Property Description

Whether you want to connect or reconnect with the island paradise of Key West, this residence, aptly named The Sanctuary, is a dream destination. Its L-shaped architectural design centers around a temperature-controlled pool, built-in hydro massage spa, graceful waterfall, and outdoor rain shower. Five doors of this five-bedroom, five-bath residence open onto the totally private pool courtyard ringed in tropical foliage. From the front door you can see right through to what would have to be called a masterpiece of an outdoor oasis. As you look, you'll find it hard to define the line where the sparkling pool water melds with blue sky. All this plus the residence has four designated parking places and is located just blocks from Atlantic beaches, excellent restaurants, and the world-famous Duval Street.

(During shoulder and off season this home may be rented as a Three (3) bedroom / 3 bath only. (The Guest House will be locked out.) Rates for use as a three bedroom are comparable to our Hemingway's Library 3 bedroom property. Please see that page for rates or contact our office for details.)

From the street, The Sanctuary looks a lot like a traditional Conch cottage. Out front a walkway is flanked by deep-green foliage and leads to a covered porch with two inviting Adirondack-style chairs. But once you open the front door, the story changes dramatically. You suddenly get a sense of the scope of the residence. It's spacious. It's artfully decorated. It's comfortable. It's a place to be meditative and introspective. Just as easily, it's a place to host pool parties, luncheons, dinners. The five bedrooms, five baths, six TVs, four designated parking spaces means you can bring your whole family or ten closest friends on vacation with you.

The living room offers comfortable seating with a couch and overstuffed chairs grouped for conversation or for watching movies on the wall-mounted flat screen. Of course there's also cable, high-speed internet, stereo, printer/scanner, central AC, ceiling fans galore, and a security system. A small drafting desk with stool, antique bench coffee table, and unique area rug add interest and functionality. Wall art and throw pillows provide subtle touches of color.

But the bold decorative chord is struck with the melon accent wall that is half open to the white kitchen beyond. Part of the openness forms a counter with four bar stools. Above this counter are hanging pendant lamps in white with touches of the same melon. You can sit here for a morning latte while looking out through a glass door to the sunny deck. Or fling the doors wide open to let in the morning air. The delightful galley kitchen is well designed to include the amenities a cook could want including all appliances, a double sink, and copious cabinets above and below.

The room to the left also boasts many cabinets, the bottom half with solid doors which hide the washer/dryer. The glass doors of the upper cabinets reveal glassware and bar accoutrements, including a 'Margaritaville' which blends the ultimate slushy drink. A tall table with four stools occupies the middle of the room. Above hangs a modern artisan lighting fixture. Melon placemats continue the signature color from the living room. Sitting here you can see out through double glass doors to the portion of the courtyard under a white lattice-work pergola. Here is the alfresco eating area with a table and chairs for six. A gas grill is conveniently nearby. The view is of the rectangular pool accompanied by the soothing sound of the waterfall.

The next room offers a wide king bed with cloud-white comforter, en suite full bath, plenty of space for folded and for hanging wardrobe items, ceiling fan, and a flatscreen TV. Bedside tables and lamps complete the picture except for the half glass wall that opens to the deck and pool oasis.

On the other side of the living room are two more bedrooms with a full bath conveniently located between them. The first bedroom has twin beds that can be easily reconfigured into a king if that's more convenient. This room provides a five-drawer bureau and walk-in closet. Two windows bring in ambient light and offer outside views. The second bedroom is the master suite. This spacious room has three parts. In the first there's a king bed, seating area, five-drawer dresser, and bedside tables with lamps. Then comes the walk-through closet with plenty of space for hanging and folded clothes. On the other side of that is a full bath with double sinks and a doorway opening onto the pool deck.

The next door opening from the pool deck leads to the attached guest house with two queen bedrooms, exercise room, kitchen, two full baths and an additional washer/dryer.

After you've unpacked your bags but before you get too comfortable at The Sanctuary, check out your Old Town neighborhood. It's only blocks to Higgs Beach, a delightful stretch of soft sand and the White Street fishing pier jutting out into the wide Atlantic Ocean. The beach and restrooms are clean, the volleyball nets are set right in the sand, and the parking is free in case you've elected to drive. Also right on the sand is Salute! where you can have an excellent lunch or dinner among writers, artists, families, locals, and visitors.

Or walk a bit further down to the Sun-Sun Beach Bar & Grill at Casa Marina. Nearby and still overlooking the Atlantic is Louie's Back Yard, a Caribbean-American restaurant known for fine dining. Or just have a drink under umbrellas at their Afterdeck bar. From Louie's you're only a few blocks from Duval where you'll find what Key West is famous and infamous for: tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. Be sure to check your cell for sunset times so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square where locals and visitors alike gather to witness the sun sinking into the horizon.
