Here, Gulf shoreline, Sarasota Bay, mangrove habitat, tidal waterways and coastal wildlife come together in one of the most interesting natural areas near Lido Beach and St. Armands Circle.
The park is especially worth exploring if you enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, birdwatching, walking or simply finding a quieter place along the water. You can spend part of your day along the shoreline and then launch a kayak into protected waterways to explore mangroves and Brushy Bayou.
One important detail to understand before you arrive is that Ted Sperling Park includes two separate areas: Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach and Ted Sperling Nature Park. They are close to one another but provide different experiences.

The nature park is located at 190 Taft Drive on Lido Key and serves as the primary canoe and kayak access point for this part of the island. Amenities include a canoe and kayak launch, kayak wash station, fishing, birdwatching, picnicking, a picnic shelter, restrooms and wildlife viewing.
This is where you can leave the open beach environment behind and begin exploring the calmer bay-side waterways surrounding southern Lido Key.
One of the highlights of visiting Ted Sperling Nature Park is the opportunity to paddle the South Lido Mangrove Tunnels.
Launch from the nature park and you can access Sarasota Bay, Brushy Bayou and a network of waterways that lead through the mangrove environment. Instead of looking at the mangroves from shore, kayaking or canoeing allows you to move directly through narrow passages surrounded by vegetation.
The experience can change as you move between more open water and protected mangrove areas. In some sections, branches create a natural canopy above the water, while other areas open into wider views of the bay.
You do not necessarily need to bring your own equipment. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at South Lido Nature Park, and you can explore independently or join a scheduled guided tour.
Brushy Bayou is another important part of the paddling experience around Ted Sperling Nature Park. The protected waterway provides access toward the mangrove tunnels and offers a very different environment from the Gulf-facing beaches on the opposite side of Lido Key.
Paddling through this area gives you time to slow down and observe the shoreline more closely. Watch the mangrove roots along the water, look into the shallows and listen for birds in the surrounding vegetation.
If you are new to kayaking or unfamiliar with tidal coastal waterways, a guided trip can be particularly useful. Local guides can help with navigation while also explaining more about the mangrove ecosystem and wildlife you may encounter.
Ted Sperling Park is also an excellent place to keep your eyes open for Florida wildlife.

Conditions and fishing opportunities vary depending on tides, season and location. If you plan to fish, check current Florida saltwater fishing license requirements before your visit and always dispose of fishing line properly. Monofilament and discarded tackle can be particularly dangerous to birds and marine wildlife.
You do not need a kayak to appreciate South Lido.
The beach park includes an unpaved trail that lets you explore part of the coastal landscape on foot. A walk through the park provides a closer look at vegetation, shoreline habitat and the transition between the Gulf and bay environments surrounding the southern portion of the island.
Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore beyond the beach, especially after rain when natural trails may be wet or muddy.
Ted Sperling Park can also work well for families who want more than a few hours sitting on the sand. The South Lido Beach area includes picnicking, a playground and restrooms, while the nature park offers picnicking and a picnic shelter.
That makes it possible to build an entire morning or afternoon around the park. Explore the beach, take a walk, have lunch and then spend time kayaking or watching wildlife.
Bring water, sunscreen and insect protection, particularly if you plan to spend time around the mangroves or visit during warmer months.
One of the advantages of visiting Ted Sperling Park is how easily it fits into a larger day exploring Lido Key.
You can start the morning kayaking through the South Lido mangrove tunnels, spend part of the afternoon relaxing along Lido Beach and then head to St. Armands Circle for shopping, drinks or dinner.
St. Armands Circle provides a completely different experience from the natural environment at South Lido. Boutiques, galleries, specialty shops, cafés, ice cream, seafood and restaurants surround the landscaped Circle, making it a natural place to finish a day outdoors.
Ted Sperling Park stands out because you can experience several sides of coastal Sarasota within a relatively small area.
You have Gulf beaches and open water on one side of Lido Key and Sarasota Bay, Brushy Bayou and mangrove habitat on the other. In between are opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, walking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
If you only visit the main beach, you see one part of Lido Key. Exploring Ted Sperling Park and its mangrove waterways gives you a much better understanding of the natural environment surrounding the island.
