Watch as, right before your eyes, Siesta Beach turns into an outdoor art gallery in the sand! Artists spend three days creating and perfecting their sculptures before they are judged for first place leaving the last day for visitors to admire all the fantastic sand sculpture creations. Siesta Key does a fine job of giving it's visitors an event to remember and return to yearly but also an event that supports local artists and the community of Siesta Key.
The Siesta Key Crystal Classic Sand Sculpting Festival brings some of the world's most talented sand artists to Siesta Beach for four days of competition, creativity, and remarkable temporary art. Set against the bright white quartz shoreline of Siesta Key, Florida, the event turns one of the Gulf Coast's most famous beaches into an open air gallery unlike any other.
Twenty four professional sculptors compete by transforming enormous quantities of Siesta Key's fine quartz sand into detailed figures, dramatic scenes, architectural forms, and imaginative designs. Visitors can watch the process unfold throughout the weekend and see how each sculpture evolves from a simple mound of sand into a finished work of art.
Part of what makes the Crystal Classic so interesting is the opportunity to see the competition in progress. Sculptors work under timed conditions, typically spending eight hours per day Thursday through Saturday before completing their final four hours on Sunday.
Because the sculptures are created in real time, visitors who attend on different days can experience completely different stages of the competition. Early in the event, artists are shaping the basic forms. By the final day, the beach is filled with highly detailed finished sculptures ready for judging.
Siesta Beach provides a memorable setting for the festival because of its unusually fine, bright white quartz sand. The sand's texture and color give the sculptures a distinctive appearance, with shadows and fine details standing out dramatically against the pale surface.
The Crystal Classic has become one of the most creative ways to experience the natural feature that helped make Siesta Key famous. Instead of simply walking across the sand, visitors get to see it used as the foundation for large scale works of art.
The competition builds toward the Awards Ceremony on Sunday at 3 PM, when the top sculptures and artists are recognized. By that point, visitors can walk among the completed works and appreciate the skill, planning, and precision required to create them using only sand and water.
Festival guests also have an opportunity to participate by voting for the People's Choice Award. Visitors receive a voting token and can place it with the sculpture they like best.
People's Choice voting remains open until Monday at 2:30 PM, allowing guests additional time to explore the finished sculptures and support their favorite artist.
The Siesta Key Crystal Classic combines art, competition, and one of Florida's most recognizable beaches into a single annual event. It is especially appealing for families, photographers, art lovers, and travelers looking for something different to experience during a Siesta Key vacation.
