Property Description

Soak it all up. The history. The ideal location. The expansive front porch and private pool oasis in back. Because of its proximity to the Ernest Hemingway House Historic Landmark, this two-bedroom, two-bath residence is aptly named "Hemingway's Cottage." Its location in the very heart of Old Town Key West puts you right where any visitor would be delighted to be-close to everything that makes the island a world-class destination.

From Whitehead Street, the cottage presents a picture-perfect tropical fa├žade. The porch that runs the width of the house is framed in green foliage with a ceiling fan above and wicker furniture and area rugs below. Sit here to watch locals walk their dogs or friends saunter along in groups to some close-by destination like the Key West Light House or the Hemingway estate. Once inside the door, you can see straight through to the pool and deck. Windows all around provide abundant natural light. The place was designed with contemporary function and easy living in mind.

The living room is to the left and features two deep-seat couches centered around a coffee table. This makes a perfect conversation spot or delightful place to watch a movie or sporting event on the large flatscreen TV on the opposite wall. Of course there's central AC, high-speed internet, cable TV, and stereo at your fingertips. A ceiling fan above circulates air and adds a touch of beauty and style to the scene. In fact ceiling fans are a continuing motif throughout the residence.

The queen bedroom is to the right. The headboard of whitewashed barn wood planks compliments the white and nautical blue of the comforter. The painting on the wall, the accent pillow, the chest of drawers, a starfish plaque all splash the room with touches of soothing blue. White sheers drape the floor to ceiling windows that look out onto the front porch. On the opposite wall is the door to the generous walk-in closet and the door to the full bath. This bath, with its playful hand-painted sink and circular shell mirror, doubles as the guest bath with a second entry way from the living area.

The dining area is delineated by a round glass table and four woven chairs. Or for more casual seating there are two bar stools right behind at the kitchen bar. Two crystal pendant lights make this a delightful and ideal place to drink a morning coffee or to read the newspaper. The kitchen has everything for any cook whether intending elaborate meals or simple fare. An expanse of stone counters provides plenty of working space with copious cupboards above and below. A five-burner glass cook-top stove makes for easy cooking and easy cleanup. On the opposite wall is the laundry closet with washer and dryer and space for other cleaning paraphernalia. From the kitchen, glass doors open to the deck and pool area.

Behind the kitchen is the master bedroom with a king bed and ensuite full bath. The closet space is generous and the chest of drawers provides plenty of space for folded clothing items. Another set of glass doors open this bedroom to the deck and pool.

Of course the favorite spot on the whole property for most is the easy-breezy pool and deck oasis. As you step through the glass doors of the kitchen or of the master bedroom, the scene is picture perfect: wood plank decking surrounding a square, heated pool of clear blue water sparkling in the sun and sometimes reflecting puffy white clouds that pass over now and then. Pots of plants dot the perimeter while fencing guarantees privacy. Four chaise loungers poolside stand ready to support the kind of mental, physical, and spiritual rejuvenation people go on vacation to achieve. Swim, float, or just dip your toes in. Then stretch out for a nap in the sun or in the shade provided by the porch overhang. A gas grill stands ready to cook lunch or dinner which can then be served at the open-air table and chairs or back inside in the dining table.

One acclimated to the outstanding offerings of the delightful living space, it's time to go exploring. Maybe start within your own block. Perhaps a meal at Moondog just a few doors down. Or walk down Petronia to Blue Heaven, or Bad Boy Burrito, or Santiago's Bodega for a great meal. At some point a tour of Hemingway's estate to visit the famous six-toe cats is in order. Or climb to the top of the Key West Lighthouse for a spectacular view of the island.

Walk a block up to Duval. A right turn will point you toward the shores of the Atlantic and a left turn toward the Gulf of Mexico. In between are all the things that make the Conch Republic so famous: beaches, tours, museums, shopping, over two hundred restaurants, bars, and the Key West Aquarium where you can pet a shark if you dare. Or maybe you'd prefer to have your picture taken at the Southernmost Point buoy, the most photographed spot on the island. Everything is within walking or biking distance, even the Truman Waterfront Park and the pre-Civil War era Fort and the Beach at Fort Zachery Taylor. Or catch a ride on the Duval Loop, a free bus.

If the arts interest you, you've come to the right town for music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more. Don't miss the opportunities for all kinds of water sports along the Historic Seaport boardwalk. Most tourists say you haven't "done" Key West unless you've been to the daily sunset celebration at Mallory Square where tourists and locals alike gather to watch and applaud as the sun sinks into the Gulf of Mexico. Then stick around for the party on the dock that follows featuring local musicians, street performers, art vendors, jewelry vendors, and food and drink carts.

If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook from Books & Books on Eaton Street or a stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on Greene Street will help make sure you don't miss anything.
