there is so much to do in Key West you'll probably only use it to tell your friends about "Kemp House." Stay here and you'll have a six star vacation in a five star world. My wife & I and our daughter & son-in-law could not have been more pleased with our accommodations.
